Didely Extra Credit for a creative periodic table Music/ video games/. In a self-service store, the products are grouped according to similar characteristics. With a logical classification system, finding and comparing products is easy. You will learn how elements are arranged in the periodic table and what that arrangement reveals about the elements. 1
LiCl NaCl KCl RbCl CsCl White solids soluble in water conduct electricity NaF NaCl NaBr NaI White solids soluble in water conduct electricity From new elements discovered, including H 2, N 2 & O 2. German He grouped elements into TRIADS (3 elements with similar properties). Chlorine, bromine, and iodine have very similar chemical properties. Similar to Groups and Families elements Law of Octave or Mendeleyev Duh-mee -tree ee-vah -nuh-vich min-dil-yah -uhf 2
Russian Chemist Father of Periodic Table Published the 1 st useful periodic table in Only 63 known elements at the time. Similar to a monthly calendar Physical and chemical properties repeated every 7 elements. However, the noble gases weren t know, yet or it would have been every 8 th element 3
Based on Inc. Atomic Mass and Chemical Combinations He left blank for unknown elements & predicted their physical properties & chemical combinations. In 1871 he predicted Germanium to have a Boiling Point of 2935 o C In 1885 Ge was discovered & had a Boiling Point of 2834 o C He also predicted Ga & Sc Likewise he predicted a compound CS 2 He also was writing a chemistry textbook that was widely used. 4
GERMAN CHEMIST Had a table of the 57 elements in 1868, but didn t publish it until Made some prediction, but not as bold as Mendeleev English Chemist Based table on Atomic Number. The physical and chemical properties of the elements are periodic functions of their atomic numbers. 5

Metals are good conductors of heat and electric current. 80% of elements are metals. Metals have a high l d il d Nonmetals In general, nonmetals are poor conductors of heat and electric current. Most nonmetals are gases Metalloids A metalloid generally has properties that are similar to those of metals and nonmetals. The behavior of a metalloid can be controlled by changing conditions. If a small amount of boron is mixed with silicon, the mixture is a good conductor of electric current. Silicon can be cut into wafers, and used to make computer chips. Alkali Metals Alkaline Earth Metal Halogens Noble Gases In pure state: silvery appearance, soft..cut with knife, react to water to form H 2, not naturally found, rusts easily in air 9
In pure state: Harder, denser & stronger than alkali metals, Less reactive than Alkali metals, but still react. Not found in nature. Most reactive Non-metals, Rxn with metals, Diatomic Br2 Cl2 I2 Non-reactive Form no compounds 10
