Box 111, Cincinnati, Ohio 451 USA We present measurements of asymmetries in D decays performed by the Belle experiment running at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + e collider. PRESENTED AT The 6 th International Workshop on Charm Physics (CHARM 13) Manchester, UK, 31 August 4 September, 13
2 1 Introduction Thephenomenon of violation(v) iswell-established inthe K -K andb -B systems [1, ]. The rate observed confirms the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) theory of quark flavor mixing [3]. The CKM theory predicts only tiny V in the D -D system [4], and to-date such V has not been observed. Both timeindependent and time-dependent measurements of partial widths can exhibit asymmetries. The former results mainly from interference between two decay amplitudes with different weak phases; this is called direct V. The latter results from either unequal rates of flavor mixing (called indirect V) or interference between a mixed and an unmixed decay amplitude. In all cases new physics can increase the rate of V significantly above that predicted by the CKM theory [4]. Here we present results from searches for V in D decays from the Belle experiment. For a review of mixing and V formalism, see Ref. [5]. Time-dependent D (t) K + K /π + π The Belle experiment has measured the mixing parameter y and the -violating parameter A Γ using 977 fb 1 of data [6]. Both observables depend on mixing parameters x and y and V parameters q/p and φ. To lowest order the relations are y = ( q/p + p/q ) A Γ = ( q/p p/q ) ycosφ ( q/p p/q ) xsinφ (1) ycosφ ( q/p + p/q ) xsinφ () The parameters are determined by measuring lifetimes of D and D mesons to flavor-specific and -specific final states, e.g., y = τ(k π + ) 1 τ(k + K ) (3) A Γ = τ(d K + K ) τ(d K + K ) τ(d K + K )+τ(d K + K ). (4) The latter measurement requires tagging the flavor of the decaying D meson, and this is done by reconstructing D + D π + and D D π decays, i.e., the charge of the accompanying π ± (which has low momentum and is often called the slow pion ) identifies the D flavor. Both K + K and π + π final states are used by Belle, and the fitted lifetime distributions are shown in Fig. 1. The precision of the measurement depends upon good understanding of the decay time resolution of the detector. For Belle, the resolution function depends upon θ, the polar angle with respect to the e +
3 beam of the D in the e + e center-of-mass (CM) frame. Thus the ratios in Eqs. (3) and (4) are measured in bins of cosθ. The resolution function also depends on the detector configuration: for the first 153 fb 1 of data a 3-layer silicon vertex detector (SVD) was used, while for the remaining data a 4-layer SVD was used. These running periods ( SVD1 and SVD ) are treated separately. The results for SVD data are plotted in Fig.. Fitting both SVD1 and SVD values to constants gives y = (+1.11±.±.11)% (5) A Γ = (.3±.±.8)%. (6) As a test of the resolution function, the absolute lifetime for D K π + [7] decays is also measured. The result is 48.5 ±.5 fs, which is consistent with the world average [8] χ /ndf= 79.9/684 (CL=.%) KK (+) KK (-) Kπ ππ (+) ππ (-) t (bins) Figure 1: Decay time distributions for D K + K /π + π, D K + K /π + π, and D K π +. Fitting these distributions yields y and A Γ via Eqs. (3) and (4). The shaded histograms show background contributions; the lower plots show the fit residuals. 3 Time-integrated D K + K /π + π The D K + K /π + π samples used previously can be integrated over all decay times to measure the asymmetry A f, defined as A f Γ(D f) Γ(D f) Γ(D f)+γ(d f). (7) This parameter is a difference in partial widths rather than a difference in lifetimes and thus depends strongly on the specific final state. In addition to the underlying asymmetry, there is a forward-backward asymmetry (A FB ) in D /D production 3
4 / 17 y =1.6±.3 % y vs. cos θ * A Γ vs. cos θ *.9 / 17 A Γ =-.3±.1 % τ vs. cos θ * / 17 τ= 48.±.6 fs Figure : Fitted values of y, A Γ, and τ D for SVD data in 18 bins of cosθ (see text). Fitting these points to constants yields the overall values listed due to γ-z electroweak interference and higher order QED effects in e + e cc; and there is an asymmetry A π ε in the reconstruction of π ± s from D ± Dπ ± s decays used to tag the D flavor. The reconstructed asymmetry one measures is the sum of all three: A f recon = Af +A FB +Aπ ε. Belle has measured Af recon for D K + K /π + π decays using 977 fb 1 of data [9] to determine A KK and A ππ. To correct for A π ε, Belle measures Af recon for flavor-tagged and untagged D K π + decays. These decays have an additional asymmetry due to differences in the reconstruction efficiency of K π + versus K + π ; this difference is denoted A Kπ ε. Thus A Kπ tagged = A Kπ +A FB +A Kπ ε +A π ε (8) A Kπ untagged = A Kπ +A FB +AKπ ε, (9) and taking the difference A Kπ tagged AKπ untagged yields Aπ ε. In practice this is done by re-weighting events: A Kπ tagged is calculated by weighting D decays by a factor 1 A Kπ untagged (p D,cosθ D ) and weighting D decays by a factor 1+A Kπ untagged (p,cosθ D D ), where p D and θ D are the momentum and polar angle with respect to the e + beam of the D. The resulting A Kπ tagged equals A π ε. The signal asymmetry A f recon is then calculated by weighting D decays by a factor 1 A π ε (p π,cosθ π ) and D decays by a factor 1+A π ε(p π,cosθ π ). The asymmetry A π ε is calculated in bins of p π and θ π to reduce systematic errors. The result equals A f +A FB. Since A FB is an odd function of cosθ, where θ is the polar angle of the D in the CM frame, and A f is nominally an even function of θ, the individual asymmetries are extracted via A f = Af,corr recon (cosθ ) + A f,corr recon ( cosθ ) (1) A FB = Af,corr recon(cosθ ) A f,corr recon( cosθ ). (11) 4
5 The results of Eq. (1) for K + K and π + π final states are plotted in Fig. 3 for each bin of cosθ. Fitting these values to constants yields A KK = (.3±.1±.9)% (1) A ππ = (+.55±.36±.9)%, (13) and A A KK A ππ = (.87±.41±.6)%. Fitting these values to constants yields the results listed in Eqs. (1) and (13). 4 Direct V in Neutral D Decays The above measurements of A Γ, A KK, and A ππ are sensitive to underlying parameters [4] a indir = ( q/p + p/q ) xsinφ ( q/p p/q ) ycosφ (14) A = sinφ sin(δ δ), (15) A a dir where A A(D h + h ), A A(D h + h ), and δ(δ) is the strong phase for amplitude A(A). Parameters a indir and a dir parameterize the amounts of indirect and direct violation in D decays, respectively. Since D decays are well-dominated by tree amplitudes, the phase φ Arg[(q/p)(A/A)] Arg(q/p) is universal, i.e., commontoalld decay modes. FromEq. (14)thisimplies thata indir is also universal. On the other hand, a dir depends on the final state. The relations between the observables and parameters are, to subleading order [1], A Γ a indir adir ycosφ (16) 5
6 A hh a dir A t Γ τ, (17) where t is the mean decay time for D h + h and τ is the D lifetime. The second term in Eq. (16) is the subleading contribution compare to Eq. (). It is O(1 4 ) or smaller and usually neglected; i.e., A Γ a indir and is considered universal. Inserting Eq. (16) into Eq. (17) gives A hh = a dir t +aindir τ +adir ycosφ t τ. (18) Experimentally, many systematic errors cancel when measuring the difference A A KK Aππ. Using Eq. (18) to calculate this difference, one obtains ( ) A = a dir t +aindir KK dir t KK ππ dir t ππ + a a ycosφ (19) τ τ τ = a dir a dir ( 1+ycosφ t ) τ ( 1+ycosφ t ) τ + ( a indir +adir ycosφ ) t τ +a indir t τ (), (1) where a dir KK dir ππ dir a a, a dir ( ) KK dir ππ dir a +a /, t t KK t ππ, and t ( ) t KK + t ππ /. Using Eq. (1) and AΓ = a indir, one can fit the measuredvaluesofa Γ and A forparametersa dir anda indir. Adeviationfromzero of either of these parameters would indicate V in D decays. Such an observation would hint at new physics. To perform this fit requires knowledge of t, t, and ycosφ. The Heavy Flavor Averaging Group (HFAG) [11] performs this fit for all available data: Belle, BaBar, CDF, and LHCb measurements. They use values of t and t specific to each experiment, and y cos φ is calculated using world average values [1]. The resulting fit is shown in Fig. 4, which plots all relevant measurements in the two-dimensional a dir -a indir plane. The most likely values and ±1σ errors are [13] Whereas a indir a indir = (+.15±.5)% () a dir = (.333±.1)%. The p-value of 5 Direct V in D + K S K+ The decay D + K SK + is self-tagging, there is no D ± Dπ ± decay, and thus there is no correction for A π ε. However, the final state K± introduces a correction (A K+ ε ) 6

The cross denotes the fitted central value, and the ellipses denote 1σ, σ, and 3σ confidence regions. due to possible differences in K + and K reconstruction efficiencies. In addition, as the neutral K or K is reconstructed via KS π+ π decay, there is an asymmetry (A K ) due to the small difference in rates between K KS and K KS, or equivalently between K π + π and K π + π [14]. Thus: A K SK + recon = A K K + +A K +A FB +AK+ ε. Belle has measured A K SK + recon using 977 fb 1 of data [15] to determine A K K +. To determine A K+ ε, Belle measures the asymmetries for untagged samples of D K π + and D s + φπ + decays. These asymmetries have the following components: A K π + recon = A FB +A π+ ε A K+ ε (4) A φπ+ recon = A FB +A π+ ε. (5) To isolate A K+ ε, the weighting procedure performed for time-integrated D K + K decays (see Section 3) is repeated here: D K π + decays are weighted by a factor ). With this weighting the asymmetry A K π + recon is calculated; the result equals A K+ ε. This procedure is then repeated for the signal sample: D + KS K+ decays are weighted by a factor (1 A K+ ε ), and D KS K decays are weighted by a factor (1+A K+ ε ). The resulting A K SK + recon equals A K K + +A K +A FB. Since the sum A K K + +A K is an even function of cosθ (θ is the polar angle with respect to the e + beam of the D + in (1 A φπ+ recon ), and D K + π decays are weighted by a factor (1 + A φπ+ recon 7
8 the e + e CM frame), and A FB is an odd function, the two types of asymmetries are separated by taking sums and differences as done in Eqs. (1) and (11). The results are plotted in Fig. 5 in bins of cosθ ; fitting these values to a constant yields To extract A K K + from A K K + Ref. [14]. The result is which is consistent with zero. A K K + +A K = (.5±.8±.14)%. (6) +A K, one corrects for AK using the calculation of A K K + = (+.8±.8±.14)%, (7) & $ # %!$ # '!" & )&*&, ( )&*&+ &*&, & # ' 45 ( )&*&, )&*&+ )&*&6 &.*/** -.1" &* # - 3 Figure 5: A K SK + = A K K + + A K (top) and A FB (bottom) measured from D± K SK ± decays [15]. ' 6 Direct V in D + K S π+ The decay D + KS π+ is similar to D + KS K+ in that it is also self-tagging and thus has no correction for D ± Dπ ±. However, the final state π + introduces a correction A π+ ε due to possible differences between π + and π reconstruction efficiencies. The asymmetry A K is also present and must be corrected for as done for D + KS K+ decays. Thus: A K Sπ + recon = A K π + +A K +A FB +Aπ+ ε. (8) Belle has measured A K Sπ + recon using 977 fb 1 of data [16] to determine A K π +. 8
9 To determine A π+ ε, Belle measures the asymmetries for untagged samples of threebody D + K π + π + and D K π + π decays. These asymmetries have the following components: A K π + π + recon = A FB +A K π + ε +A π+ ε (9) A K π + π recon = A FB +A K π + ε. (3) To isolate A π+ ε, the weighting procedure done for time-integrated D K + K decays (Section 3) and D + KSK + decays (Section 5) is repeated again: D + K π + π + decays are weighted by a factor (1 A K π + π recon ), and D K + π π decays are weighted by a factor (1+A K π + π recon ). The resulting asymmetry A K π + π + recon equals A π+ ε. The weighting procedure is then repeated for the signal sample: D + KS π+ decays are weighted by a factor (1 A π+ ε ), and D KS π decays are weighted by a factor (1 + A π+ ε ). The resulting A K Sπ + recon equals A K π + + A K + A FB. Taking sums and differences in bins of cosθ as done in Eqs. (1) and (11) isolates A K π + +A K. The results are plotted in Fig. 6; fitting these values to a constant yields A K π + +A K = (.363±.94±.67)%. (31) To extract A K π +, one applies a correction for A K [14]. The result is A K π + = (.4±.94±.67)%. (3) The statistics of this measurement are high enough to observe the asymmetry due to A K with a significance of 3.σ. However, after correcting for AK the result for is consistent with zero. A K π + 7 Other Searches for Direct V In addition to the searches described above, there have been numerous other searches for direct V in D decays at Belle. A complete listing of these searches and their results is given in Table 1. In all cases there is no evidence for direct V. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS We are thankful to the organizers of CHARM 13 for a fruitful and enjoyable workshop. 9
