The Gorgon Project in Western Australia An overview from publically available sources Presenter: Rick Causebrook CO 2 Storage Capacity Estimation rd August 2013, Bangkok
2 The Gorgon Project Acknowledgements This presentation was sourced from material made publically available by the Gorgon Joint Venture. Principle sources : The Gorgon Project Web-site The Gorgon Environmental Approvals Site: talapprovals.aspx Gorgon Presentation to the CSLF Technical Committee Meeting, Pau March With acknowledgements to Chevron Australia
3 The Gorgon Project Project by Joint venture Chevron (47.333%) Shell (25%) ExxonMobil (25%) Osaka Gas (1.25%) Tokyo Gas (1%) Chubu Electric Power (0.417%) u/index.html
4 Barrow Island a class A nature reserve Nature and Industry co-existing, Barrow island also is the site of Australia s largest onshore oilfield which has been producing for 40 years. The Gorgon Project occupies only 1.3% of the uncleared landmass of the island.
5 The Gorgon Project $43 billion LNG project Single biggest project in Australia World s biggest CCS program Recognised by Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum Only new CCS project launched in 2010 which satisfied all 7 criteria agreed by the G8 at L'Aquila in 2009
6 The Gorgon Project: Gas Fields Greater Gorgon Fields lie km offshore and contain about 40 trillion cubic feet of gas Average 14% CO 2 in gas fields Processing Facility onshore Barrow Island 3x5Mtpa trains.
7 The Gorgon Project: CCS Gas piped and separated on Barrow Island CO 2 removed for sales gas CO 2 compression attached to gas facility Up to 3.4Mtpa of CO 2 will be captured, piped and stored in deep formations below Barrow Island
8 Injection 8-9 injection wells The Gorgon Project: CCS ~4 pressure management wells Monitoring repeat seismic data observation wells near surface soil gas monitoring Plume after 1000 yrs Barrow Island outline
CRETACEOUS JURASSIC BARROW GROUP DINGO CLAYSONE MUDERONG SHALE 9 The Gorgon Project: Regional Stratigraphy Barrow Island Reservoir Pressure Depleted Offshore Reservoir Dupuy Formation CO2 Storage
10 The Gorgon Project: Geology Depth: 2300 m Reservoir Dupuy Formation Massive sands Turbidite fan deposit Seal Barrow Group
The Gorgon Project: Geology 11 SANDSTONE (Dupuy Formation Upper Massive Sand) very few internal barriers. This will enable the CO2 to migrate relatively freely through the formation. Cores of the Dupuy Formation and Basal Barrow Group Shale BIOTURBATED SILTSTONE (Upper Dupuy Formation) Low permeability bioturbated siltstone, finely bedded siltstone. The siltstone is slightly permeable to CO2 and will act as a baffle to migration. SHALE (Basal Barrow Group Shale) The basal Barrow Group shale is a marine shale and represents an effective barrier to vertical migration of CO2. Chapter 13 Gorgon
12 The Gorgon Project: Simulation Predicted migration of CO 2 plume during the operational phase
The Gorgon Project: Simulation CO 2 plume (in beige) after 40-years Incorporates: migration baffles barriers seals Horiontal scale exaggerated
14 The Gorgon Project: Simulation Reservoir simulation based on the preferred injection scenario showing the extent of the CO 2 plume over 1000 years Base of Barrow Group Shale
15 The Gorgon Project: Monitoring CO2 Injection & Pressure Management wells Surveillance wells 4D Surface Seismic Soil Gas Pressure sensors
Long term monitoring of the Subsurface plume. 16 The CO2 injection project at Barrow Island is expected to continue for at least 30 years, after which the development and movement of the underground plume will be monitored for at least 15 years. After this time, when it is established that the plume is stable and contained, site closure will be approved. Some time after this long term liability will be assumed by State and Federal Governments
17 Project - Startup All necessary permits and approvals were obtained by early Financial Investment Decision (FID) taken in September 2014 Construction of the facilities started in November 2009 with a ground breaking ceremony
18 Current status Construction is well advanced with the first Gorgon LNG Train Modules in place. The CO2 injection wells are due to be spudded mid First LNG cargo expected to be loaded first quarter 2015 Injection operations expected to commence
