ATLAS ITK Pixel 2018 CERN Plans (plus some telescope infrastructure) H6 USER MEETING 14th March 2018 A. Rummler1, M. Bomben2, J. Weingarten3 1 CERN; 2UPD&LPNHE, Paris; 3Göttingen University On behalf of the ITK pixel testbeam community
Telescopes and Beam ATLAS pixel detector will be replaced during phase 2 upgrade Mostly position resolved measurement of irradiated and irradiated hybrid pixel modules (planar and 3d) of different designs and sizes under cold conditions TDR has been concluded successfully with last year s data but now preparing for sensor decision Measurements as part of the just starting tendering process New front-end: RD53A Requires gaining operational experience More realistic readout systems / systems test: Felix... In the venue of system test already successfully conducted stave measurements last year Will be continued this year Require at least one additional XSCA in H6A or H6B ACONITE telescope in H6A and AIDA telescope in H6B will be used simultaneously (including the infrastructure of cold box, HV and LV) Beam: 120 GeV pion beam No particular polarity favored Usual focus of ~1 cm diameter in our telescopes at 0/0 (wire chamber) O(10^6 on target) Last year s beam file as basis 3
EUDET Telescopes at CERN Two SPS telescopes: 6 Mimosa-26 planes TLU/EUDAQ FE-I4 ROI/timing plane EUTelescope + TBMON2 ATLAS owned and maintained ACONITE telescope in H6A Four planes failures in 2017 procurement ongoing and replacement to be shipped this week Telescope currently dismantled for H6A remodeling Trying to acquire additional FE-I4 timing planes Work ongoing to improve telescope performance (organized after last BTTB) 4
ITK Pixel CERN test beams 2018 Parasitic possible Parasitic booked HGTD Most tracker like objects compatible w.r. to beam limitation telescope availability ITK Pixel Testbeam Activities 5
Document reference 6
Backup Document reference 7
EUDET Telescopes at CERN AIDA telescope in H6B currently dismantled for DESY table maintenance North area renovation project is slowly starting starting this year in order to ensure availability of beam facility for the next decades Areas Huts / Air condition Supply systems Magnets 8
2018 Infrastructure Upgrade? The data taking speed of the existing telescope planes can be multiplied as has been demonstrated in Bonn with the ANEMONE small project has been started one week ago Prerequisites: New TLU AZAELA has already a pre-production one Expressed interest to buy one each of ACONITE and AIDA as soon as possible EUDAQ2 Eutelescope overhaul Manpower! Tbmon2 maintenance Eutelescope maintenance STcontrol producer DCS Second cold box: Make H6B more usuable Save time by faster cool down and avoid issues with gradient Get permanent modern generation readout systems permanently for the testbeam Good experience with Gen2 USBpix A lot of setup time is saved by having a permanent, well-tested, setup New replacement planes bought trying to have spares at CERN Other infrastructure measures in backup (progress with secondary fridge) has to be done until April 9
EUDET Telescopes Infrastructure MPI cooling box enables to choose and maintain module temperatures down to -40 C using a low temperature chiller and nitrogen flushing Maximum 2kV bias voltage with current monitoring Temperature and humidity are monitored and recorded Low voltage supply HSIO-II, MIO2 and MMC3 readout (partially user provided) Rigid PCB and flex modules in different sizes can be accommodated 10
Setup Preparation and Upgrade Taller cooling box enabling simpled installation of Quad modules and Flexes has been installed Secondary cooling system for H6B discussion ongoing about synergies with HGTD and ITK strips Further plans: Camera(s) in the area for monitoring movement interest from TSO Online UPS for telescope protection Cooling box: Absolute position (e.g. linear encoders, very useful for strips as well) Integrated control program Solve USB situation Alignment laser and better tool for z-position measurement Make height adjustment easier (Talks about complete renovation of ACONITE for 2018 started) DCS monitoring for telescope as increased early indicator for plane failure Learned more about DESY plans Improve Module DCS software capabilities (limits) and integrate in raw data stream Also interest from other users New DAQ hardware (started using Gen3 USBpix systems) lots of smaller items ROI / timing planes for all telescopes More details Regular test beam meetings: 11
There was positive feedback thanks to everybody! But we can always use more people there is a lot to do. Activity will commence in test beam free time during winter. Software / Reconstruction... TBMon 2 Analysis framework Needs documentation, refactoring and maintenance EUTelescope Improvement installation procedure Magnetic field reconstruction Plane exclusion General refactoring and maintenance Updated instructions and script available: Do not use old hacks and workarounds EUDAQ Contribute to v1 and v2 development and maintenance Converter plugin to be fixed for quad modules and multiple producers Many changes in eudaq (FSM, ) will lead to 1.7 soon, required changes in producers used by us (STcontrol, rceofflineproducer and pybar) required DAQ software, e.g. tuning comparision common software DCS software compare to hardware Documentation! (also true for the hardware/operational aspects) Long term: EUDAQv2 + TLU changes 300x data rate? Comparison / Qualification of reconstruction / analysis chain (between different telescopes) Effort is being planned / campaign should start soon Matching radii / cuts (influence and optimization) More information: EUDAQ workshop: BTTB workshops: Good news about final version of new TLU first tests at CERN in east area 12
