Miscellaneous Release Data 226 GIS Compilation: Bedrock Geology of Prosser Township Map and digital files for MRD 226 were prepared by B.R. Berger and S.J. McIlraith Outline - Introduction - Contents - Data Layers and Attributes - Using Data with ArcGIS 9.1/9.2 and Using Data with Earlier Versions of ESRI Introduction This digital compilation combines data from the published hardcopy Preliminary Map, P.3593, released April Additional data not on the paper release for example, tables containing geochemistry and petrography; photographs and enhanced attribute data can be found in this compilation. 1 The Targeted Geoscience Initiative (TGI) provides integrated geoscience knowledge pertaining to areas of high base metal potential, with the intent of stimulating private-sector resource exploration. TGI is a program of the Earth Sciences Sector, Natural Resources Canada, delivered in collaboration with provincial geological surveys with participation by industry and universities. 2
This digital GIS compilation was constructed using ArcGIS 9.1/9.2 software and data is housed in an ESRI geodatabase. The geodatabase was constructed in version 9.1, so can be used in either 9.1 or 9.2. Users who are not comfortable with geodatabases, have an older version of ArcGIS or ArcView, or are using different GIS software can use the shapefile versions of the data. Contents The geographic coordinate system used in this compilation is UTM zone 17, NAD 83. The mapping scale is 1: Data can be viewed by opening the ESRI map document (.mxd file extension). Five map documents have been created for use in different ArcGIS software versions and different file formats. The map documents include linkages between the rare earth element (ree) geochemistry points and the ree graphs. The graphs can alternatively be viewed directly with an image viewer. Digital copies of fieldwork photos are also provided. Some data included in the geodatabase and as shapefiles are also included as a series of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Spreadsheets are included for geochemistry, drill hole data, petrography and metamorphic sampling. Data Layers and Attributes The contents of MRD 226 are organised into folders based on file formats. Folders exist for geodatabase and shapefile data, text files, raster images and spreadsheets. The readme file and the metadata file are located in the root directory. Data can be copied to a computer, but it is very important to retain the folder names and file structure because the map documents and the hyperlinks are dependent on the current file structure. The entire project folder can reside anywhere on the computer. Use the hyperlink tool to enable hyperlinks. Hyperlinks to rare earth element graphs are established for the geochemical layer. Description of the document (mxd) files: 1. PROSSERTP92.mxd requires ArcGIS 9.2 and references to data housed in the prossertp.gdb geodatabase 2. PROSSERTP91.mxd requires ArcGIS 9.1 and references to data housed in the prossertp.gdb geodatabase 3. PROSSERTPshapefile92.mxd requires ArcGIS 9.2 and references to data housed in shapefiles 4. PROSSERTPshapefile91.mxd requires ArcGIS 9.1 and references to data housed in shapefiles 3
5. PROSSERTPshapefile83.mxd requires ArcGIS 8.3 and references to data housed in shapefiles Description of the folders: a) fonts and style file This folder contains 29 true type fonts which house all the Precambrian bedrock point structural symbols, and an ESRI style file which manages these symbols for use in ArcGIS. b) geodatabase The geodatabase file in this folder is a relatively new file format by ESRI. It is a single file that contains all spatial and attribute data for the compilation map. Within the geodatabase are folders (feature data sets) that contain the spatial/attribute data (feature classes). Feature classes are very similar to shapefiles. The geodatabase also contains tables for attribute data. Data in feature classes appear on the map face while tabular data are provided for reference and do not appear on the map face. c) legend file The legend for the original hardcopy Preliminary Map P.3593 is included as a.pdf file. d) MRDphotos contains.jpeg files of digital photographs from selected outcrops in Powell Township files are labelled according to station numbers on the digital map. e) ree contains.jpeg files of rare earth element (REE) and extended element geochemical plots for samples collected for geochemistry and are labelled according to the sample numbers in the Excel table. f) shapefiles Shapefiles were created by exporting all feature classes in the geodatabase. Tabular data in the geodatabase were not converted to shapefiles, but versions of the tables do exist in the spreadsheet folder. The shapefiles are provided for users who do not have the most recent version of ArcGIS and cannot use the geodatabase. Shapefiles can also be imported into other GIS software such as MapInfo. g) spreadsheets Spreadsheets are included (Microsoft Excel.xls file format) for drill hole data, geochemistry, petrography and metamorphic data. Data found in the spreadsheets are identical to the tables and compiled data feature classes in the geodatabase. DRILLHOLEDATA drillhole_collars.xls contains drill collar locations and drill hole labels. Column headers are compliant with Geosoft Target software. drillhole_detailed_survey.xls contains a list of subsurface azimuth and dip values for drill holes. Column headers are compliant with Geosoft Target. drillhole_lithology.xls contains geological data for each drill hole. Column headers are compliant with Geosoft Target software. The column code is used to assign colours 4
to the geological units. The label column corresponds to the legend values on the map face. drillhole_samples.xls contains general data for the samples taken from drill holes. drillhole_samples_lithology.xls contains a list of drill core samples, corresponding rock codes and legend units. rockcodes.xls contains rock codes, legend and assigned colours used in Geosoft Target software. GEOCHEMISTRY geochem.xls contains geochemistry values for samples collected by B.R. Berger and submitted to the Ontario Geoscience Laboratories. ND means not detected, NM means not measured. PETROGRAPHY petrography1995.xls contains thin section descriptions from samples collected by B.R. Berger during the 1995 field mapping season. Thin sections were examined and mineral proportions were visually estimated within a range that corresponds to the legend below: 1 trace to less than 1% 2 1% to 9% 3 10% to 24% 4 25% to 50% 5 greater than 50% petrography2006.xls contains thin section descriptions from samples collected by B.R. Berger during the 2006 field season. Thin sections were examined and mineral proportions were visually estimated within a range that corresponds to the same legend as used for petrography1995. METAMORPHIC metamorphic.xls contains a subset of data from OFR 6101, prepared by P.H. Thompson. Includes metamorphic data for select samples within Prosser Township. 7 Using Data with ArcGIS 9.1 and 8.3: The map documents provide a thematic representation of all associated data. Geology polygons are, for example, coloured according to lithology, and structural features are symbolised following OGS standards. Users with ArcGIS 9.1 or 9.2 have access to two map documents (.mxd) which reference to data in either geodatabase (PROSSER.mxd) or shapefile format (PROSSERshapefileversion.mxd). Users with ArcGIS 8.3 have access to one map document (.mxd) which references to data in shapefile format (PROSSERshapefileversion83.mxd). Correct symbolisation of point features requires that a series of true type fonts and the ESRI style file be installed on the working computer. install fonts - on the computer, navigate to start\control panel\fonts - select file\install new fonts - select all fonts in the OGS fonts folder on the CD and install copy over the style file - copy the style file ogstructural.style from the fonts and style file folder on the CD to C:\program files\arcgis\styles folder on the computer Using Data with Older ESRI Software: Users with an older version of ArcGIS 8.x or ArcView 3.x can work with the shapefile data in MRD 226, but map documents have not been constructed. This means that the shapefiles will not be automatically symbolised as they are when using a map document. Users will have to manually symbolise all data. ArcGIS 8.x users can manually symbolise point structures with the standard OGS symbols via the fonts and style file provided on the CD. The lithology polygons (lithologypolygons shapefile) can also be manually coloured by following the colour chart listed below. install fonts - on the computer, navigate to start\control panel\fonts - select file\install new fonts - select all fonts in the OGS fonts folder on the CD and install copy over the style file - copy the style file ogstructural.style from the fonts and style file folder on the CD to C:\program files\arcgis\styles folder on the computer match to symbols in the style - open ArcMap and add the point structure shapefile (observed data\structures) - right click the structures shapefile in the table of contents and open up the file properties - navigate to the symbology tab - under show, select categories\match to symbols in a style 7
- select the value field FEATURE - select the style to match to (browse, select ogstructural.style) - hit the match symbols box - select all the symbols and change the size to 18 - select the advanced button/rotation/select geographic and azimuth for the rotation field - dip values can be displayed as labels - to display the dip values, right click the structures shapefile, select properties/labels tab - select dip in the label field box, and choose 6 for the font size - check on the label features in this layer box at the top left displaying geology polygons (lithologypolygon): - right click lithologypolygon/properties/symbology - select show/categories/unique values - select lithology as the value field and hit add all values - change the colour boxes for each lithology with the r/g/b values in the table below, double click a colour box/fill colour/more colours and enter in the r/g/b values ROCK CODE ROCK DESCRIPTOR RED GREEN BLUE 1 ultramafic metavolcanic rocks mafic metavolcanic rocks intermediate metavolcanic rocks felsic metavolcanic rocks clastic and chemical metasedimentary rocks metamorphosed ultramafic intrusive rocks metamorphosed mafic intrusive rocks metamorphosed felsic intrusive rocks (komatiites)
