9 MarcoPolo- R NASA ContribuFon PotenFal NASA contribufon to MP- R includes the MarcoPolo- R Integrated Sampling Mechanism (MPRISM) MPRISM integrates pyrotechnic rock chippers with the OSIRIS- REx gas- driven sampler, TAGSAM Rock chipper OSIRIS- REx sample arm MPRISM Sampling system consists of the TAGSAM gas- driven sampler with rock chippers Up To 3 Sample Acquisi-on AIempts Enabled Upon contact with asteroid surface, rock chipper is fired and high pressure N 2 gas flow is ini-ated Chipper dislodges and breaks up consolidated surface, large regolith par-cles for collec-on Gas fluidizes dislodged and surface regolith and carries it into the collec-on tray on the TAGSAM Head Simula-on and tes-ng have confirmed that 3- cm par-cles can be collected Poten-al NASA contribu-ons also include a scanning mechanism for the MaRIS near- IR imaging spectrometer, a payload instrument selected for MarcoPolo- R 1/8/2014 9
