Project Offerings (This list will be updated as additional project offerings become known/available) BEFORE beginning work in the lab and during the two terms of the project, all students MUST complete the following tasks: Attend all orientation sessions and workshops. Complete WHMIS training. Complete and submit to the Department Safety Officer, Kelly Sedore, the three required safety forms. Submit a literature review and research proposal. Receive training on the use of equipment and laboratory protocols. Meet with the research supervisor every two weeks to discuss progress and to evaluate the next step. It is the responsibility of the student to arrange this meeting. Discuss with the supervisor their experimental approach before work is done. Keep an up-to-date record in a hard cover notebook of all research activities including lab work, literature search, research meetings, etc.. Project Descriptions Dr. Brant Peppley: Kinetic Study of Methanol-Steam Reforming Reaction over Co-precipitated Catalyst Coatings 9-5

6 The motivation for this work is to develop a new method of coating catalyst onto a high heat transfer surface. The idea is to use heat exchanger equipment as a reactor vessel to reduce the number of components in a chemical process (also referred to as process intensification). Successful catalyst coatings used in heat exchangers could potentially reduce the capital cost of processes and permit the development of small-scale hydrogen generators for fuel cell electrical generators. The objective of this research project is to study the reaction kinetics and rate data of the methanol steam reforming reaction at varied feed compositions, feed flowrates, temperatures, and pressures. This study will be completed for both an alumina plate that has Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 spread evenly across it and an alumina plate that has the same catalyst generated/precipitated across it. The reaction kinetics over both forms of generated catalyst will be validated and compared with literature models to determine if the kinetics improve when the catalyst is generated directly on the alumina plate.
