1 Overview of activities of the Task Group Waste and Radioecology (Activities before the meeting in Monaco) The Task Group was launched during the Workshop Mobility in Biosphere of Iodine, Technetium, Selenium and Uranium organized in April 2002 by the French National Radioactive Management Agency (Andra) and the International Union of Radioecologists (IUR). Part of the fees collected during this workshop were allocated to the group. The idea of the group was well received by the IUR members participating in the workshop, seventeen of which decided to join the group. There was consensus among the participants in the workshop in that the radioactive waste management problematic, and in particular the management of high level radioactive waste is one of the priority areas in radioecology. The objective of the group is to promote the cooperation between radioecologists working in the field of radioactive waste management. The group agreed that organizing workshops focused on the behaviour or key radionuclides, similar to the one organized in Nancy, would be a good working method.
2 The IUR Task Group Waste and Radioecology Coordinator: Rodolfo Avila Objectives The objective of the group is to promote cooperation among radioecologists working in the field of radioactive waste management with the focus on the following topics: Processes influencing the behaviour or radionuclides at the biosphere-geosphere interface and treatment of underground sources. Models of the long-term behaviour and accumulation of radionuclides in the environment. Gaps in knowledge and data concerning the environmental behaviour of some key radionuclides, such as Cl-36, I-129, Ni-59 (63), Tc-99, Se-79, actinides, etc. Strategies for assessment of the radiological impact of radionuclides released into the environment: deterministic versus probabilistic approaches. Action Plan and Schedule The following activities will be carried out during the first year: Creation of Newsletter of the Group Before December 2002 Set up an inventory of ongoing research activities in the field Before December 2002 Organise a first workshop to take place before April 2003 Prepare proceedings from the workshop Investigate possibilities to get financial support Before December 2002 Members The TG has currently 24 members listed in the table below

5 Set up an inventory of ongoing research activities in the field Before December 2002 Organise a first workshop to be held before April 2003 Prepare proceeding from the workshop Investigate possibilities for getting financial support Before December 2002 It was suggested and approved to organise a first scientific workshop dedicated to the behaviour of Cl-36 in the environment. The four topics mentioned above should be considered. Previous to the meeting a questionnaire will be circulated by Rodolfo Avila among the members of the group for finding out relevant ongoing and past research programmes. Brenda Howard from CEH in the UK offered to host the first scientific workshop. It was suggested to continue a close cooperation with the project BIOPROTA which is being started by initiative of several organisations including the IUR.
