4 Brief report of the Lecture Workshop This Workshop was held for the benefit of undergraduate and post-graduate students and teachers from Fergusson as well as other colleges in Pune. There were 182 participants from the interdisciplinary science subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Environmental Science and Geology. The Workshop was held on 10 and 11 October Dr Haribhau Gholap (Coordinator), Fergusson College, welcomed the participants and resource persons of the workshop. Dr Ravindrasinh Pardeshi (Principal, Fergusson College) inaugurating the Workshop emphasized the topical importance of nanotechnology and thanked the Academies for supporting the Workshop for the benefit of students and teachers in Pune. In the first session Prof. Sulabha Kulkarni (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune) delivered two lectures. She first gave a historical perspective of Nanotechnology and introduced quantum dots, metal nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, graphene etc. She also discussed a variety of nanomaterial synthesis and characterization techniques. She briefly outlined the applications of nanomaterials in energy, medical field and variety of other areas. The second session speaker was Prof. Milind Watve (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune) who also delivered two lectures. He emphasized that medical field indeed benefitted tremendously by nanotechnology. In his lectures he also covered various issues related to diabetes. He also talked on some ecological aspects. On the second day, i.e. 11 October 2014, Dr S C Gopinath (National Chemical Laboratory, Pune) gave two lectures. He discussed the current state of research in utilizing the solar energy, fuel cells and role of nanomaterials in energy-related problems. He also talked about the need and advantages of nanotechnology research in water splitting. He talked about nanomaterials analysis techniques and explained how photoelectron spectroscopy becomes an important tool in the analysis of nanomaterials. Prof. Santosh Haram (Chemistry Department, Savitribai Phule University of Pune) delivered two lectures in the last session of the Workshop. He talked on the use of nanotechnology in the

5 field of energy. He explained the principle of solar cells, types of solar cells (like dye sensitized, organic, inorganic, hybrid, perovskite etc) and elaborated the role of nanomaterials in the solar cells. He talked about the advantages of nanomaterials, efficiency of solar cells as well as made comparison of first, second and third generation of solar cells. He also covered the importance of electrochemistry in understanding nanomaterials. All the sessions were highly interactive and the curiosity and enthusiasm of the students was overwhelming. In the concluding session some students and teachers gave the feedback about Lecture Workshop. Dr. Ravindrasinh Pardeshi promised that more such workshops will be held for the students. Prof. Sulabha Kulkarni hoped that the Workshop was useful to the students and teachers. At the end Dr. D.D.Choughule (Head, Department of Physics, Fergusson College) thanked the Indian Academies, the organizers, the speakers and the participants of the Workshop. Photos:
