Essential Outcomes- Science Grade/Course: 6 th grade Physical Science Outcome #1: Theme: Energy Introduced: Spring Students will demonstrate an understanding of the properties of energy and how it is transferred between different objects Describe the properties of waves, sound and light. Compare and contrast kinetic and potential energy. Differentiate between conduction, convection and radiation. Notes, graphing, labs Curriculum materials, lab equipment,, technology, science lab room Outcome #2: Theme: Engineering Introduced: Spring Students will demonstrate an understanding that advances in technology are based on the engineering processes. Demonstrate background knowledge of the engineering process. Use the engineering process to design a product. Analyzing the performance of the product Create a timeline of events, make a facts chart, construct a model, design an investigation to test performance of a model, evaluate data, use models, graphs and charts. Curriculum materials, lab equipment, technology, science lab room. Outcome#3: Theme: Matter Introduced: Fall

Students will demonstrate an understanding of the properties of matter. Demonstrate a knowledge of the properties of matter. Identifying evidence of physical changes in matter. Describe how mass is conserved during a physical change in a closed system. Describe the phases of matter and how heat affects them. Describe how heat affects the properties of matter. Measuring Matter Notes, labs, graphing, modeling Curriculum materials, lab equipment, technology, science lab room. Outcome #4: Theme: Motion Introduced: Winter Students will demonstrate an understanding of the properties of motion. Identify, measure, calculate and graph the properties of motion. Analyze how change or lack of change affects motion of an object. Compare and contrast the properties of mass and weight. Labs, graphs, modeling, notes Curriculum materials, lab equipment, technology, science lab room. Outcome #5 Theme: STEM Introduced: Throughout the year Students will create, review, and evaluate a scientific investigation using the scientific method and emerging technologies. Identify the steps of the scientific method.

Understand how to make a measurable prediction. List steps used for gathering data. Analyze data to evaluate the prediction Notes, modeling, oral presentation, labs, graphing Curriculum materials, lab equipment, technology, science lab room.

Essential Outcomes Science Grade/Course: 7 th Grade Life Science Outcome 1 Theme: STEM Introduced Students will create and evaluate scientific investigations using the scientific method and emerging technology. Demonstrate the use of the scientific method Write a measureable hypothesis Create, analyze and interpret data in order to evaluate a hypothesis Research, gather, and record data using current available technology Outcome 2 Theme: Chemistry Introduced: Students will recognize the properties of matter based on atoms and molecules. Examine the periodic table Compare elements and compounds in terms of atoms and molecules Interpret a chemical equation Outcome 3 Theme: Cells Introduced: Students will recognize the importance of cells and their interactions Create models of plants and animal cells Explain the cell theory

Identify plant and animal cells using a microscope; compare their difference and similarities Outcome 4 Theme: Ecology Introduced: Students will demonstrate the role of biotic and abiotic factors and their interactions in various ecosystems. Construct a food chain demonstrating the transfer of energy Construct a food web categorizing organism Compare and contrast different life forms by using fossil records Participate in predator/prey activities Field study activity Demonstrate the use of biotic & abiotic factors Describe the role of human on selected ecosystems Outcome 5 Theme: Human biology, diseases Introduced: Students will recognize that human beings interact and respond to organisms that cause disease. Explain the differences between pathogens (Virus, bacteria, fungi and parasite) Pick a pathogen and tell how your body responds to it Describe how vaccines work

Outcome 6 Theme: Human biology Introduced: Students will discuss human body systems. List the differences between sexual and asexual reproduction Compare and contrast meiosis and mitosis Understand the role of genes, environmental influence, inherited traits Understand interactions & function of select human body systems

Essential Outcomes Grade/Course: 8 th Grade Earth Science Outcome 1 Theme: Cycles/Systems Introduced: Throughout Students will explain the role of cycles in Earth/Space Systems Identify cycles in the earth/space; water cycle, gas cycles, rock cycle, soil formation and erosion, orbits, rotations. Investigate the impact of human activities on earth systems; research, formulate impact statements, evaluate economic bias in research. Outcome 2 Theme: Earth Structure and Changes Introduced: Fall/Winter Students will interpret earth history using geologic evidence. Identify types of geologic evidence Use geologic evidence to propose a chronology Explain the internal structure of the earth Explain the mechanism of plate tectonics and its impact on the crust and human populations. Identify the impact of weather and climate on the earth s surface Outcome 3 Theme: Energy Transfer Introduced: Throughout Students will describe how energy is transferred throughout earth/space systems

Demonstrate how energy is transferred Explain how energy is transferred in the hydrosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere and solar system. Discuss how energy transferred creates weather systems. Test, Quiz, Project, Paper, Model, Presentations, Lab Reports Outcome 4 Theme: STEM Introduced: Throughout Students will review, evaluate and interpret scientific investigation using the scientific method and emerging technologies Explore the data obtained about earth/space systems from satellites and other technologies. Explain how new technologies and scientific information impact society Evaluate scientific data to form a conclusion Formulate a solution to a problem: example-erosion prevent measures Outcome 5 Theme: Properties of Matter Introduced: Fall Students will investigate the properties of matter and identity their role in different earth systems. Investigate the properties of matter Distinguish between chemical and physical properties of matter.

Apply the concepts to earth/space systems. Outcome 6 Theme: Solar System Introduced: Fall/Spring Students will recognize that our planet is part of a solar system that has many objects with unique characteristic. Recognize that our sun is a one of many stars in the galaxy/universe. Describe the balance of forces that keep objects in motion. Compare/contrast the characteristics of the objects in the solar system.
