4 Key features of KAGRA We are here today. The detector will be constructed underground Kamioka. Reduction of seismic noise (to approximately 1/100). Very high sensitivity. Cryogenic mirrors will be used to reduce the thermal noise (in the 2 nd phase). KAGRA project 4

Optics system and tests Cryogenic system Today The construction/operation plan is in 2 stages: At the end of 2015, non-cryogenic operation (ikagra). Starting operation with cryogenic system in JFY 2017 (bkagra). (High sensitivity operation in?) KAGRA project 11

However, full end-to-end (relatively short) observation, in order to experience the operation and to understand the potential problems as soon as possible. Full bkagra with; power and signal recycling, cryogenic sapphire mirrors, and ~180W laser. KAGRA project 12

19 Status (some delay ) The underground water has been (much) more than expected, in particular during spring (due to melting snow). It has been impossible to install the in-vacuum devises. Additional civil-engineering work to minimize the effect of the water during this winter-spring. Rescheduling of the installation and commissioning works KAGRA project 19

20 Water proof of the experimental rooms Walls and the floor of the Center and X and Y end rooms have been coated by plastic. But that was not good enough. Therefore, plastic sheets were used to cover the roof and wall. But this is still not perfect. We will have another roof on top of the clean booths soon. KAGRA project 20

34 Data analysis activities KAGALI Development KAGRA data analysis group is developing KAGRA s data analysis library called KAGra Algorithmic LIbrary or KAGALI. Compact Binary Coalescence (CBC) Pipeline development for frequency domain matched filtering (MF) Low latency analysis (time domain MF) (Osaka CU) : components preparation. Bayesian parameter estimation : Basic study with KOREAN group Alert sending system to EM partners (multi-messenger astronomy) Burst Development of single detector search pipeline. Data Retrieving, Data Conditioning, Event Selection : implemented. Parameter Estimation : In progress. Continuous Wave(CW) Developing codes using the resampling technique. KAGRA project 34

35 Joining the global GW network Ad. LIGO GEO-HF KAGRA Ad. Virgo LIGO-India The scientific output will be maximized by the global network. KAGRA has to learn various experiences / technologies from the existing interferometers. KAGRA will join the worldwide network of gravitational wave detection / astronomy. 38 Summary KAGRA is a unique GW interferometer with the underground site and the cryogenic technology. The underground water during spring is a problem. Due to this problem, the KAGRA detector construction has been delayed for several months. But, we would like to keep the overall schedule as we initially planed: Initial operation (ikagra) in late We have to work really hard! We plan to start the full cryogenic operation within JFY 2017, and to play an important role as a member of the global GW network. KAGRA would like to contribute to the global network of gravitational wave detection/astronomy. KAGRA project 38
