Two species in Hymenochaetaceae (Basidiomycota) new to China YUAN Hai-Sheng DAI Yu-Cheng * Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenyang , China 1 INTRODUCTION Wood-inhabiting fungi from northern China were investigated extensively during last ten years, and the species in the area are relatively well known (Dai 2000; Dai et al. 2006, 2007; Wei et al. 2005; Yuan et al. 2006). However, they are scantily reported in tropical forests of China (Dai et al. 2001, 2002, 2004). By the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, two field investigations were made in Jianfengling and Bawangling Nature Reserve of Hainan Province in Two species of wood-rotting fungi, Inonotus perchocolatus and Phellinus glaucescens, were identified during the studies of the collections from Hainan Province. They belong to the Hymenochaetaceae (Aphyllophorales), and were not previously recorded from China (Zhang & Dai 2005; Dai & Niemelä 2006). The studied specimens are deposited at the herbarium of the Institute of Applied Ecology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IFP). The microscopic methods employed here is same as that described by Dai et al. (2006). Special colour terms follow Peterson (1996). 2 DESCRIPTIONS Inonotus perchocolatus Corner, Nova Hedwigia, Beih. 101: 123, 1991 Fig. 1 Fruitbody Basidiocarps annual, resupinate, tightly adnate, corky and without odour or taste when fresh, becoming woody hard up on drying, up to 10cm long, 5cm wide and 0.5mm thick; sterile margin thin, narrow, brown. Pore surface clay buff to drab colour, umber when bruised, slightly Supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of P.R. 2 152 Mycosystema glancing; pores round to angular, 9-10 per mm; dissepiments thin, entire. Context umber colour, very thin to almost lacking; tubes concolorous with pore surface, rigid when dry, up to 0.5mm long. Hyphal structure Hyphal system monomitic; generative hyphae bearing simple septa, IKI-, CB-; tissues darkening in KOH. Subiculum Generative hyphae yellowish to pale brownish, slightly thick- to thick-walled, occasionally branched, straight to flexuous, interwoven, strongly agglutinated, µm diam. Tubes Generative hyphae hyaline to pale yellowish, thin- to thick-walled, rarely branched, 2-3.8µm diam. Cystidia and cystidioles absent; two kind of setae present: hymenial setae subulate to ventricose, acute, dark reddish brown, thick walled to subsolid, µm; hyphoid setae embedded in hymenium, acute, dark reddish brown, thick-walled, up to µm; basidia short clavate to barrel-shaped, with a simple septum and four sterigmata, µm; basidioles subglobose to short clavate, slightly smaller than basidia. Spores Basidiospores ellipsoid to subglobose, hyaline, thin-walled, smooth, IKI-, CB-, µm, L =4.46µm, W =3.76µm, Q =1.19(n=13/1). Specimen examined China. Hainan Prov., Dongfang County, Jianfengling Nature Reserve, on fallen angiosperm trunk, 4.IX.2006 Dai Remarks Inonotus chihshanyenus T.T. Chang & W.N. Chou, I. glomeratus (Peck) Murrill, I. micantissimus (Rick) Rajchenb. and I. perchocolatus share resupinate basidiocarps with both hymenial setae and hyphoid setae. However, pores of Inonotus chihshanyenus are large and irregular to daedaleoid (1-3per mm, Chang & Zhou 1998). Inonotus micantissimus has large and thick-walled basidiospores ( µm, Ryvarden 2005). Inonotus glomeratus has large pores (3-5 per mm), and thick-walled basidiospores ( µm) (Ryvarden 2005). The basidiospores of Inonotus perchocolatus in the Chinese collection are slightly smaller than those in its original report from Singapore (Corner 1991), but all other characters fit the species well. Because we have only sole collection, and for the time being we treat the Chinese specimen as Inonotus perchocolatus. Phellinus glaucescens (Petch) Ryvarden, Norweg. J. Bot. 19: 234, 1972 Fig. 2 Poria glaucescens Petch, Ann. R. Bot. Gdns Peradeniya 6: 139, 1916 Fruitbody Basidiocarps annual, resupinate, adnate, leathery and without odour or taste when fresh, becoming woody hard and light in weight up on drying, up to 20cm long, 10cm wide and 0.2cm thick; margin thin, narrow, rusty brown. Pore surface yellowish brown to dark brown, glancing, cracked when dry; pores round to angular, 8-9 per mm; dissepiments thin, entire. Context dark brown, coriaceous, up to 0.3mm thick; tubes concolorous with pore surface, rigid when dry, up to 2mm long. Hyphal structure Hyphal system dimitic; generative hyphae simple septate; skeletal hyphae dominant, IKI-, CB-, tissues darkening in KOH. Tubes Generative hyphae hyaline, thin- to slightly thick-walled, occasionally branched, 2-2.8µm diam.; skeletal hyphae thick-walled with a narrow lumen, unbranched, µm diam. Cystidia and cystidioles absent; setae frequent, ventricose to subulate, acute, dark reddish brown, thick-walled to subsolid, µm; basidia subglobose to barrel-shaped, with a simple septum and four sterigmata, µm; basidioles mostly subglobose, slightly smaller than basidia. Hainan Prov., Changjiang County, Bawangling Nature Reserve, on fallen angiosperm branch, 3.IX.2006 Dai Remarks Phellinus laevigatus (Fr.) Bourdot & Galzin is very similar to Phellinus glaucescens, but it has hyaline basidiospores, and grows exclusively on Betula in temperate or boreal forests.
