1 Initial rigi response an softening transition of highly stretchable kirigami sheet materials Miori Isobe an Ko Okumura,* arxiv: v2 [con-mat.soft] 3 May 26 Department of Physics an Soft Matter Center, Ochanomizu University, 2, Otsuka, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo 2-86, Japan * corresponing author: okumura@phys.ocha.ac.jp ABSTRACT We stuy, experimentally an theoretically, the mechanical response of sheet materials on which line cracks or cuts are arrange in a simple pattern. Such sheet materials, often calle kirigami (the Japanese wors, kiri an gami, stan for cut an paper, respectively), emonstrate a unique mechanical response promising for various engineering applications such as stretchable batteries: kirigami sheets possess a mechanical regime in which sheets are highly stretchable an very soft compare with the original sheets without line cracks, by virtue of out-of-plane eformation. However, this regime starts after a transition from an initial stiff regime governe by in-plane eformation. In other wors, the softness of the kirigami structure emerges as a result of a transition from the two-imensional to three-imensional eformation, i.e., from stretching to bening. We clarify the physical origins of the transition an mechanical regimes, which are reveale to be governe by simple scaling laws. The results coul be useful for controlling an esigning the mechanical response of sheet materials incluing cell sheets for meical regeneration an relevant to the evelopment of materials with tunable stiffness an mechanical force sensors. Introuction Sheet materials, such as paper, plastic film, an metal foil, are a familiar form of materials an useful in aily life, for example, for wrapping. However, their unique moes of mechanical responses are highly nontrivial an have actively been stuie mainly from funamental points of view, which inclues crumpling of paper,,2 pleating of paper (Miura-ori or Origami), 3 5 creasing of elastomer films, 6 wrinkling of thin sheets, 7,8 an twisting of ribbons. 9 Quite recently, it has been shown that such peculiar mechanical responses of sheet materials are also promising for engineering applications, such as folable actuators, self-foling shape-memory composites, stretchable lithium-ion batteries, 2 stretchable electroes, 3 stretchable graphens, 4,5 an integrate solar tracking. 6 One of the key factors in these quite recent engineering applications is the introuction of many cuts into sheet materials, often calle the kirigami approach in recent papers. In principle, this approach allows us to esign an control the elastic properties of sheet materials in a highly flexible manner. In fact, supermarkets in Japan often istribute one who buys bottles of wine with sheets of paper perforate with regularly arrange cuts to protect the bottles (see Fig. (a)). Similarly, a Japanese esign factory prouces airvase (Fig. (b)) sol in museum shops worlwie. Figure (c) emonstrates a paper with similar cuts in planer tension. However, any simple relations between the mechanical response an arrangements of cuts have not been explore, although such a relation, if available, coul be useful for esigning commercial, engineering, or artistic applications. Here, we performe a systematic stuy on the force-extension relation for sheets of papers with regularly arrange cuts. As a result, we fin a number of regimes for the mechanical response an clarify the physics of the transition between the first rigi an secon soft regimes, at the level of scaling laws. Experiment In this stuy, we focus on simple perforation patterns as shown in Fig. 2(a) an in the Supporting Information vieo file. Patterns are fabricate by a commercial cutting plotter (silhouette CAMEO, Graphtec Corp.). The patterns are characterize by the length w of each cut (w 3 mm), the horizontal an vertical spacing between the cuts ( 5 mm), with w an satisfying the conition w>. The number N of cuts of length w is fixe to, making the sample height to be 2N as inicate in Fig. 2(a). The sample can be regare as a serial connection of 2N elementary plates characterize by the lengths, h,, an w+2 w. The material of sheet samples is Kent paper (high quality paper with fine texture mainly use for rafting) of thickness h (h.2.3 mm), whose Young s moulus E is measure to be in the range E GPa (with the stanar eviations less than 5 %). We measure force as a function of extension by a force gauge (FGP-

In orer to minimize experimental errors, the ata in Figs. 3 an 4 below are obtaine within a short perio in which temperature an humiity are relatively stable. An example of the overall mechanical response is shown in Fig. 2(b) with snapshots. In the first regime, which is linear as shown in the inset, the eformation is restricte in-plane eformation: small stretch occurs as a result of in-plane bening of elementary plates (a simplifie view is shown in Fig. 2(c)). In the secon regime, out-of-plane bening of elementary plates accompanie by their rotation of angle θ allows more stretch (see Fig. 2() for a simplifie view). In the thir regime, the eformation is rather localize near the tips of the cuts, leaing to harening of the mechanical response an finally to fracture. Theory The principle results of this paper can be summarize as follows. In the initial to secon regime, the in-plane eformation energy competes with the out-of-plane eformation energy. The transition between the two regimes occurs when the two energies become equal. This conition is foun to be given by the following critical extension c = 2Nδ c or critical strain ε c = δ c /: δ c h 2 /. () In the initial regime ( < c ), the response can be escribe by the force-extension law or the stress-strain relation, which is linear: F = K or σ = E ε, (2) where K i = k i /(2N) an E i = k i /(hw) with k E 3 h/w 3. (3) In the secon regime ( > c ), the response becomes quasi-linear: F = ck c + K 2 or σ = ce ε c + E 2 ε (4) with <c< where k 2 Eh 3 /w 3. (5) This transition is certainly from har to soft regime, as confirme by the ratio K 2 /K (h/) 2. The observe rop of force at the transition can be estimate as ( c)k c because K c K 2 for small θ. In the following, these relations are theoretically explaine with theoretical limitations an the agreement between theory an experiment is shown. 2/7

4 In orer to unerstan the mechanical response, we remin the bening energy of a plate of length L, with b, an thickness a for the small bening eflection δ (δ L): 2 U(δ) L,a,b Ea 3 bδ 2 /L 3. (6) Dimensionally, this is given as follows (see Fig. 2(e)). We set the x, y, an z axes in the irection of L, a, an b, respectively. The energy per unit volume for a bening of the plate (Young s moulus E) characterize by the curvature R scales as Eε 2 /2 (this is exact when Poisson s ratio ν is zero), where the strain is estimate by ε = ((R+y)ϕ Rϕ)/Rϕ = y/r with ϕ the central angle of the arc in Fig. 2(e) when the plate occupies the region a/2 y a/2. For the eflection δ of the plate in the y irection, the total bening energy is given by Lb a/2 a/2 ye(y/r)2 /2, which leas to Eq. (6) with the numerical coefficient 8/3 (i.e., 8/(3( ν 2 )) at ν = 2 ), because the raius of curvature /R is given by 2δ/(L/2) 2 in the limit δ L. To characterize the mechanical response in the initial regime, we simply consier superposition of the in-plane bening illustrate in Fig. 2(c). By ientifying the parameter set(l,a,b) with the set(w,,h), we obtain the eformation energy in the initial regime: U ( )=2NU(δ ) w,,h for δ, w (7) with =2Nδ because our test samples can be regare as a serial connection of 2N elementary plates. This energy scaling with 2 results in the linear force-extension relation in Eq. (2) with Eq. (3). Here, the stress σ an the corresponing elastic moulus E are introuce by the efinitions σ = F/(hw) an σ = E /(2N). The mechanical response in the secon regime can be estimate by simply consiering superposition of the out-of-plane bening with rotation illustrate in Fig. 2(e). With the replacement(l, a, b) (w, h, ), the eformation energy is given by U 2 ( )=2NU(δ 2 ) w,h, for δ 2, w (8) with the relation δ 2 2 =( /2N+ )2 2 (see the triangle in Fig. 2()). The energy in Eq. (8) scaling with ( /2N+ ) 2 2 leas to the quasi-linear force proportional to /2N + in Eq. (4) with Eq. (5). The crossover from the initial to the secon regime occurs when the two energies U ( ) an U 2 ( ) coincie with each other, which leas to Eq. (). For a given, the eformation with the smaller energy is favore, confirming the crossover from U ( ) to U 2 ( ) at = c as increases. We can show that the numerical coefficient for Eq. () an Eq. (3) are of the orer of unity an <c < in Eq. (4), as announce, in a naive assumption in which the numerical coefficients for Eq. (7) an Eq. (8) are both given by 8/(3( ν 2 )). Experiment an theory Equation (3) for the stiffness constant K can be well confirme as shown in Fig. 3(a) an (b). This quantity, experimentally etermine from the slope of a plot as shown in the inset of Fig. 2(b), is given as a function of h for various an w in Fig. 3(a). When the two axes are rescale accoring to Eq. (3), namely, K /(he) (/w) 3, all the ata in Fig. 3(a) collapse onto a master curve as shown in Fig. 3(b), confirming the theory. The slight iscrepancy that can be recognize for the ata w 5 is consistent with the preiction because the theory requires the conition w. This collapse preicts the numerical coefficient for this scaling law to be.346±.6 (base on the ata with w>5), which is of the orer of unity, as expecte. Equation () for δ c can also be well confirme as shown in Fig. 4(a) an (b). The critical extension c can be estimate as the en point of the initial linear regime as shown in the inset of Fig. 2(b). This quantity is given as a function of h for various an w in Fig. 4(a). When the two axes are rescale accoring to Eq. (), namely, δ c / (h/) 2, all the ata in Fig. 4(a) collapse onto a master curve as shown in Fig. 4(b), confirming the theory. The slight iscrepancy recognize for the ata with w 5 is again consistent with the preiction. Accoring to this collapse (of the ata with w > 5), the numerical coefficient for the scaling law in Eq. () is obtaine as 3.2±.5. This value is of the orer of unity as expecte. Discussion The assumption employe in Eqs. (7) an (8) that all the elementary plates behave in the same way may be reasonable at the level of scaling laws, as strongly supporte by the goo agreement between theory an experiment. The extension from this level of escription shoul be examine further in a separate stuy. Although no previous stuies are available that focus on the initial rigi regime an the transition of this regime to the following softer regime, at the time of writing this paper we fin a number of recent relate stuies mainly in the engineering community as mentione the introuctory paragraph (In fact, we starte the present stuy, inspire by our previous stuy 2 an examples in Fig. ). Observations in the previous stuies are qualitatively explicable by our simple theory : () The observations an finite-element-moeling (FEM) calculations in the previous stuy 3 focusing on the secon regime are consistent 4/7

6 with Eq. (5), confirming that the soft spring constant increases as increases an as w ecreases. (2) In molecular-ynamics (MD) simulations performe for a graphen kirigami in the previous stuy, 5 the initial rigi regime is practically not observe, which is consistent with our preiction of the isappearance of the initial regime in the limit h (see below). Our results provie guiing principles in the form of simple scaling laws to control an esign similar kirigami structures. The control an esign are important from two opposite aspects. () One aspect is to realize stretchable sheet materials from stiff materials. In such a case, this initial regime is unfavorable an Eq. () gives a clear principle to reuce the range of this initial regime: this regime isappears in the limit h. This preiction is consistent with the previous stuy 5 as mentione above. (2) The opposite aspect is positive utilization of the initial rigi regime, for which we propose two new irections of applications (Note, however, that even in the rigi regime the kirigami sheet is alreay significantly soft compare with the original material as seen from the factor (/w) 3 in Eq. (3)). One possibility is fine tuning of the elastic constant of sheet materials. By virtue of Eq. (3), we coul esign the elasticity of sheet materials at will (in the initial regime). It woul be interesting, for example, to use relatively thick sheet materials, wiening the range of the initial regime. Another possibility is the application for mechanical force sensors. Because of the suen elongation at the critical length an force, we coul esign force sensors on the basis of Eq. () with Eq. (2). In aition, Eq. (5) for small eformation shoul be useful to esign an control the soft response of the kirigami sheets (note that Eq. (5) qualitatively justify observations in the previous stuy 3 as mentione above). A promising example of applications relevant to the present stuy woul be the use of the kirigami structure for cell sheets, which have receive consierable attention in regenerative meicine. 22 As pointe out alreay in the above, our preiction is quite consistent with the FEM results in the previous stuy, 3 whereas the FEM approach an the moel propose here have avantages an isavantages. The FEM approach preicts the results numerically, whereas the present moel preicts the results analytically but without a precise preiction for a numerical coefficient. The numerical coefficient is precisely etermine only through a comparison with experimental ata. But once this is one, the present moel preicts the results numerically in a wie range of important physical parameters without any technical efforts require for the FEM approach. In aition, the present approach provies physical insights into the phenomenon in a clearer manner, giving simple guiing principles for esigning the kirigami structure. However, the present preiction can be use only for the cases satisfying the require conitions, such as w, unlike the FEM analysis; the istribution of strain an stress is only available in the FEM analysis. We consier that the nonlinearity in the stress-strain relationship of sheet materials may not strongly affect the physical pictures provie in the present stuy. Most of materials certainly possess such nonlinearity for large stresses, whereas the kirigami structure contains many cuts at the tips of which stress coul be high. Thus, it woul be natural to ask how such nonlinear effects affect the present framework. This problem coul be in general nontrivial. However, we expect that nonlinear effects ten to be suppresse in the kirigami structure at least in the initial an secon regime, which are the focus of the present stuy. This is because of the following reasons: () In the initial regime the eformation is generally very small. (2) In the secon regime the apparent eformation is large but the basic moe of eformation is still bening, whereas bening is intrinsically relate to small eformation especially when the plate is thin. This expectation for a non-significant role of the nonlinearity is supporte by the agreement between theory an experiment in the present stuy. However, we experimentally observe that the linearity of the slope in the initial regime coul be slightly eteriorate near the transition point in certain cases (although such ata points can be well explaine by our theory). This might be a slight effect of the nonlinearity in the stress-strain relationship of the sheet material. Conclusion We investigate the mechanical response of a simple an representative kirigami structure that remarkably changes original mechanical properties in a systematic way. As a result, we foun simple scaling laws that govern the stiffness of the initial regime an the consecutive softening transition. This transition was reveale to be a transition from the two-imensional to three-imensional eformation, i.e., from stretching to bening. The result obtaine here coul be useful as esign principles for simple kirigami structures. Upon seeing the recent surge of engineering utilization of kirigami structures, we envision that the present results woul be useful for various applications, as well as for funamental unerstaning of the mechanics of sheet materials.
