1 Achieving Suspension in Body Washes Beyond cleansing, a number of functional ingredients are used in body washes either to provide additional aesthetic properties, or additional claims such as exfoliation or moisturization. These functional ingredients are in most cases either non-water soluble or have a different density than the surfactant matrix, and as a result, are difficult to stabilize as they tend to sediment or cream. Thus, these ingredients require an efficient suspension system. Dow Personal Care technologies can address this challenge through the use of ACULYN 38 or ACULYN 88 Rheology Modifiers. ACULYN 38 and ACULYN 88 Rheology Modifiers have different performance profiles in terms of suspension, rheological properties and clarity of the system and thus, depending on the ingredient to suspend, one of the two might be a better solution than the other. ACULYN 88 Rheology Modifier is often preferred for thick-pouring systems, whereas ACULYN 38 Rheology Modifier is recommended for thin-pouring systems. This is related to their relative efficiency in terms of viscosity building, as shown in the following graph. ACULYN Rheology Modifiers Tool Box ACULYN 88 ACULYN 88 + Laponite VISCOSITY ACULYN 38 SUSPENSION POWER The synergistic effect between ACULYN 88 Rheology Modifier and Laponite* will allow the formulator to further enhance the suspension capabilities of the formulation. Aculyn 38 and Aculyn 88 will also deliver differences in terms of clarity and may guide the formulator to pick the most appropriate grade. Aculyn 38 tends to give translucent to clear systems particularly in the ph range 7 whereas Aculyn 88 delivers crystal clear systems for ph > 6.5. While these polymers are complimentary in terms of obtaining successful stabilization and suspension in the usual body wash ph range, please find as follows two typical formulations illustrating the use of Aculyn 38 to stabilize pearlizing agents such as EGDS, and the use of Aculyn 88 to suspend beads or visual cues: * Laponite is a trademark of Rockwood Additives

4 Other body washes require suspension aids, such as formulations based on a combination of traditional surfactant and soaps. These combinations are very popular in Asia for their outstanding rinseability properties. Low or high molecular weight fatty acids can be used, and the lower molecular weight will be more soluble than the higher molecular weight fatty acid. The choice of the fatty acid will drive the selection of the suspension aid. Clear formulations can be achieved using lower molecular weight fatty acid and thus, in their presence, the preferred suspension aid is ACULYN 88 Rheology Modifier. Formulations based on combinations using higher molecular weight fatty acids require the use of ACULYN 38 Rheology Modifier to achieve efficient suspension since these types are even more insoluble in water. Transparency is not the key criteria here since the system will be opaque anyhow. EXFOLIATING SOAP/SURFACTANT MIXED-BASED SHOWER GEL Exfoliate dead skin, quick rinse off Featuring: ACULYN 88 Rheology Modifier NEOLONE 950 Preservative Ingredients Phase Trade Name % Wt.
