6 DEVELOPMENT Workshop for Early Career Geoscience Faculty July 05 A week-long workshop bringing together early career faculty within the geosciences to discuss a variety of topics including effective teaching strategies, course design, establishing a research program in a new setting, working with research students, balancing professional and personal responsibilities, and time management. American Association of Physics Teachers New Faculty Workshop June 03 National workshop for new teaching faculty in physics and related disciplines. Seminars cover the scholarship and implementation of effective teaching pedagogy, presenting a wide variety of proven classroom techniques that can be implemented with minimal time and effort for time-crunched new faculty. Preparing the Professoriate Fellow August 0 May 0 Preparing the Professoriate (PTP) is a program over the course of an academic year that gives doctoral students and faculty the opportunity to develop a mentoring relationship centered on teaching. PTP consists of regular seminar meetings that discuss a variety of issues related to academic careers, in addition to the mentoring relationship with a faculty member. Fellows observe their mentor s teaching for one semester, then co-teach a course with them the next semester. At the conclusion of the program, each fellow completes a teaching portfolio detailing his or her work and reflections from the PTP year. For my PTP experience, I am co-mentored by Dr. Matthew Parker and Dr. Gary Lackmann. Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning Forum October 0 A national forum designed to consider the ways in which graduate students and post-docs gain the knowledge, skills and experience they need to become successful faculty members across science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. Fundamentals in Teaching Workshops Spring 0 The Fundamentals in Teaching (FIT) workshops are designed to provide training and support for graduate students interested in learning the basic concepts of teaching. Several workshops were attended throughout the Spring 0 semester, including Introduction to Teaching, Learning Styles, Classroom Management, Evaluation and Grading, Creating Tests that Assess Higher Order Thinking, Teaching Through Discussion, Effective Questioning Techniques, and Motivational Teaching Strategies. PROGRAMMING AND SCRIPTING LANGUAGES Fortran Matlab GrADS Python 6

7 FIELD EXPERIENCE VORTEX Field Program May June 009, 00 Member of the mobile sounding team, launching weather balloons in the vicinity of supercell storms. Acted as team leader in one vehicle, ensuring safe passage around storms and navigating to the appropriate storm-relative location for data collection. Valparaiso University Convective Field Study June 005, 006, 007 Participant in 0-day storm chase trips under the direction of Dr. Bart Wolf. Students worked together to forecast the location of severe storms, and applied nowcasting techniques learned in the classroom in order to pursue and observe a variety of severe weather.
