5 Speaker s Biography Prof. Dr. Wataru Ueda Emeritus Professor Wataru Ueda is a world-renowned professor that expert in catalytic selective oxidation of light alkanes over solid catalysts having controlled structures, developments of new synthetic method of solid catalysts based on unit synthesis, new oxidation processes for generating energy and for cleaning air and water & developments of new solid-state catalysts for conversion of biomass-derived. He holds a vast experience as research associate at the Research Laboratories of Resources Utilization, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Ramsey memorial fellow at the Department of Physical Chemistry, Cambridge University and Royal Institution, UK, working with Prof. J. M. Thomas and lecturer at Department of Environmental Chemistry and Engineering, Tokyo Institute of Technology. His professor carrier starts at the Department of Materials Chemistry and Engineering, Science University of Tokyo in Yamaguchi. He also a professor at the Catalysis Research Centre, Hokkaido University and Department of Material and Life Chemistry, Faculty of Engineering, Kanagawa University. He is Emeritus professor of Hokkaido University and specially appointed professor of Tokyo Institute of Technology, visiting professor of Malaya University.

6 Speaker s Biography Prof. Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin Prof. Dr. Taufiq Yap Yun Hin is from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. He obtained his Diploma in Agriculture in 1987 at UPM, BSc (hons) in Chemistry in 1992, MSc in Natural Products Chemistry in 1994, both also from UPM and PhD in Heterogeneous Catalysis in 1997 at University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), UK. Prof. Taufiq Yap s research interests encompass a broad area involving heterogeneous catalysis, advanced materials for energy and natural products chemistry. Prof. Taufiq has authored and co-authored more than 280 articles in various international and national refereed journals including those with high impact factor. He has received several awards that include Excellent Researcher Award (2002 and 2005), Eminent Scientist Award (2003), Top Research Scientist Malaysia, (2002), Outstanding Young Malaysian Award (2008) and MASS Young Researcher Award (2008), Overseas Advanced Research Fellowship twice (Oct-Dec 2004 and Jun-July 2007) at the School of Chemistry, Cardiff University, UK. Prof. Taufiq is a Chartered Chemist and Professional Member (CChem., MRSC) of the Royal Society of Chemistry, U.K. since 1997, awarded as a Fellow of The Royal Society of Chemistry, UK (2008), Fellow of the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (since 2009), Associate Member of Institution of Chemicals Engineers (AMIChemE), UK, member of the Malaysian Natural Products Society and Malaysian Society for Engineering and Technology (mset), an Executive Council member (2005) of the Academic Staff Association of Universiti Putra Malaysia and Executive Board Member of the Malaysian Analytical Sciences Association ( and 2010-present).

7 Speaker s Biography Assistant Prof. Dr. Ricca Rahman Nasaruddin Dr. Ricca is a new Assistant Professor at Department of Biotechnology Engineering, Kulliyyah of Engineering, International Islamic University Malaysia. Previously, she did her Ph.D. under Bionanometals and Green Catalysis Research Groups at the Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS). Her research focus was mainly about fundamental understanding of atomically precise ligand-protected gold nanoclusters for catalytic applications. She has actively published her research works in ISI indexed journals such as Chemistry, A European Journal, ChemCatChem, Coordination Chemistry Review and Nanoscale. Currently, her research interests are focusing on the development of inorganic nanomaterials for sustainable catalysis and biomedical applications and she actively works under Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Research Group (NanoRG) in her faculty. Associate Prof. Dr. Juan Joon Ching Dr Joon Ching Juan is an Associate Professor of Catalysis at Nanotechnology and Catalysis Research Centre (NANOCAT), University of Malaysia, Malaysia and also appointed as a Senior Research Fellow (Adjunct) position at Monash University, Sunway Campus. He has been actively involved in various research activities especially in the area of catalysis. Most of his research activities are focused on understanding the nano-structure of catalyst to be applied in environmental and energy. Up to date, he has managed to publish more than 100 publications and his h-index is 18. With his expertise and experience, he became an author for 3 books and received competitive national and international grants such as The World Academy of Science Grant (TWAS, UNESCO), E-science fund (MOSTI), Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS, MOE), etc. As strong believer of research with innovation, he has filed five patents to be used in industries. He is also the recipient of several awards including National Young Scientist Award (2016), Best reviewer award from Elsevier (2015), Pro Vice Chancellor Award in Research and Teaching (2010, 2011 and 2012), Best Thesis Award (2008), and just few to mention.

8 Speaker s Biography Ir. Dr. Lai Chin Wei IR. DR. LAI CHIN WEI is a senior lecturer in the Nanotechnology & Catalysis Research Centre, University of Malaya. He received his Ph.D. (2013) from School of Materials and Mineral Resources Engineering, University of Science Malaysia in nanomaterials and nanoscience. Lai s main research interests are in the areas of chemically modified metal oxide photocatalysts and carbon graphene materials, especially apply in environmental pollution management and solar energy technology. Lai has contributed immensely to the development and enhancement in science & technology in Malaysia, particularly in developing, optimizing and simplifying the technology lies in the synthesis of nanoparticles, metal oxide nano-architecture and carbon/graphene materials which are of high significance for green energy and environment applications. Lai s works have been published in more than 120 refereed international top-tier journals with h-index of 18 and 100 international proceedings in materials science, physics, chemistry, and renewable energy researches. Dr. Azman Ma amor Ma amor worked as research officer and chemist in private and public sectors for more than 5 years before joining University Malaya. He has been working as a senior lecturer at Chemistry Department, Faculty of Science, University Malaya after completed his PhD student at School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Queen s University of Belfast, United Kingdom in 2012 under supervision of Prof. David Rooney in the research of Evaluation of palladium and nickel supported catalysts for batch to continuous resorcinol hydrogenation using multiphase reactors. Currently he has been awarded several research grants from University Malaya and Ministry of Education in the research of The controlled gold nano-particle migration in supported gold bimetallic catalyst in alkyl-substituted benzenes oxidation, Gold nanoparticles supported on Graphene as catalysts for aldehyde hydrosilytion and The synthesis of nanoscale hydroxyapatite from natural clamshell via sonochemical method. He is currently supervised 3 PhD and 4 Master students.

9 Speaker s Biography Associate Prof. Dr. Ong Boon Hoong Dr. Ong Boon Hoong is an Associate Professor at Nanotechnology and Catalysis Research Centre (NANOCAT), University of Malaya (UM) since Prior to the appointment at UM, he has been served 10 years at the Faculty of Engineering, Multimedia University, Malaysia. Dr. Ong received both his B.Sc.(Hons) and Ph.D in Materials Science from the National University of Malaysia. He is member of Young Scientist Networks-Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM). He and his team are currently working on the synthesis and design of advanced functional nanomaterials, particularly semiconductor and magnetic nanostructures, and explore their potential applications in environment, energy, nanoelectronics and biomedicine.
