1 Art and Culture Center of Hollywood Distance Learning Integrated Art Lesson Title: A Volumetric Cone: Creating a Colorful Cornucopia Description and Overall Focus: The purpose of this lesson is to teach students how geometric shapes (circle, triangle) relate to volumetric forms (cone) and can create accurate representations of holiday objects. Students will also learn about the origins of the cornucopia and its meaning, the Thanksgiving harvest celebration of the Plymouth Settlement, and how important it is to remember the things for which we are thankful. Length of Lesson 45 minutes 1 hour Grade Range Elementary School Sunshine State Standards National Art Standards and FCAT Benchmarks (See below) Objective(s) This lesson will teach students how to create the conical form, known during Thanksgiving as a cornucopia, and a Thanksgiving greeting to share that for which they are thankful. Students will relate geometric shapes to volumetric forms in order to create an accurate representation of a harvest cornucopia. Materials: PLEASE NOTE: Some materials must be acquired prior to this lesson Teacher Supplies: Templates (printed on card stock): Curved Cone 1 per 2 students Pieces: fruit and vegetables - one set per 3-5 students Student Supplies: Brown Grocery bags 1 per 2-4 students 8 ½ 11 sheets of colored construction paper for cutting message strips and for tracing the fruits and vegetables (colors: red, orange, yellow, dark green, purple and brown) Drawing pencil, eraser and black crayon or marker Scissors Glue or glue stick Introductory activity Students will begin by learning a brief history of the origins of the term cornucopia. Students will then learn about the original Thanksgiving harvest celebration of the Plymouth Settlement in Massachusetts. This will be accomplished through cutting/folding to produce volume.

2 Core activity Students will begin by cutting out their cone pieces. They will continue by forming cones out of the flat shapes. Then they will trace and cutout the fruit and vegetable pieces on colored construction paper. The cornucopia will be formed then filled. Closure activity Students will complete their creations making sure that the components are secured properly. They will have also added curled thankful messages around the opening of the cornucopia. Several students will then share their completed pictures with the rest of their classmates. Assessment Students will have learned about the etymology of the word cornucopia and the origin of American Thanksgiving. They will also have learned how cutting and folding techniques can create a recognizable volumetric form. Finally, the students will have completed 5 different colorful and thankful messages, placing them around the opening of the cornucopia. Teacher follow-up idea The classroom teacher can use the websites below to present more of the information surrounding the fall harvest, Thanksgiving and etymology. Student follow-up idea Students can continue to create a progressively sophisticated cornucopia (and other fall harvest projects) by wrapping it in yarn or twine. They may also try to paint or hand-color (to shade) the components before building their harvest sculptures. 3 The Cornucopia A contemporary cornucopia made in mosaic. The cornucopia shows the good qualities of several Greek gods, particularly those associated with the harvest or abundance. Such goddesses as Gaia or Terra (Earth) and Fortuna (luck) who had the power to grant wealth and happiness, are represented as holding a cornucopia. In the Roman world, abundance was shown by a cornucopia, as well. The cornucopia pictured on an Ancient Greek vase. The cornucopia (in Latin also cornu copiae) or horn of plenty is a symbol of abundance and nourishment. It is commonly a large horn-shaped container overflowing with fruit, vegetables, flowers, nuts, or wealth in some form. Originating in Ancient Greece and Rome, it has continued as a symbol in Western art. In the United States, it is particularly associated with the Thanksgiving holiday. The cornucopia is seen on Ancient Greek coins.

4 The Origin of the First Thanksgiving Plymouth Colony (sometimes New Plymouth, or Plymouth Bay Colony, also known as Plimoth Plantation) was an English colonial venture in North America from 1620 to The first settlement of the Plymouth Colony was at New Plymouth, a location previously surveyed and named by Captain John Smith. The settlement, which served as the capital of the colony, is today the modern town of Plymouth, Massachusetts. At its height, Plymouth Colony occupied most of the southeastern portion of the modern state of Massachusetts. Despite the colony's relatively short history, Plymouth holds a special role in American history. Rather than coming to North America for business and trade, the citizens of Plymouth were fleeing religious persecution and searching for a place to worship as they wanted. Many of the people and events surrounding Plymouth Colony have become part of American folklore, including the North American tradition known as Thanksgiving and the monument known as Plymouth Rock. Founded by a group of settlers who later came to be known as the Pilgrims, Plymouth Colony was one of the earliest successful and sizable colonies to be founded by the English in North America, known as New England. Aided by Squanto, a Native American of the Patuxet people, the colony was able to establish a treaty with Chief Massasoit which helped to ensure the colony's success. The native Americans also taught the Pilgrims about fishing, hunting and growing crops, such as wild corn (known as maize) and squash. In early autumn of 1621, the Pilgrims celebrated their successful harvest, as was the English custom. During this time, many of the Native Americans joined their great chief, Massasoit, at the settlement. That 1621 celebration is remembered as the First Thanksgiving in Plymouth. Massasoit had sent some of his own men to hunt deer for the feast and for three days, the English and native men, women and children ate together. The meal consisted of deer, corn, shellfish, and roasted meat, far from today's traditional Thanksgiving feast. Today we celebrate Thanksgiving with our families eating turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie! We give thanks for what we love!

5 Templates: Enlarge or reduce to the point that the height of the cone is 7 or 8, and the message strip is 4 long. You might need to use Legal size paper in your copier.
