2 STEP into your FUTURE DEPARTMENT OFBIOLOGY Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek Ulica cara Hadrijana 8/a
3 Introduction The Department of Biology was established in Apart from a three-year undergraduate study programme in Biology and twoyear graduate study programmes (Biology and Chemistry Education; Biology: Scientific Programme; Nature and Environmental Protection), the Department of Biology offers postgraduate specialist studies (Nature and Environmental Protection), as well as two doctoral studies: Nature and Environmental Protection in collaboration with the Ruđer Bošković Institute and Molecular Biosciences in collaboration with the University of Dubrovnik and the Ruđer Bošković Institute. Students are at the Department organized in the student association named ZOA. At the Department of Biology, research studies have focuses on two main areas: the identification of biodiversity and the investigation of the effects of different abiotic and biotic factors on the ecosystem. The main research themes at the Department are: Water protection, entomofauna, aquatic invertebrates and microbial fauna of Kopački rit - a theme that deals with the hydrological and ecological interactions of the river and its floodplain as well as with the biodiversity of insects, aquatic invertebrates and microbial fauna of Kopački rit; Genetic markers and the role of attractants as regulators of hematophagous diptera number - a theme that deals with the effectiveness of attractants and different types of traps in the sampling of flies; Influence of different abiotic and biotic stress factors on algae, plants and animals - a theme that deals with effects of different environmental stress factors on algae, plant and animal physiology; Monitoring and research of mosquitoes a theme that deals with developing of mosquito control strategy what is extremely important issue for the local community and the whole region; Plant biodiversity a theme that deals with ecology of cyanobacteria and algae in floodplains and freshwaters in general as well as vascular plant diversity and ecology. Through the years the Department has conducted numerous research projects founded by Ministry of science and education and a large number of professional projects. Current research project at the Department founded by Croatian science foundation is entitled Diverse Effects of Environmentally Relevant Metal-based Nanoparticle and Pesticide Mixtures on Soil Fauna: A Novel Issue for Risk Assessment. Every year Department of Biology organises manifestation that promotes biology as a science called Biolog-i-ja. This manifestation is originally intended for secondary and primary school students as well as the whole community. 03
4 As future scientists, teachers you will devote your professional life to research and creation, and the results of your work will be the foundation of our country s future and future.
