Summary: 14 Undergraduate students mentored (8 are coauthors on publications) 5 Graduate students with theses mentored (all 5 are coauthors on publications) Impact on the Field : (required for promotion: no impact statement is required) My research is focused on the electrochemical (the interactions of electricity with matter) and light emitting properties of chemical systems and with various aspects of chemical education (development of laboratories, case studies, etc). Its impact on the field is clear from the number of publications ( 44 peer-reviewed articles since arriving at MSU in 1997), the number of citations (over 500 since 1997 and 50 since 2007), the impact factors of the journals (from to 5.695), and the 5

6 invited presentations at both national and international venues. For example, invited presentations have been made in Ireland (2004 ), Italy (2008 and, potentially, 20 14), China (2009) and Australia (20 1 0). Invitations to present in China in 2011 and 2013 were declined due to inadequate funds for international travel. Another measure of the impact of my research program is having an h-index factor of23. The h-index attempts to measure both the productivity and impact of a scholar's published work. The h index is based on a scholar's list of publications ranked in descending order, with the most highly cited article first. For example, an h-index of 23 indicates (roughly) that 23 of my papers have been cited in the peer-reviewed literature 23 times or more ( Typically, faculty at Research 1 (R1) institutions are expected to have an h-index of 15 or higher. 6

7 Mark M. Richter Research Matrix ( ) CHM Department Requirements 1 Peer-Reviewed Publications (Minimum of 4 required} Review Article (none required for promotion) Book chapter (none required for promotion) Presentations at professional meetings (minimum of one) Grants submitted (minimum of 5 unless funding is obtained) Invited Presentations Other Presentations Student Presentations External Funding Agency Internal (i.e., MSU} Grants Active (both internal and external} Mentoring Students (Minimum of four different students for a minimum of 1-semester each, and at least one student should be a graduate student}' Undergraduate Graduate w/thesis Impact on the field The impact on the field is clear from the number of publications, the number of citations, the impact factors of the journals, invited presentations at both national and international venues, and an h-index factor of 23. Please see vita for more details on each of these indicators. 1 The application packet was created based on the CHM Department Policy on Evaluation, Promotion, Tenure and Annual Appointment; approved January 24, The nwnbers in each column represent students in the group in that year so the same student might appear in more than one column.
