2 Sorptoeters PMI s BET-Sorptoeter is fully autoated, voluetric gas sorption analyzer to easure accurately adsorption and desorption isothers for the characterization of surface area, pore size distribution, pore volue and pore structure of icro and esoporous aterials as well as the kinetics of adsorption. Sorptoeters Principle When clean surface is exposed to a gas, an adsorbed fil fors on the surface. Adsorbed fils also for on the surface of pores within a aterial and vapor can condense in the pores. At a constant teperature, the aount of adsorbed/condensed gas on a surface depends on the pressure of the gas. Measureent of the aount of adsorption/condensation as a function of pressure can give inforation on the pore structure. The PMI Sorptoeters use gas adsorption/condensation to analyze pore characteristics. Further, easureent of pressure as a function of tie provides the kinetics inforation of adsorption. Adsorption & Desorption Isother Adsorption and desorption of gasses on saples can be accurately easured using our BET Sorptoeter. The user has independent control over the quantity and spacing of pressures used in both adsorption and desorption testing. Many different kinds of analyses are available to interpret data using the supplied report generation software. Fig.1 T - Plot Method - Micropore Volue Analysis

3 Physical Adsorption Weak van der Waal s type interaction of olecules with a pore surface leads to physical adsorption. The Brunauer, Eett and Teller (BET) theory of physical adsorption is norally used for analysis of adsorption data to copute surface area. P 1 C-1 P = Where: W = aount of adsorbed gas W = aount of gas adsorbed in a onolayer P = gas pressure P0 = equilibriu (saturation) vapor pressure at the test teperature C = diensionless constant that depends on the teperature and the gas/solid syste When vapor pressure, P is low copared with P0 (0.05 < P/P0 < 0.3), the plot of [P/W (P0 P)] verses [P/P0] is linear and the plot yields the agnitudes of C and W. The surface area S per unit ass,, of the saple is coputed using the cross-sectional area of the adsorbed gas olecule: S = W N a o Where: N o = Avogadro s nuber a = cross-sectional area of the adsorbed gas olecule W = aount of gas adsorbed in oles Fig.2 Adsorption and Desorption Isothers - Water Vapor at 0 C

4 Vapor Condensation As the relative vapor pressure (P/P0 ) increases, vapor eventually condenses in the pores utilizing the surface free energy available due to replaceent of the solid/vapor interface by solid/liquid interface. The aount of vapor condensed in pores gives the pore volue, and the Kelvin equation gives the pore diaeter. ( P ) In = - 4 γ V cos θ D R T Where: γ = surface tension of condensed liquid D = pore diaeter V= olar volue of condensed liquid R = gas constant θ = contact angle T = absolute test teperature Adsorbed layers of olecules for on the pore walls before condensation fills the pores. Therefore the actual pore diaeters are coputed by adding two ties the thickness of the adsorbed gas layer to D. A coplete adsorption isother is deterined by easuring the aount of vapor adsorbed as a function of increasing pressure. A desorption isother is deterined by easuring the aount of adsorption as a function of decreasing pressure. Based on this technique, characteristics of aterials related to adsorption, desorption, surface area and pore volue can be deterined. Pore Volue & Pore Diaeter Pore volue, pore diaeter and pore volue distribution can be deterined accurately by the PMI BET Sorptoeter. The distribution function is such that area under the function in any pore diaeter range is the volue of pore in that range. Fig.3 Pore Volue Distribution
