Directed undergraduate student research projects as part both of independent studies and of honors projects. The projects included mentoring students in literature searches, experiment design, advanced laboratory techniques and procedures, data analysis, and the presentation of results via posters, research papers, and verbal presentations. Research projects and students mentored include: 1. Investigation of the distance between combining sites of and dynamic flexibility studies of antibody IgE protein molecules in aqueous solution using fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). This study is a continuation of previous research, and has involved several students. students mentored: Erin Holmes Jeramie Henderson Mario Herrera Stephanie Garcia 2. Quantification and standardization of growth curves of e. coli under systematically varied doses of natural oils. This was part of a project first begun by student Sara Bullock under a different advisor (Rhonda Raymond, Ph.D.) as part of her honors project. The work culminated in a successful honors thesis and a publication-grade thesis report. student mentored: Sara Bullock (honors thesis). Analysis of Altered Binding Kinetics of Antibody IgG and Ligand DNSyl in the Presence of Fc Neonatal Receptor FcRn Cornell University, Ithaca NY Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology Biophysical Chemistry Research Assistant. As a graduate student, I pursued several projects, including (1) using the spectrofluorimetric technique fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) to investigate human IgG protein conformation in solution upon binding to a neonatal receptor, (2) creating green fluorescent protein (GFP) vector constructs analogous to specific inner-leaflet acyl chain anchored proteins using molecular biological techniques, (3) using fluorescence confocal microscopy to image co-redistribution of these GFP constructs with the aggregated transmembrane IgE cell surface receptor protein FcεRI, (4) using computer intensive mathematical linear cross correlation to analyze and compare the degree of co-aggregation, (5) assembling and using a fluorescence photobleaching recovery (FPR) instrument to investigate two dimensional lateral diffusion of these constructs on the inner leaflet, and (6) programming necessary code in C++ for the analysis of the FPR data Wayne State University, Detroit MI Department of Mathematics Undergraduate Researcher. Used the computer program Mathematica to develop a mathematical model of the spectral emission shift of ethidium bromide upon interchelation into λ-phage DNA. Assisted in real time videography of ethidium bromide DNA diffusion through gel-phase medium under an externally applied electric potential.
