Particle fluxes along the western Svalbard margin: one-year mooring deployment L. Langone I. Conese, F. Giglio, S. Miserocchi, S. Aliani (CNR-ISMAR) Preliminary results from experiments: a) Offshore Storfjorden b) Inner Kongsfjorden

Storfjorden is a sill-fjord that produces significant volumes of dense, brine-enriched shelf water through ice formation. The dense water produced in the fjord overflows the sill and can reach deep into the Fram Strait. Objectives To monitor the near-bottom current and physical sediment dynamics along the presumable pathway of cascading waters, including C export to the deep Identify the impact on deep-sea biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. In 00-0, deployed moorings (A, B, C, D)

Mooring design

TMF peaks from Jan-May 0 TMF up to g m - d - at 000m in March After, TMF decreases to values slightly higher than previous year At 000m depth, increase not recorded Lateral advection Total Mass Fluxes C (000 m) D (00 m) B (top 000 m) B (bottom 00 m) A (000 m)

Major constituent vs. Fluxes Origin of particles: no by PP resuspended from seabed/laterally advected

Physical time-series When TSM peaks, warmer and more saline waters at high speed (up to 0 cm/s) directed toward NW NSDW BSW during cascading entrains and mixes relatively warm AW, while is still driven by its salinity excess A (000 m) B (bottom 00 m) Fer & Adlandsvik, 00NSDW

Deployment of the Mooring Dirigibile Italia (MDI) in the Kongsfjorden L. Langone I. Conese, F. Giglio, S. Miserocchi, S. Aliani (CNR-ISMAR) AIMS: Monitoring variations of thermohaline characteristics Temporal variability of particle fluxes and compositions Results from the first year of deployment (Sept. 00-Sept. 0).

New mooring Surface circulation in the fjord. The inner part, after retreat of major glaciers. MDI mooring CTD survey to choose the mooring location

Seabed studies in the Kongsfjorden Benthos Chirp III - khz subsub-bottom profiler In 00, acquired >0 nm of highhigh-resolution seismic profiles A Acoustically parallel, well-laminated reflectors Probably Holocene, medium-fine grained glaciomarine sediments Acoustically transparent chaotic reflectors. Downslope mass movement on steep basin flanks B In 0, collected gravity cores. A B Ongoing sediment analyses for studying: nature, transport and fate of terrestrial organic matter by increasing runoff and glacier retreats; lateral advection of marine organic matter, matter, nutrients and pollutants by intrusion of oceanic water. water. In future, swath bathymetry and high-resolution seabed morphology in the shallow parts of Kongsfjorden and Krossfjorden (< 00 m deep)
