SURFICIAL MAPPING STATUS (1:24,000 scale quadrangles) completed (Aug.-2018) current (Sept-2018) NE Illinois Project: Tinley Park Palos Park Monticello S Illinois Project: Beaver Creek Pleasant Mound Lawrenceville
SURFICIAL MAPPING STATUS PROPOSED Quadrangles for FY 2019 N Illinois Project: Blue Island Harvey Steger (north half) S Illinois Project: Crossville New Harmony Williamson Co. surficial & bedrock compilations
Northeastern Illinois Surficial Mapping Project Project Leaders: Brandon Curry Olivier Caron (Blue Island, Harvey, and Steger) Wisconsin Episode landscapes, with complex subsurface Quaternary geologic framework resulting from multiple glaciations Blue Island and Harvey Quadrangles will move our mapping program into the densely populated, flood prone areas in glacial Lake Chicago, southern Cook County; [building off mapping in western Cook Co.] mapping the northern Steger Quadrangle provide connection to prior mapping in Will County
Blue Island, Harvey, and Steger Quadrangles Regional Context mapped: STATEMAP program Bretz maps (early 20 th century) Chicago builds on NE Illinois mapping mapped by Bretz (early 20 th century), but needs to be updated and has no 3D component or cross section history of Chicago outlet; glacial Lake Chicago plain geologic substrate beneath Valparaiso Morainic System, Tinley Moraine, and Blue Island (moraine remnant)
Blue Island, Harvey, and Steger Quadrangles Geomorphology Glacial Lake Chicago Project area: Green infrastructure study Calumet Shoreline Valparaiso Morainic System Glenwood Shoreline transition from glaciated uplands to lacustrine plain of glacial Lake Chicago
Blue Island, Harvey and Steger Quadrangles Justification Societal Relevance Groundwater: important aquifers within tongues of the Henry Fm. (between till units); connectivity of subsurface aquifers with surface hydrology Wetlands: wetland ecosystems and restoration Flooding problems / green infrastructure siting: related to funded Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant project top address flooding issues in glacial Lake Chicago (southern Cook Co.) Construction suitability: various engineering projects; important in this urbanized area Sand and gravel / dolomite resources: Silurian bedrock is near-surface (< 10 feet) in several areas locally; Thornton Quarry partially located in Harvey Quadrangle Research Geochronology of the Valparaiso Morainic System and Tinley Moraine; how are older till units distributed beneath moraines; geometry of diamicton units with onlapping lacustrine units History of the Chicago Outlet and glacial Lake Chicago during the Glenwood and Calumet Phases
Southern Illinois Surficial Mapping Project Illinois Episode landscape, with superimposed proglacial Wisconsin Episode glaciofluvial and eolian deposits Crossville-New Harmony continuing in the Wabash Valley to connect areas of prior mapping
Southern Illinois Seismic Hazards Wabash Valley Seismic Zone New Madrid Seismic Zone Seismic risk classified as Annualized Earthquake Loss in dollars per million people, by county. Redrawn from FEMA (2008).
Crossville and New Harmony Quadrangles Setting EDWARDS Grayville Project Leader: Andrew Phillips slackwater terraces WHITE Crossville New Harmony dune fields bedrock highlands deltaic plug Maunie Emma
Geomorphic Setting Crossville New Harmony bedrock uplands slackwater lake terraces bedrock uplands (thin drift) IL IN dune fields liquefaction features observed
Crossville and New Harmony Quadrangles Justification Societal Relevance groundwater supply & quality seismic hazards (liquefaction, ground shaking) connects gap in prior mapping (Grayville Maunie) Research confluence region of Little Wabash and Wabash Valleys slackwater lake deposits and deglacial flood events WHITE EDWARDS Crossville Maunie Emma Grayville New Harmony
Williamson County Compilation (Surficial and Bedrock) 6 surficial maps authored by Leon Follmer and John Nelson (ISGS) possible additions: edge matching revisions, data point locations, cross sections, bedrock topography contains glacial border of Illinois Episode in southern Illinois
Summary: Proposed Surficial Geologic Mapping FY2019 NORTHERN ILLINOIS PROJECT: Blue Island, Harvey and Steger Quadrangles Societal relevance: engineering, aggregate, groundwater, surface hydrology Scientific research: glacial Lake Chicago shorelines and meltwater outlets, moraines and till stratigraphy SOUTHERN ILLINOIS PROJECT: Crossville and New Harmony Quadrangles Societal relevance: groundwater, aggregate, seismic hazards Scientific research: slackwater lake chronology, glacial-postglacial transition, glaciofluvial processes in Wabash River valley WILLIAMSON COUNTY COMPILATION: merge GIS files, add cross sections, data point locations, adjust contacts according to LiDAR elevation data
