Co-requisite: Chem 205, Accelerated Chemistry Lab II. No credit will be given for both Chem 104 and Chem 204. Things You Need to Get: "Chemical Principles: the Quest for Insight, " 5 th edition, by Atkins and Jones; a scientific calculator. How the Course Works: CJM will lecture three times a week (see above for time and place) and will go over the concepts of chemistry, work out some problems, and give you "The Big Picture" of what's going on in chemistry and why it's so fascinating. Anything said in lecture can be used as an exam question, even if it is not in the book. Homework is assigned every day at the end of

2 lecture, and will be due at the beginning of the next lecture. Homework problems are quantized: zero or one point per problem, unless the instructor says differently. NO LATE HOMEWORKS WILL BE ACCEPTED and that includes turning in homework later in the class period (in the event that we go over solutions in class). Every once in a while, I might assign an in-class homework problem that will have to be turned in at the end of the period. In the discussion/quiz section, you will be in a smaller classroom with ~20 other people from our lecture. In the discussion/quiz section, your TA will go over problems in more depth and give a short quiz. There will be an average of one quiz per week, except during exam weeks. There will be four hour exams, which can be cumulative, and a cumulative final exam. For exams, bring pencils/pens, a calculator, and your ID card. Rooms will be announced later. If you already know you have a conflict, we have conflict exam times the same days, 4:30-6:30 pm. You must get CJM s approval at least one week in advance to take a conflict exam, and then sign up for the conflict exam on the bullet board outside of 101 Chem Annex. The Final Exam time is set by the University: 8:00am-11:00 am, Friday, May 16. Again, rooms will be announced later. Grading: All points will be added up at the end of the course. Homework: 100 points Quizzes: 100 points (lowest score dropped) 4 hour exams: 400 points (100 points each) Final Exam: 200 points 800 points maximum. Straight scale based on points earned: points: A points: A points: A points: B points: B points: B points: C points: C points: C points: D points: D points: D- 369 and below: F No make-up exams or quizzes will be given, beyond the conflict exams. If you miss an exam and its conflict exam, the % score on the Final Exam will replace the missed exam. If you miss a second (or third) exam, you will get a zero for it: in other words, the Final Exam score will only replace one missed exam, not two or more missed exams. Other Policies: No cheating. No lying. No plagiarism. No cell phone calls in class. No earphones plugged into your ears in lab, lecture, or during an exam. Wear goggles and closed shoes in lab. In case of emergency, follow your instructor to the basement (tornado) or out to the Quad (fire).
