Chapter 1. Coursebook 2
STANDARD INTERNATIONAL (SI) UNITS OF MEASUREMENT We use specific units to measure physical quantities. The Standard International (SI) System of units, was set up in France in Allows scientists all over the world to use the same units and therefore understand each other s results. Each unit has its own symbol. Their names can change form language to language but the symbols are standard. There are two kinds of units in the SI system: based units and derived units.
BASE UNITS IN THE SI SYSTEM
DERIVED UNITS Derived units are units that have been developed from other units. Example: the unit for AREA is the square metre (m2) derived from m x m.

THE METRIC SYSTEM Do we use always the same unit when measuring the lenght of any object? Depending on its size, we will use smaller or bigger units (mm, cm, km, etc) How do we convert units? We use the metric system, a set of standard units of measurment based on the number 10. That means it works in powers of cm is 10 times (bigger than) 1 mm.

Unit Litre Kilogram What we could measure The amount of petrol in a car tank The amount of air in a balloon The masses of portion of food, of a person Newton Volt The force on a spring The force needed to pull an object The amount of energy delivered by a battery Ampere Second Milligram the size of an electric current (the amount of electric charge that flows in an electric circuit each second) How long it takes to do a task How long a person takes to run 100m The masses of small objects or small amount of subtances Decametre The height of a chair, the length of a spring
Unit Kelvin What we could measure Temperature of an object Gram Masses of small ítems Metre The length of a room Candela Light intensity Square Centimetre The area of a small surface (a CD case) Kilometre Distances between towns or countries Cubic centimetre Volume (how much space something occupies)
Length Volume Mass Time Density
The length The base unit for length is the meter. The meter was originally defined as 1/10,000,000th of the distance from the North Pole to the Equator through Paris. The meter is now defined as the distance traveled by light in an absolute vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second (don t worry you don t have to remember this). To measure length we can use: A ruler, a meter stick, measuring tape Callipers or a Vernier ruler

The vernier ruler shows the measurement of the object you are gripping between the jaws.
Volume is the measurement of how much space an object occupies. Liquid volume is measured with a graduated cylinder. Solid volume can be calculated with a formula or by water displacement. The basic unit for volume in the metric system is the cubic metre. One liter sodas can be purchased at convenience stores. Graduated cylinder Water displacement Volume formula for a rectangular prism is length x width x height.

Drawing flow-diagrams showing how to measure the mass of a liquid or the volumen of an irregular shaped object. Describe how to calculate the density of objects or calculate it using the data I give you in a problema applying the formula.
