Method, Density 1. Use examples to explain the various branches of science. 2. Distinguish between qualitative and quantitative observations. 3. List the SI units of measurement and common prefixes. 4. Convert units using dimensional analysis 5. Diagram and explain the various components of experimental design. 6. Calculate the density of an object from experimental data.
2 Unit II Matter, Change, Chemical Formulas and Equations Ch. 1, 6 1. Identify characteristics of matter. 2. Define and be able to apply physical properties to physical change. 3. Understand the difference between physical change and chemical change. 4. Apply the law of conservation of mass. 5. Explain the difference between an elements, compounds, & mixtures 6. Describe matter and explain how it can be separated. 7. Interpret chemical formulas 8. Express chemical changes using chemical equations 9. Balance chemical equations. 10. Describe how Avogadro s number is related to a mole of any substance. 11. Calculate the mass of a mole of any substance. 12. Use molar mass to convert between mass and moles of a substance.
3 Unit III: Periodic Table and Atomic Structure, Bonding, Moles Ch. 2, 3, 4, Distinguish among protons, electrons, and neutrons in terms of mass and charge. 2. Describe the structure of the atom. 3. Explain why isotopes differ and why atomic masses are not whole numbers. 4. Describe electron behavior using the Quantum Mechanical Theory. 5. Identify the position of groups, periods, and different chemical families on the periodic table. 6. Summarize the development of atomic theory 7. Explain the significance of quantized energies of electrons as they relate to the quantum mechanical model of the atom. 8. Explain why you can infer the properties of an element based on those of the other elements in the periodic table. 9. Use the electron configurations to classify elements as noble gases, representative elements, transition metals, or inner transition metals. 10. Distinguish between ionic and molecular compounds. 11. Relate cations and anions to metals and nonmetals. 12. Know the charges of the formulas for monatomic ions using the periodic table. 13. Use the periodic table to infer the number of valence electrons in an atom and draw its electron dot structure. 14. Describe the formation of cations from metals and of anions from nonmetals. 15. Use electron dot structures to show the formation of single, double, and triple covalent bonds.

Explain gas behavior using the kinetic molecular theory. 3. Describe the four variables that define a gaseous system quantitatively. 4. Use standard conditions to determine the amount of gas used or produced in a chemical reaction. 5. Use ideal gas behavior and solve the following gas laws: Charles' Law Boyle's Law Gay-Lussac s Law 6. Relate attractive forces to boiling points, volatility, and surface tension, and vapor pressure. 7. Create graphs that are proportionally constructed, properly labeled using Software. 8. Describe and analyze chemical and physical processes in terms of energy flow 9. Prove the law of conservation of energy 10. Diagram and explain the endothermic and exothermic processes during chemical and physical changes
