Belle II will study e + e collisions at or near the ϒS) resonance with the goal of collecting 50 ab 1 of data, which is a large increase over that recorded by the Belle and BaBar exeriments. This data will rovide a large samle of charm meson decays. In this reort we resent the exected sensitivity of Belle II for measuring time-deendent mixing and CP violation in the D 0 -D 0 system. We focus on measurements of D 0 K + π, D 0 K + π π 0, and D 0 K 0 S π+ π decays. 9th International Worksho on the CKM Unitarity Triangle 8 November - 3 December 016 Tata Institute for Fundamental Research TIFR), Mumbai, India Seaker. 2 1. Introduction The Belle exeriment at the KEK laboratory in Jaan is now being ugraded to the Belle II exeriment. The goal of Belle II is to collect a data set corresonding to 50 times what Belle obtained. The exeriment is designed to search for new hysics in B and D meson decays, and in τ leton decays. Within this broad hysics rogram, measuring mixing and CP violation in the neutral charm system is an imortant goal. The first evidence for D 0 -D 0 mixing was obtained in 007 by the Belle [1] and BaBar [] exeriments, with subseuent observations made by LHCb [3] and CDF []. However, the current recision on the mixing arameters x = m/γ and y = Γ/Γ), where m and Γ are the differences in masses and decay widths between the two mass eigenstates and Γ is the mean decay width, is insufficient to determine whether y > x or even whether x 0 [5]. To establish this, higher statistics measurements are needed. CP violation in the D 0 -D 0 system has not yet been observed. The redicted rate within the Standard Model SM) is very small, and an observation of CP violation by Belle II could indicate new hysics. There are several advantages of erforming these measurements at an e + e exeriment such as Belle II rather than at a hadron machine: lower backgrounds, higher trigger efficiency, excellent γ and π 0 reconstruction and thus η, η, and ρ + reconstruction), high flavor-tagging efficiency with low dilution, and numerous control samles with which to study systematics. In this reort we resent Belle II rosects for measuring the mixing arameters x and y, and CP-violating arameters / and Arg/) = φ, where and are the comlex coefficients relating the D 0 -D 0 flavor eigenstates with the mass eigenstates. We focus on three benchmark decay modes: D 0 K + π, D 0 K + π π 0, and D 0 K 0 S π+ π [6]. In all cases the flavor of the neutral D is determined by reuiring that it originate from a D + D 0 π + or D D 0 π decay; the charge of the π ± identifies the D 0 or D 0 flavor. All results given are reliminary.. Decay-time resolution Measurements of time-deendent mixing and CP violation deend on measuring decay times recisely. Due to an imroved vertex detector, the decay time resolution of Belle II should be suerior to that of Belle and BaBar. Whereas Belle used a four-layer silicon-stri detector, Belle II will use four layers of silicon lus two layers of silicon ixels, as shown in Fig. 1. Some arameters of the vertex detector are listed in Table 1. The ixel layers will lie only 1 mm and mm from the interaction oint IP), and the smallest ixel size will be µm. Figure left) shows the resolution on the imact arameter of tracks with resect to the IP as a function of track momentum, as obtained from Monte Carlo MC) simulation. Also shown are corresonding results from BaBar. The figure indicates that the Belle II resolution will be aroximately half that of BaBar. Figure right) lots the residuals of decay time for a large samle of MC D + D 0 π +, D 0 K + K decays. The RMS of this distribution is 10 fs, which is almost half the decay time resolution of BaBar 70 fs). Similar results have been obtained for romt D 0 K + K decays, and also for D 0 π + π decays. 3. Mixing and CP violation in D 0 K + π To study the sensitivity of Belle II to arameters x, y, /, and φ in wrong-sign D 0 1

K + π decays, we erform a toy MC study as follows. We generate an ensemble of 1000 MC exeriments, with each exeriment consisting of a samle of D0 decays and a searate samle of D 0 decays. The number of events in each samle corresonds to 5 ab 1, 0 ab 1, and 50 ab 1 of data. For the full dataset 50 ab 1 ), there are a total of D K ± π decays. The decay times are obtained by samling from the following robability density functions PDFs): ) 0 0 dn 0 x + y D ) = e Γt RD + RD y0 cos φ x0 sin φ )Γt) + Γt) 3.1) dt ) dn 0 x0 + y0 Γt 0 0 D ) = e RD + RD y cos φ + x sin φ )Γt) + Γt), 3.) dt where x0 = x cos δ + y sin δ, y0 = x sin δ + y cos δ, and δ is the strong hase difference between D0 K π + and D 0 K π + amlitudes. This strong hase difference can be measured at BESIII using CP-tagged DCP K π + decays [7]. The arameter RD RD ) is the ratio of amlitudes suared A D0 K + π )/A D0 K π + ) A D 0 K π + )/A D 0 K + π ) ). After generation, the decay times are smeared by the exected decay time resolution of 10 fs, and the resulting D0 and D 0 time distributions are simultaneously fitted. Backgrounds are not yet included in this study; a first look at backgrounds indicates that when they are included, the fitted errors increase by only a small amount. The PDFs used for the fit are the convolution of Es. 3.1) and 3.) with a Gaussian resolution function; this results in roducts of exonential functions and

Mixing in D 0 K + π π 0 We study mixing in D 0 K + π π 0 decays using an MC simulation based on EVTGEN [8]. For this study we generate an ensemble of 10 exeriments, with each exeriment consisting of 5000 D 0 K + π π 0 decays corresonding to 50 ab 1 of Belle II data. The generated decay times are smeared by a resolution of 10 fs, and the decay model used to generate and fit the Dalitz lot is the isobar model used by BaBar [9]. Possible CP violation and backgrounds are neglected in this hase of the study. More details are given in Ref. [10]. The mixing arameters are x = xcosδ Kππ + ysinδ Kππ and y = xsinδ Kππ + ycosδ Kππ, where δ Kππ is the strong hase difference between D 0 K π + π 0 and D 0 K π + π 0 amlitudes evaluated at m ππ = M ρ. For this study the strong hase δ Kππ is fixed to 10, and the fitted arameters are x and y. The results are shown in Fig. 3. The inut values are x = and y = , and the RMS of the distributions of residuals are δx = 0.057% and δy = 0.09%. This recision is aroximately one order of magnitude better than that achieved by BaBar [9]. The rojections of a tyical fit one exeriment in the ensemble) are shown in Fig.. In ractice, to extract values for 3
5 x and y reuires knowledge of the strong hase δ Kππ ; this can in rincile be measured at BESIII using CP-tagged D CP K π + π 0 decays. Figure 3: Left: reliminary results of fitting an ensemble of 10 exeriments, with each exeriment corresonding to 50 ab 1 of data [10]. Middle and right: rojections of the left-most lot. The RMS values of these distributions are δ x = 0.057% and δ y = 0.09%. Figure : Projections of the fit to D 0 K + π π 0 events for one tyical exeriment in the ensemble [10]. 5. Mixing and CP violation in D 0 K S 0 π+ π Another method for measuring mixing and CP violation is by fitting the time-deendent Dalitz lot for D 0 KS 0π+ π decays. One calculates the observables m + PK 0 S + P π +) and m PK 0 S + P π ) and erforms an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to m +, m, and the decay time t. To fit for CP-violating arameters / and φ in addition to x and y) reuires dividing the data samle into D 0 and D 0 decays and fitting the two subsamles simultaneously. The time-deendent PDFs are { dn dt D0 ) = e Γt A f + A f )coshyt) + A f A f )cosxt) ) ) } + Re A f A f sinhyt) Im A f A f sinxt) 5.1) { dn dt D0 ) = e Γt A f + A f )coshyt) + A f A f )cosxt) ) ) } + Re A f A f sinhyt) Im A f A f sinxt), 5.)
6 where A f A f ) is the decay amlitude for D 0 f D 0 f ) decays. These amlitudes must be modeled, and the arameters of the model must also be fitted or else taken from a revious measurement. For a Belle analysis of D 0 KS 0π+ π decays using 976 fb 1 of data [11], the decay model used consisted of 1 intermediate resonances modeled by isobars, lus Kπ and ππ S-waves. The magnitudes and hases of the isobars, and arameters of the S-waves, were obtained from a searate time-indeendent fit to the data. An imortant advantage of this measurement is that the fitted PDFs Es. 5.1 and 5.) deend on x and y without being rotated by an unknown strong hase difference. The results obtained by Belle [11] are listed in Table 3 along with the recision estimated for Belle II. This recision is obtained as follows. The statistical errors of the Belle measurement σ stat ) are scaled by the suare root of the ratio of luminosities. The systematic errors are divided into two categories: reducible errors σ syst ) that should decrease with luminosity such as errors due to background modeling as determined from control samles; and irreducible errors σ irred ) that do not decrease with more data such as uncertainty in decay time resolution due to detector misalignment. The total error is calculated as σ Belle II = σstat + σsyst) L Belle /50 ab 1 ) + σirred. These errors are conservative, as the simle scaling used does not account for the imroved decay time resolution of the Belle II vertex detector as comared to that of Belle see Section ). σx) σy) σ σφ) 10 ) 10 ) ) Belle σ stat Belle σ syst Belle σ irred Belle II σ tot Table 3: Precision obtained for x, y, /, and φ from a Belle analysis of D 0 K 0 S π+ π decays [11], and the recision exected for Belle II as obtained by scaling the Belle errors see text).
