1 Dear Future Student, I m excited to have you in my class next year! We will have a great year together and you will be excited to see how much you ve learned by the end. While this course is pretty rigorous, we will have some fun, too, and if you work hard you ll be ready to be successful on the IB Exam. There are a few keys to success in this course: Print off the unit outline for each unit and keep up with the deadlines Read the assigned topics according to the outline before the lesson Take notes/do examples in class as we do them together Do the homework every night. Some will be graded for correction, others for completion. You are welcome to consult the solutions manual to see how the problems are done if you get stuck, but make sure you try other problems on your own to make sure you know how to do it without the solutions manual. ASK QUESTIONS on problems you don t understand. Come in during Access and Office Hours for help when needed (don t wait until the Unit Test to ask questions!) Be in class as often as possible- the curriculum cannot be slowed down if we want to cover everything before the IB Exam. If you miss class, check my website and come in for help to make up what you missed as soon as possible so you don t get behind. Plan to spend at least an hour outside of class for every hour spent in. You should expect to spend at least 5 hours per week on homework/reading/etc. Every student (full diploma student or not) will complete the IA (Internal Assessment) and Group 4 Project. Textbook Information: You will NOT be required to buy a textbook for this course. We will have a hard copy of the Chemistry, Standard Level, for the IB Diploma 2nd Edition Student Book with etext Access Code by Catrin Brown and Mike Ford in class and you will have access to an online textbook from home. If you would prefer your own copy of the book, the ISBN for the book is I also highly recommend (but don t require) that you buy the Cambridge University Press Chemistry for the IB Diploma Exam Preparation Guide 2nd ed. Edition by Steve Owen and Chris Martin. ISBN-13: ISBN-10: This will be extremely helpful in the Spring as you prepare for your IB Exam. I m attaching the summer assignment that you will need to complete by Monday, August 13th (the first Monday back from school). This assignment should take you approximately 1-2 hours, but I recommend chunking the assignment to do a few questions a week (rather than waiting to do it all the day before school starts!) 2 2018 Summer Final Study Guide You will take the Summer Final during the first few days of school. Make sure you use this study guide as a tool to ensure you re ready. This study guide is due Monday, August 13th. All questions are review from your previous Chemistry course. You may find your old Chemistry notes helpful for completing each question. Khan Academy may also be a useful resource for tutorials, practice problems, and videos. 1. Convert full notation numbers to scientific notation.
