1 Year 3 Climate Key Enquiry Question How are we involved in climate change? Unit Objectives To locate cities of the United Kingdom To identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Hemisphere, Tropics and Meridian To understand and use terms relating to weather and climate. To understand why people go on holiday, identifying the weather as an important factor. To understand man s impact on the environment. To understand relation between transport and CO2 emission. To begin to suggest ways in which individual choices can impact on the environment. To examine weather patterns in different parts of the world and say how they differ. To design a poster to persuade people to make individual choices benefiting the environment. Key vocabulary Latitude: Longitude: Weather: Climate: GMT: Meridian Line: Key Places: Tropic of Cancer Tropic of Capricorn Arctic region Antarctic region Equator
2 Before we introduced our topic or question, we visited the Royal Observatory to have a look at the Greenwich Meridian Line and to discuss its importance Before clocks, people would use a sundial to tell the time. This is the Prime Meridian Line, where time is set for the whole world! We learnt all about longitude and latitude lines!
3 Our Questions: Where is Greenwich on the globe? Why is it important? What is latitude? What is climate like at the equator? Why is our climate different? What happens in a hurricane? Is the U.K. prone to hurricanes? How do they feel when a hurricane happens? How do they forecast our weather? What do the terms mean? Where are the most popular holiday destinations? How does climate affect where we go on holiday? Do we only want sunshine for holidays? Can human activity have a detrimental effect on the environment? How are we involved in climate change? How can we make a difference?
4 Learning Challenge: Can I show my understanding of the globe and its various divisions, especially the importance of Greenwich? - I can understand the importance of Greenwich in the World - I can understand what latitude, longitude and the equator are - I can compare the weather on the equator to Greenwich We looked at a globe and discussed where the UK, London and Greenwich are in the World. We discussed at Greenwich Mean Time and its importance in the world. We learnt that Greenwich meantime is important because this is where time is set - the standard time. This is the time in the UK now. We also looked at what the weather is like on the equator and compared it to our climate. Key Vocabulary: latitude, longitude and equator.

6 Learning challenge: Can I show my understanding of and use terms relating to weather and climate? We coloured in on a map the location of different climate zones, can you spot a pattern?
7 Learning challenge: Can I use a variety of sources to research different climate zones? Working in groups we each researched a different type of climate to present to the class.

9 Learning Challenge: Can I explain how a hurricane is formed? We looked at where hurricanes in the world occur and put the hurricane process in order.
10 Learning Challenge: Can I understand weather terms and predictions? We looked at how the weather is forecast via the Met Office, we even filmed some of our weather predictions! Key Words: Observe Assimilate Numerical Weather Prediction Human forecast The Beast from the East arrived in London. This made for some fantastic live weather reports!

16 Learning Challenge: Can I produce a piece of art, inspired by The Great Wave? In our Art lessons we recreated The Great Wave off Kanagawa also known as The Great Wave or simply The Wave, which is a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai. We decided to adapt our paintings by using bright colours, as opposed to the blue tones used in the original print. An orange sky really makes the blue waves stand out - Lara I m going to use yellow colours to show that this is happening during the day Nikita. I have use purples to show that the weather is dark and stormy - Abbie
