1 (p.75) CHPTER 4 The Frobenius{Perron Operator The hero of this book is the Frobenius{Perron operator. With this powerful tool we shall study absolutely continuous invariant measures, their existence and properties. This operator was rst introducedby [Kuzmin, 98ab] and describes the e ect of the transformation ona probability density function. 4.Motivation Let X be a random variable on the space = [a;b] having the probability density function f. Then, for any measurable set ½, ProbfX g = fd ; where is the normalized Lebesgue measure on. Let :! be a transformation. Then (X) is also a random variable and it is reasonable to ask: What is the probability density function of (X)? P f weakly in L. 4.3 Representation of the Frobenius{Perron Operator n this section we derive an extremely useful representation for the Frobenius{Perron operator for a large class of one-dimensional transformations. These transformations, which are piecewise monotonic functions on an interval into itself, contain many of the transformations of interest in one-dimensional dynamical modeling and analysis.
