3. BRIEF REPORT OF LECTURE WORKSHOP ON SUPRAMOLECULAR CHEMISTRY- SYNTHESIS AND APPLICATION Department of Chemistry, Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya, Bilaspur, C.G. has hosted the first Science Academies lecture-workshop by the financial help of the three Science Academies of India (i.e., I.A.Sc.,Bangalore; INSA, New Delhi & NASI, Allahabad) during 21 22nd August, 2015 in the Vishwavidyalaya. The theme of this Science Academies lecture-workshop was SUPRAMOLECULAR CHEMISTRY - SYNTHESIS AND APPLICATION, a highly inter/multidisciplinary topic of contemporary research interests among various scientific disciplines ranging from chemistry, biology, materials, theoretical physics/chemistry etc. This workshop was envisioned mainly for the local students and college teachers of this region of socially and economically challenged. Renowned teachers/scientists were invited to deliver lectures on the basic aspects of supramolecular chemistry, their syntheses and far reaching applications, as the term in the present era refers to almost everything as supramolecular. The proposed lecture workshop has contributed significantly in widening the knowledge of scientific information in the field of supramolecular chemistry, which demonstrated the versatile modes by which organic ligands and metal ion auxiliaries can selfassemblies into robust hybrid inorganic-organic arrays. The knowledge acquired from this lecture workshop has an impact of transmitting the excitement of research to the budding students of Chemistry and should attract bright students to a rewarding research career. This area of Chattisgarh is socially and economically challenged. There is no specialized teacher of this topic in the local colleges and educational institutions. The resource persons are well-known and learned in the proposed field. So the lecture workshop has also enlightened and motivated the research scholars and teachers of local colleges, universities and other education institutes of higher learning. Most of the resource persons are the active fellow of the Academy, so their gracious presence certainly motivated the students and teaching community of this region. The registration and inauguration was held at 9.00 am on 21st August, 2015 in the Rajat Jayanti Sabhaghar of Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya. In short inauguration Dr. S.K. Singh, Associate Prof. of the Chemistry department, formally 7
welcomed the gathering by briefly mentioning the activities, faculty & student strength, external funding by DST, CSIR, DRDO, UGC etc. of the department. It is worth notable though the chemistry department of Guru Ghasidas Vishwavidyalaya started its journey only on 2009, within a small span of time it has developed a lot. The Department offers both UG and PG level advanced courses in Chemical Sciences along with an integrated 5 years Master programme with exit option after completing 3 years B. Sc. (Hon s). The Department is also offering a Ph. D. programme in frontier areas of Chemical Sciences. At present almost thirty research scholars are working in the Department. Four major specialized courses like Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Analytical Chemistry are offered in M. Sc. course. The department is also conducting the B. Tech. (IT) chemistry courses, where almost 500 students are studying. The students are monitored and evaluated by regular class tests, seminars, assignments, mid and end-semester examinations. High percentage of students qualifies UGC-CSIR NET, GATE and SLET exams. Currently, thirty research scholars are working in the Department. The department is having eleven regular well qualified faculty members and well equipped laboratory with sophisticated instruments. Vice-chancellor, Prof. S.P. Singh, chief-guest of the program gave short lecture for inaugural blessing. Prof. G.K. Patra, co-ordinator of the Workshop delivered short introduction about the Theme of the workshop and Dr. P.S. Mukherjee, Convenor of the Workshop discussed about the genesis and functions of the three science academies of India. He mentioned about the summer fellowship program to teachers as well as students, sponsored by the academies and urged the participants to take active part in the workshop. Dr. Charu Arora, Associate Prof. of chemistry Department extended the vote of thanks. The help and support that have been received from Dr. P. S. Mukherjee and T. D. Mahabaleswara, Co-ordinator of Science Education Panel during various stages of organizing this event was gratefully acknowledged. The formal inauguration was followed by a high tea break. While about 100 invitation cards have been distributed to various colleges and departments, about 300 guests attended this brief and informal inauguration. The first lecture was delivered by Dr. P.S. Mukherjee, from Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry, IISc-Bangalore, on Self-assembled Discrete Structures. He motivated the students a lot through his illuminating and thoughtprovoking lecture. The students heard with rapt attention to his elegant talk, which highlighted the basic idea of supramolecular self-assembly and use of self-assembly 8
protocol for the design of complex molecular architectures employing metal-ligand coordination bond as driving force. He discussed about the nitro-aromatic sensors. He described the inter-disciplinary nature of the supramolecular chemistry and supramolecular polymer. He also discussed various activities open for the students in his institute and how they may avail the opportunities. He also described various important concepts and terminologies associated with supramolecular chemistry. Next lecture was delivered by Prof. Asutosh Ghosh, from University of Calcutta on the topic making of a new family of trinuclear Ni(II) single-molecule magnets: strategy, failure, success and serendipity. He discussed about the N 2 O donor ligands and their various binuclear metal complexes and their magnetic characters. Starting from the conventional magnetism exhibited by metals like Fe, he has taken all through a journey to magnetism exhibited by molecules. The talk was very lively and students were quite interested and actively participated by raising several questions and getting their doubts cleared. It was something unbelievable for them to hear how dinuclear complexes are formed and how they afford interesting magnetic behaviour. Fourth lecture was delivered by Prof. R.N. Patel, from A.P.S. University Rewa on the topic Supramolecular chemistry of coordination compounds. He discussed about the coordination bonding, hydrogen bonding, π π stacking interactions as well as van der Waals forces. He explained how N H N, N H O and O H O hydrogen bonds are widely used for organization of the components in the design of a large number and different types of supramolecular architectures as ribbons, rosettes, layers, tubes, rods, spheres and sheets. The last lecture of the first day was delivered by Prof. Samar K Das of Central University, Hyderabad. He very nicely elaborated Supramolecular Chemistry of Metal-Oxo Clusters and described the potentiality of supramolecular chemistry in construction of well-defined architectures. He also described the separation of enantiomer by spontaneous resolution.by the end of the day, many students who didn t even knew what is supramolecular chemistry nor heard of it before, were comfortable with the terminology and were eager to listen to the second day speakers. The second day of the workshop started at 8.00 am with the lecture of Prof. K. Biradha on the topic, Crystal Engineering: Design Principles and Functional Materials. This lecture highlighted the importance of crystal engineering in terms of 9
design of materials using hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds and exploration of their functional properties. Next lecture was delivered by Prof. A. Ghosh on Hetero-metallic complexes: facile synthesis, nuclearity, isomerization, catalytic activity and magnetic properties. The students actively took part by answering each and every question raised by him to judge their fundamental concepts. They ve been well appreciated by him for their sound knowledge. After a short tea break, the next lecture was delivered by Prof. Samar Das on the topic Dithiolene Based Metal Coordination Complexes as Functional Materials: A Supramolecular Approach. He has mesmerized the audience by his eloquences and sense of humour. He discussed about the co-ordination polymers of dithiolene and their theoretical studies. He mentioned the supramolecular architecture of pseudorotaxane and rotaxane and solvent dependent crystal engineering. After the lecture of Prof. Samar Das speakers and participants were given healthy lunch. During lunch, the participants were actively interacting with the speakers to clear their doubts as well as finding opportunities for them during summer. Just after the lunch, Prof. R. N. Patel delivered an interesting lecture on the topic: Supramolecular Systems in Chemistry and Biology: A General Approach. Through his talk Prof. Patel propagate the message that the study of non-covalent interactions is crucial to understanding biological processes and biological systems are the inspiration for supramolecular research. Last lecture of the two day Science Academies Lecture Workshop was delivered by Dr. P.S. Mukherjee. In his lecture Dr. Mukherjee described how the supramolecular assemblies act as nano containers to catalyse organic transformations of importance. The talk was very lively and students were quite interested and actively participated by raising several questions and getting their doubts cleared. It was something unbelievable for them to hear how assemblies act as catalysts, as opposed to the conventional catalysts they study in text books. The lectures were so impressive that after the listening to such eminent speakers, many students were discussing to pursue chemistry as honours subject. It was highly satisfactory for the organizers to see the enthusiasm and appreciation of the participants, which is quite encouraging to think of organising a second workshop. It is due to the generous support of all the three science academies that we could organise this workshop in our university. We will keep our mind the sincere help and cooperation 10
received from Dr. Partha Sarathi Mukherjee, convenor of this workshop through his valuable suggestion, guidance.
