We consider first-order symmetric system Jy B(t)y = (t)f(t) on an interval = [a, b) with the regular endpoint a. A distribution matrix-valued function Σ(s), s, is called a pseudospectral function of such a system if the corresponding Fourier transform is a partial isometry with the minimally possible kernel. The main result is a parametrization of all pseudospectral functions of a given system by means of a Nevanlinna boundary parameter τ. Similar parameterizations for regular systems have earlier been obtained by Arov and Dym, Langer and Textorius, A. Sakhnovich. The natural generalization of a spectral function to this case is an [H]-valued distribution function Σ( ) such that the Fourier transform V Σ of the form (3) is a partial isometry. f Σ( ) is such a function, then the inverse Fourier transform (4) is valid for each f H ker V Σ. Therefore, the following problem seems to be interesting: To characterize [H]-valued distribution functions Σ( ) such that the corresponding Fourier transform V Σ is a partial isometry with minimally possible kernel ker V Σ and describe these functions in terms of boundary conditions. n the paper we solve this problem applying the extension theory of symmetric linear relations to symmetric systems. As it is known, system () generates the minimal (symmetric) linear relation T min and the maximal relation T max (= T * min) in H (for more details see Sect. 3.). The domain dom T max of relation T max is the set of all absolutely continuous functions y H satisfying Jy B(t)y = (t)f(t) (a.e. on ) (5) with some f( ) H. The following theorem obtained in the paper plays a crucial role in our considerations. Theorem.. We call system () absolutely definite if the Lebesgue measure of the set {t : (t) is invertible} is positive. The main result of the paper is a parametrization of all pseudospectral and spectral functions of absolutely definite system () with deficiency indices n ± (T min ) of the minimal relation satisfying n (T min ) n + (T min ). Such a parametrization is given by the following theorem. Theorem.3. Let system () be absolutely definite and assume for simplicity that n + (T min ) = n (T min ). Note that operator function M(λ) in (8) is defined in terms of the boundary values of respective operator solutions of () at the endpoints a and b, while Ω 0 (λ) and S(λ) are defined in terms of M(λ). Observe also that similar to (8), (9) parametrization of [H H]-valued pseudospectral functions corresponding to self-adjoint extensions of T min can be found in recent works [5, 6]. Existence of pseudospectral functions follows also from the results of [2, 7]. n these papers all pseudospectral functions of regular system () are parametrized in the form close to (8), (9). Note that the proof of the results of [2] is not complete (for more details see emark 3.23). ecall that system () is called a Hamiltonian system if H = {0}. [H]-valued pseudospectral functions Σ H ( ) of a Hamiltonian system corresponding to a certain truncated Fourier transform are studied in [4,, 3]. n the case H = C existence of a scalar function Σ H ( ) is proved in []. A description of all pseudospectral functions Σ H ( ) of a regular Hamiltonian system is obtained in [4, 3]. Such a description is given in terms of a linear-fractional transform of a Nevanlinna operator pair, which plays a role of a parameter. Our approach is based on concepts of a boundary triplet for a symmetric relation and the corresponding Weyl functions (see [8, 9, 0,, 2, 3, 4] and references therein). n the framework of this approach the operator M(λ) in (8) is the Weyl function of an appropriate boundary triplet for T max. Moreover, conditions (0) and () are implied by results on Π- admissibility from [, 6]. n conclusion note that spectral functions of very general boundary problems were studied in the recent papers [5, 6]. 2. Preliminaries 2.. Notations. The following notations will be used throughout the paper: H, H denote Hilbert spaces; [H, H 2 ] is the set of all bounded linear operators defined on the Hilbert space H with values in the Hilbert space H 2 ; [H] := [H, H]; P L is the orthoprojection in H onto the subspace L H; C + (C ) is the upper (lower) half-plane of the complex plane. ecall that a closed linear relation from H 0 to H is a closed linear subspace in H 0 H. The set of all closed linear relations from H 0 to H (in H) will be denoted by C(H 0, H ) ( C(H)). A closed linear operator T from H 0 to H is identified with its graph gr T C(H 0, H ).
