Future developments 20/11/2016 European Cool Roofs Council 36
Deterioration of cool roofs Ageing Weathering + Soiling WEATHERING UV (mostly) and visible radiation Thermal cycling Moisture Degradation SOILING Dry and wet deposition of atmospheric aerosols and suspended dust Microbiological growth 20/11/2016 European Cool Roofs Council 37
Deterioration of cool roofs Initial condition Condition after 2.5 natural month of exposure Condition after 2.5 month of natural exposure Initial condition Aging can alter the radiative properties of roofing materials. Products suffer significant loss of SR, especially those with high initial solar reflectance while products with very low initial solar reflectance (SRin<0.2) tend to become more reflective as they age Significant differences among product types & different climatic conditions 20/11/2016 European Cool Roofs Council 38
Deterioration of cool roofs (Sleiman et al. 2011, Solar Energy Materials & Solar Cells) For roof products with high initial solar reflectance, ageing might yield to a mean absolute loss of about 0.16 after three years of natural exposure at low or moderately polluted non-urban or suburban sites, In European metropolitan areas the mean absolute loss of solar reflectance of highly reflective materials after at least 2 years of natural exposure ranges from 0.14 to /11/2016 European Cool Roofs Council 39
Deterioration of cool roofs Ageing significantly affects the performance of cool roofs by increasing the roof surface temperature and by reducing the cooling load savings by an average 20-30%. Aged cool roof product rating is critical. 20/11/2016 European Cool Roofs Council 40
ORNL ATLAS Ageing assessment Natural weathering: exposing samples to outdoor ambient conditions (direct sunlight and other elements of weather) at exposure sites (weathering farms) with different climatic conditions -ASTM G7, ISO 877, ISO 2810 etc. 3 year exposure 20/11/2016 European Cool Roofs Council 41
Q-Lab Ageing assessment Artificial weathering: Artificial weathering: accelerated degradation and studying the material s behavior under controlled environmental conditions in the lab and in a reasonably fast time. They consist of light sources e.g. UV lamps or filtered xenon arc lamp to simulate the effect of sunlight. T monitoring and control is performed by a black panel T sensor which controls the specimen s surface T and simultaneously by the chamber air T control to give the ultimate determination of the specimen temperature. The effects of outdoor moisture are simulated by direct, pure water spray and by relative humidity control -ISO11341, ASTM G 155 Soiling not taken into account 20/11/2016 European Cool Roofs Council 42
Ageing assessment LBNL Laboratory Aging Protocol : an accelerated aging method that incorporates features of soiling and weathering. The method sprays a calibrated aqueous soiling mixture onto preconditioned coupons of roofing materials, and then exposes the soiled coupons to UV radiation, heat and water in a commercial weatherometer. It reproduces the three-year aged values of solar reflectance (M. Sleiman, et al., 2014) A variant of the LBNL protocol was tested to reproduce the aging conditions in Italian urban areas, for roofing membranes, clay tiles, and façade finish coats with promising results (Paolini et al, 2014) -ASTM D : Standard Practice for Laboratory Soiling and Weathering of Roofing Materials to Simulate Effects of Natural Exposure on Solar Reflectance and Thermal Emittance 20/11/2016 European Cool Roofs Council 43
Future developments Taking into account that in order to assess a cool roof product s long-term performance it is necessary to measure the aged product s radiative values, the ECRC is currently actively working towards adopting a system for the rating of aged products. Integration of natural weathering in the ECRC product rating program Collaboration with LBNL in testing the applicability and adapting the accelerated aging protocol to European conditions 20/11/2016 European Cool Roofs Council 44
