Generalizations If one replaces the derivative by a difference, q-difference, divided difference (Askey-Wilson) operator then one gets all the orthogonal polynomials in the Askey table. (not the ASCII table!) What about replacing the first derivative in the Pearson equation by a second derivative? Problem (A.P. Prudnikov, 1992) Construct the orthogonal polynomials for the weight ρ ν = 2x ν/2 K ν (2 x) on [0, ) for ν 0, where K ν is the modified Bessel function of the second kind, satisfying x 2 y (x) + xy (x) (x 2 + ν 2 )y(x) = 0.

The problem statement is not natural. It is really a problem for a system of first order differential equations (x ν ρ ν ) = x ν 1 ρ ν+1 ρ ν+1 = ρ ν and involves two weight functions on [0, ) ρ ν (x) = 2x ν/2 K ν (2 x), ρ ν+1 (x) = 2x (ν+1)/2 K ν+1 (2 x).

The natural question is to ask for the multiple orthogonal polynomials for the two weights (x α ρ ν, x α ρ ν+1 ) on [0, ), with α > 1 and ν 0.

of type 2 satisfy 0 0 P n,m (x)x k x α ρ ν (x) dx = 0, k = 0, 1,..., n 1, P n,m (x)x k x α ρ ν+1 (x) dx = 0, k = 0, 1,..., m 1, where P n,m is a monic polynomial of degree m + n.

of type 2 satisfy 0 0 P n,m (x)x k x α ρ ν (x) dx = 0, k = 0, 1,..., n 1, P n,m (x)x k x α ρ ν+1 (x) dx = 0, k = 0, 1,..., m 1, where P n,m is a monic polynomial of degree m + n. Type 1 multiple orthogonal polynomials are the pair (A n,m, B n,m ), with deg A n,m = n and deg B n,m = m, satisfying 0 [A n,m (x)ρ ν (x)+b n,m (x)ρ ν+1 (x)]x α x k dx = 0, k = 0, 1,..., n+m. and we often write Q n,m (x) = A n,m (x)ρ ν (x) + B n,m (x)ρ ν+1 (x).
