1 Technical Data Sheet ACRYSOL RM-5000 Description ACRYSOL RM-5000 is a solvent-free* nonionic associative rheology modifier suitable for both interior and exterior latex paints. It offers a nearly Newtonian viscosity profile that yields a very appealing balance of flow and leveling properties and exceptional film build. What distinguishes from other HEUR products is its excellent efficiency in building viscosity in the upper end of the shear spectrum and the ability to furnish truly outstanding flow properties in all types of paints. The exceptional efficiency of as much as 20 to 40 percent more effective in generating high-shear (ICI) viscosity in a typical architectural coating formulation (Table 1) can yield major benefits. First is an opportunity for a notable savings in raw material costs. Just as important, by allowing formulators the opportunity to reduce the amount of thickening agent in their formulations, facilitates better corrosion and water resistance possible. The outstanding efficiency of in co-thickened formulations is shown in Figure 1. * - manufactured without added solvent Page 1 of 12 ACRYSOL RM-5000 / Dow Coating Materials 03/2013, Rev. 0
2 Feature and Benefits Features Efficient mid - and high-shear Viscosity development Excellent flow and leveling, hiding uniform film formation and gloss development Solvent - free*, water based Supplied as low viscosity liquid Benefits Excellent brush drag, film build, spatter resistance; reduced levels required for comparable rheology Excellent finished paint appearance Low - VOC formulations Easy handling and incorporation into paint mix Typical Physical Properties The following properties are typical but should not be considered specifications Properties Typical Values Apperance Hazy off-white liquid Solids content, % Liquid phase water Brookfield C, as supplied, cp (max) 4,000 Density, lb/gal (U.S.) 8.7 The features offered by ACRYSOL RM-5000 make it especially valuable in both low-solids formulations based on conventional binders and highperformance, low-voc semigloss paints based on all-acrylic binders such as RHOPLEX SG-30 Emulsion. Both types of paints often require undesirably high levels of conventional HEUR modifiers. is also well suited to low-voc gloss enamels formulated with binders such as RHOPLE HG-700 Emulsion; it can sometimes serve as a sole thickening agent in such coatings. High-gloss enamels based on RHOPLEX HG-700 Emulsion can be formulated with to offer flow and sag resistance comparable to that of alkyd formulations. An example is Figure 2 showing that the high-gloss formulation containing on the left has virtually the same flow and sag properties as that of the high-gloss alkyd formulation on the right. 3 Classic HEUR Advantages Applications While giving exceptional thickening efficiency, ACRYSOL RM-5000 also offers all the attributes that have made other HEUR rheology modifiers so attractive. It builds viscosity through association, which results in paint films exhibiting more consistent gloss and hiding than formulations employing nonassociative (e.g., HEC) products. It is manufactured without the use of solvents, which makes it a valuable tool for formulators striving to meet increasingly stringent VOC limits. is supplied as a low-viscosity liquid that is easier to handle and formulate than powdered cellulosic products. Finally, it does not support microbial growth in the paint film. The ability of ACRYSOL RM-5000 to generate high-shear viscosity (Figure 3) makes it an especially valuable complement to-thickening agents designed primarily to build mid-shear (Krebs) viscosity (e.g., ACRYSOL RM-995, ACRYSOL RM-825,, and s) or low-shear (Brookfield) viscosity (e.g., ACRYSOL RM-12W and most cellulosics). By employing and one (or more) of these other agents, formulators can obtain a wide range of viscosity profiles in flat through gloss latex paints. Its aqueous nature also makes well suited for use in paint formulations containing low levels of VOC, no formaldehyde, and no free ammonia. 4 The balance of properties offered by ACRYSOL RM-5000 renders it particularly valuable in the following types of formulations: Paints based on solvent-free latex binders. High-opacity, high-build coatings for exterior substrates that require improved hiding and excellent exterior durability (water resistance). Interior wall paints based on all types of emulsions (e.g., ROVACE 9900, RHOPLEX SG-10M, and RHOPLEX SG-30 Emulsions); offers excellent performance and application properties in these formulations. Gloss paints formulated with small-particle hydrophobic acrylic gloss binders such as RHOPLEX HG-700 Emulsions; the outstanding flow and leveling properties and film continuity furnished by help facilitate uniform light reflectance. is particularly beneficial in low-solvent semigloss paints formulated with hydrophilic binders such as RHOPLEX SG-30 Emulsion. These binders have a surface treatment that offers them a greater associative thickener demand than many conventional all-acrylic binders. As a result, more traditional HEUR products do not provide sufficient ICI viscosity at economical use levels with these new emulsions. Such is not the case with due to its greater ICI-viscosity-building efficiency. Formulating Guidelines Generally speaking, the decision of how to use ACRYSOL RM-5000 by itself or with another modifier is dictated by the rheological needs of the paint formulation. As indicated previously, is similar to ACRYSOL RM-2020 NPR in that it is designed specifically to provide ICI viscosity in the upper end of the shear spectrum. Consequently, although it does provide some mid-shear (KU) viscosity, is typically used with a KU-building product such as ACYRYSOL RM-995. If sag resistance is a priority, manufacturers may be able to obtain the rheological character they seek with a combination of and a Brookfield efficient agent such as ACRYSOL RM-12W or s or a cellulosic agent. The use of as the sole thickening agent is generally limited to brush-applied gloss formulations based on hydrophobic, small-particle binders (e.g., RHOPLEX SG-10M Emulsion). In these formulations, is typically sufficiently effective at building mid-shear viscosity to eliminate the need for a complementary modifier. For roller application, however, should be used in combination with another thickener(s). More in-can structure can be attained by cothickening with ACRYSOL RM-995 or RM-825 s. The following table provides a brief guide to choosing the most appropriate combination of ACRYSOL RM-5000 and other HEUR rheology modifiers for different types of paint formulations. Additional levels of RM-6000 or Rheology Modifier to improve ICI viscosity. Determining Appropriate ACRYSOL Usage Levels As with any thickening agent, the paint manufacturer s principal task in formulating ACRYSOL RM-5000 centers on determining the proper use level. Most needs can be satisfied with an amount of ranging from 5.0 to 25.0 pounds per 100 gallons of paint; the specific quantity required depends on a number of factors. Like all HEUR rheology modifiers, functions principally through its interactions or associations with other ingredients in the paint formulation. Consequently, any factor that affects the ability of to associate can impact the amount of rheology modifier required. Such factors include other formulation ingredients, as well as ph and volume solids of the formulation. Effect of Formulation Ingredients Binder Generally speaking, the nature of the binder particle size and size distribution, composition, and stabilizing system plays the largest role in determining how much thickener a formulation will need. Small-particle hydrophobic binders (e.g., RHOPLEX SG-10M Emulsion) encourage association, so ACRYSOL RM-5000 will be most efficient in thickening formulations based on these emulsions. Interfacial Agents The choice of interfacial agents (surfactants and dispersants) can also help govern the thickening efficiency of because they affect its ability to react with the solid elements in the paint. Surfactants The hydrophobic nature of surfactants allows them to compete with rheology modifier for adsorption onto binder particle surfaces. If the surfactant is able to displace the rheology modifier from binder particles completely, the modifier s ability to form associations, and thus provide viscosity especially in the low-shear range is inhibited. Thus, the type and quantity of surfactants employed in the paint formulation become extremely important. The formulator must also be wary of predispersed colorants in this regard; these products generally contain surfactants for stability and color acceptance. Page 6 of 12 ACRYSOL RM-5000 / Dow Coating Materials 03/2013, Rev. 0
7 Dispersants When using ACRYSOL RM-5000, formulators should avoid polyacid dispersants such as TAMOL 850, TAMOL 963, and TAMOL 1254 Dispersants if at all possible. The carboxyl functionality of these products provides large concentrations of ions that make HEUR thickeners insoluble. The result can be phase separation, possibly even syneresis. In testing conducted by Dow scientists, good results have been achieved with standard acid copolymer dispersants. TAMOL 731A Dispersant has performed best in matte paints; TAMOL 1124 Dispersant has distinguished itself in semigloss formulations; and TAMOL 681 and TAMOL 165 A Dispersants have proven themselves the top choices for high-gloss paints. Cosolvents Solvents that are not soluble in water have little or no effect on the rheology of paints containing ACRYSOL RM Water-miscible cosolvents, however, tend to inhibit the degree of association achieved with this new HEUR modifier and so compromise its ability to provide mid-shear viscosity. The effect that water-miscible cosolvents can have varies. Testing has demonstrated that products such as ethylene glycol and propylene glycol have the least impact; butyl CARBITOL Solvent has the most. The viscosity-suppressing ability of these products makes it possible for formulators to use them in reducing low-shear (Brookfield) viscosity, thereby enhancing flow and leveling. There are drawbacks to using solvents in this fashion, however. They increase raw material costs, and because they are water-soluble, they may reduce the paint s water resistance. Of course, as in the case of interfacial agents, the formulator must account for the cosolvent contributed by predispersed colorants. Paint ph Control Incorporation Starting Point Formulations In some paints, high ph can cause the binder particles to swell, elevating viscosity and causing instability. To help manufacturers obtain the rheological properties they expect when formulating with ACRYSOL RM-5000 and to avoid stability problems, ph should be maintained in the range from 8.5 to 9.0 inclusive. In ammonia-free, low-voc formulations, we have successfully used permanent bases such as sodium or potassium hydroxide or amines to accomplish this objective. ACRYSOL RM-5000 is supplied as a pourable, pumpable liquid that contains no added solvent. It can be added to the paint at any stage of the manufacturing process. Following are four starting point formulations that employ ACRYSOL RM-5000 Rheology Modifier. These formulations have been qualified with the specified components; substitutions should be tested carefully to ensure that users obtain the same properties reported here.
