Open Geospatial Consortium Interoperability Testbed 4 for CAD/GIS/BIM Integrating Building Information Models with Open Geospatial Web Services Prepared by: Paul Cote Harvard Graduate School of Design Architect of the OGC OWS-4 CGB Testbed
Main Idea The vast potential of Web-based architecture for integrating building models with geospatial context is illustrated by the simple architecture of Google Earth/Sketchup/3d warehouse The recent OGC Open Web Services Testbed for CAD/GIS/BIM provided a setting for several AEC Software Developers and researchers to demonstrate how geospatial integration of building models would be implemented with real Building Information Models and administrative information infrastructure using consensus-based, stable, industry standards for exchange and services 2
The Open Geospatial Consortium A Consensus Based Standards Organization Devoted to developing Open, Stable Standards for sharing spatial information Operates through Annual Open Web Services Interoperability Rapid Prototyping Testbeds The latest testbed, OWS-4, finished in December, 2006 The next, OWS-5 is in the planning phase now. If you like what you see in this slide show, please join the OGC and participate in OWS-5! 3
OGC Specifications in Active Use Exchange Specifications: Geographic Markup Language an XML schema for Geographic Features. Their Attributes and relationships (ISO Simple Features Profile) Service Interface Specifications Web Map Services (WMS) Provide aerial photography of ground conditions (ISO 19128) Web Feature Services (WFS) provide information about spatial entities and their attributes. (ISO Draft) Web Catalog Services (CS/W) provide a means of registering, and discovering and compiling information from web servers distributed across the internet. 4

Geospatial and AEC Worlds The data modeling and data exchange activities of the geospatial community have typically been concerned with the outdoor world. There are many important resources and events that occur in the indoor world the world of Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) The AEC world is very actively developing standards for the semantic modeling of buildings and related activities. The OGC Open Web Services Cad/GIS/BIM testbed explored directions for interoperability between the information models of the Geospatial and AEC worlds 7
Why Integrate Geospatial Information Models with AEC Workflows? The Building Industry has a strong business case for integrating AEC workflows and data models with Open Geospatial Web Services Architecture. Georeferencing of building models will facilitate coordination of building projects and space management when more than one site is involved Contextual information from OGC Web Services will be useful in the site planning process Catalog services will assist in locating specific resources from collections of spatially referenced building models 8
Why Integrate AEC information models with Geospatial Infrastructure? The geospatial information infrastructure community has a strong business case for integrating AEC data models with Open Geospatial Web Services Architecture. There are many applications that require building information over broad areas: Urban Planning; Wide-Area Space Planning; Emergency Preparedness / Management; etc. Building Information Models are likely to hold the most authoritative and up-to-date information for some buildings The most authoritative and detailed city models will incorporate information from BIM 9
OWS-4 CAD/GIS/BIM Sponsors & Objectives General Services Administration: Incorporate GSA BIM Guide Space Assessment capabilities in an web services architecture National Geospatial Intelligence Agency Develop three dimensional visualization aspects of OGC Interoperability Program 10
