If all edges of H have he same cardinaliy r, hen H is a r-uniform hypergraph; if E consiss of all r-subses of V, hen H is a complee r-uniform hypergraph, denoed by Kn r, where n = V. A r-uniform hypergraph H = (V,E) is (k,l)- edge-maximal if every subhypergraph H of H wih V(H ) l has edge-conneciviy a mos k, bu for any edge e E(Kn r) \ E(H), H + e conains a leas one subhypergraph H wih V(H ) l and edge-conneciviy a leas k+1. In his paper, we obain he lower bounds and he upper bounds of he sizes of (k, l)-edge-maximal hypergraphs. Furhermore, we show ha hese bounds are bes possible. Thus prior resuls in [Y.Z. Tian, L.Q. Xu, H.-J. Lai, J.X. Meng, On he sizes of k-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraphs, arxiv: v3] are exended. Keywords: Edge-conneciviy; (k, l)-edge-maximal hypergraphs; r-uniform hypergraphs 1 Inroducion In his paper, we consider finie simple graphs. For graph-heoreical erminologies and noaion no defined here, we follow [3]. For a graph G, we use κ (G) o denoe he edge-conneciviy of G. The complemen of a graph G is denoed by G c. For X E(G c ), G+X is he graph wih verex se V(G) and edge se E(G) X. We will use G + e for G +{e}. The floor of a real number x, denoed by x, is he greaes ineger no larger han x; he ceil of a real number x, denoed by x, is he leas ineger greaer han or equal o x. For wo inegers n and k, we define ( n k ) = n! k!(n k)! when k n and ( n k ) = 0 when k > n. For generalizing a prior resul of Mader [8], Boesch and McHugh [] inroduced he following definiions. For inegers k and l wih l > k, a graph G wih n = V(G) l is a (k,l)-graph if κ (G ) k for any G G wih V(G ) l. A (k,l)-graph G is (k,l)-edge-maximal if, for any e E(G c ), G+e has a subgraph G wih V(G ) l and κ (G ) k+1. (k,k+1)-edge-maximal graphs have been sudied in [6,8,9], among ohers. Theorem 1.1. Le k be an ineger, and G be a (k,k+1)-edge-maximal graph on n > k+1 verices. Each of he following holds. The research is suppored by NSFC (Nos , , ). Corresponding auhor. ianyzhxj@163.com (Y. 2 (i) (Mader [8]) E(G) (n k)k +( k ). Furhermore, his bound is bes possible. (ii) (Lai [6]) E(G) (n 1)k ( k ) n k+ Furhermore, his bound is bes possible. In [], Boesch and McHugh exended Theorem 1(i) o (k, l)-edge-maximal graphs. Theorem 1.. (Boesch and McHugh []) Le G be a graph of order n and le n l k+1. Le p,q 0 be inegers such ha n = p(l 1)+q wih 0 q < l 1. If G is a (k,l)-edge-maximal graph, hen E(G) p(l 1)(l ) +(p 1+q)k, l 1 > k and q k, p(l 1)(l ) +pk+ q(q 1), l 1 > k and q > k, (l 1)(l ) +(n l+1)k, l 1 k. Furhermore, hese bounds are bes possible. In [7], Lai and Zhang exended Theorem 1(ii) o (k, l)-edge-maximal graphs. Theorem 1.3. (Lai and Zhang [7]) Le G be a graph of order n and le n l k+3 5. Le p,q 0 be inegers such ha n = p(l 1)+q wih 0 q < l 1. If G is a (k,l)-edge-maximal graph, hen E(G) (l 1)(l ) +(n l+1)k, l n < k +4, (n 1)k n k+ (k+1) 3(k+1), l k +4 n, (n a+1)k +a(a 1) n a k+ (k+1) 3(k+1), n l = a k +5, (n b)k +b n b 1 k+ (k+1) 3(k+1), n l = b+1 k +5. Furhermore, hese bounds are bes possible. Le H = (V,E) be a hypergraph, where V is a finie se and E is a se of non-empy subses of V, called edges. An edge of cardinaliy is jus a graph edge. For a verex u V and an edge e E, we say u is inciden wih e or e is inciden wih u if u e. If all edges of H have he same cardinaliy r, hen H is a r-uniform hypergraph; if E consiss of all r-subses of V, hen H is a complee r-uniform hypergraph, denoed by K r n, where n = V. For n < r, he complee r-uniform hypergraph K r n is jus he hypergraph wih n verices and no edges. The complemen of a r-uniform hypergraph H = (V,E), denoed by H c, is he r-uniform hypergraph wih verex se V and edge se consising of all r-subses of V no in E. A hypergraph H = (V,E ) is called a subhypergraph of H = (V,E), denoed by H H, if V V and E E. For X E(H c ), H+X is he hypergraph wih verex se V(H) and edge se E(H) X; for X E(H), H X is he hypergraph wih verex se V(H) and edge se E(H)\X. We use H+e for H +{e} and H e for H {e } when e E(H c ) and e E(H). For Y V(H), we use H[Y] o denoe he hypergraph induced by Y, where V(H[Y]) = Y and E(H[Y]) = {e E(H) : e Y}. H Y is he hypergraph induced by V(H)\Y. For a hypergraph H = (V,E) and wo disjoin verex subses X,Y V, le E H [X,Y] be he se of edges inersecing boh X and Y and d H (X,Y) = E H [X,Y]. We use E H (X) and d H (X)
for E H [X,V \ X] and d H (X,V \ X), respecively. If X = {u}, we use E H (u) and d H (u) for E H ({u}) and d H ({u}), respecively. We call d H (u) he degree of u in H. The minimum degree δ(h) of H is defined as min{d H (u) : u V}; he maximum degree (H) of H is defined as max{d H (u) : u V}. When δ(h) = (H) = k, we call H k-regular. For a nonempy proper verex subse X of a hypergraph H, we call E H (X) an edge-cu of H. The edge-conneciviy κ (H) of a hypergraph H is min{d H (X) : Ø X V(H)}. By definiion, κ (H) δ(h). We call a hypergraph H k-edge-conneced if κ (H) k. A hypergraph is conneced if i is 1-edge-conneced. A maximal conneced subhypergraph of H is called a componen of H. A r-uniform hypergraph H = (V,E) is (k,l)-edge-maximal if every subhypergraph H of H wih V(H ) l has edge-conneciviy a mos k, bu for any edge e E(H c ), H +e conains a leas one subhypergraph H wih V(H ) l and edge-conneciviy a leas k +1. If H is a (k,l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraph wih n = V(H) < l, hen H = K r n. For resuls on he conneciviy of hypergraphs, see [1,4,5] for references. In order o consruc he complee r-uniform hypergraph wih he maximum number of verices and degree a mos k, we inroduce he parameer = (k,r), which is deermined by k and r. Definiion 1. For wo inegers k and r wih k,r, define = (k,r) o be he larges ineger such ha ( 1 r 1 ) k. Tha is, is he ineger saisfying ( 1 r 1 ) k < ( r 1 ). In [10], he auhors deermined, for given inegers n, k and r, he exremal sizes of (k,)- edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraphs on n verices. Theorem 1.4. (Tian, Xu, Lai and Meng [10]) Le H be a (k, )-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraph such ha n and k,r, where n = V(H) and = (k,r). Then each of he following holds. (i) E(H) ( r )+(n )k. Furhermore, his bound is bes possible. (ii) E(H) (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r )) n Furhermore, his bound is bes possible. The main goal of his research is o exend hese resuls in [10]. For given inegers n, k and r, he exremal sizes of a (k, l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraph on n verices are deermined, wherel +1. Secion below is devoed o hesudy of someproperies of (k,l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraphs. In secion 3, we give he upper bounds of he sizes of (k, l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraphs and illusrae ha hese bounds are bes possible. We obain he lower bounds of he sizes of (k, l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraphs and show ha hese bounds are bes possible in secion 4. Properies of (k, l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraphs Because of Theorem 1.4, we assume l +1 in his paper. Lemma.1. Le H = (V,E) be a (k,l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraph such ha n l +1 and k,r, where n = V(H) and = (k,r). Assume X is a proper nonempy subse of V(H) such ha κ (H) = E H (X). Then each of he following holds. (i) E H c(x) Ø. 3
(ii) κ (H) = E H (X) = k. Proof. Le n 1 = X and n = V(H)\X. Then n = n 1 +n. Since H is (k,l)-edge-maximal, we have κ (H) k. (i) Assume E H c(x) = Ø. Then E H (X) consiss of all r-subses of V(H) inersecing boh X and V(H)\X. Thus r 1 E H (X) = ( n 1 s )(n r s ) = (n r ) (n 1 r ) (n r ). s=1 Leg(x) = ( x r)+( r n x ). Iisrouineoverifyhag(x) isadecreasingfuncionwhen1 x n/. If min{n 1,n }, hen by min{n 1,n } n/, we have κ (H) = E H (X) = ( n r ) (n 1 r ) (n r ) (n r ) ( r ) (n r which conradics o κ (H) δ(h). Now we assume min{n 1,n } = 1. Then κ (H) = E H (X) = ( n r ) (n 1 r ) (n r ) = (n r ) (1 r ) (n 1 r ) > ( r 1 n 1 ) δ(h), (1) ) = ( n 1 r 1 ) δ(h), which implies κ (H) = δ(h) = ( r 1 n 1 ) and so H is a complee r-uniform hypergraph. Thus κ (H) = ( r 1 n 1 ) (l 1 r 1 ) ( r 1 ) > k, conrary o κ (H) k. Therefore E H c(x) Ø holds. (ii) By (i), we have E H c(x) Ø. Pick an edge e E H c(x). Since H is (k,l)-edge-maximal, here is a subhypergraph H H+e such ha V(H ) l and κ (H ) k+1. We have e H by H is (k,l)-edge-maximal. I follows ha (E H (X) {e}) E(H ) is an edge-cu of H. Thus E H (X) +1 E H (X) {e} κ (H ) k+1, implying κ (H) = E H (X) k. By κ (H) k, we obain κ (H) = E H (X) = k. Lemma.. Le H = (V,E) be a (k,l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraph such ha n l +1 and k,r, where n = V(H) and = (k,r). Assume X is a proper nonempy subse of V(H) such ha E H (X) = k. Then each of he following holds. (i) If X r 1, hen H[X] conains no edges in E(H), and each edge of E H (X) conains X as a subse. (ii) If r X l 1, hen H[X] is a complee r-uniform hypergraph and X. (iii) If X l, hen H[X] is also a (k, l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraph. Proof. (i) Since H is a r-uniform hypergraph, H[X] conains no edges in E[H] if X r 1. By Lemma.1 and E H (X) = k, we obain k = E H (X) δ(h) κ (H) = k, implying each edge of E H (X) conains X as a subse. (ii) Assume r X l 1. If H[X] is no complee, hen here is an edge e E(H[X] c ) E(H c ) and so H +e has no subhypergraph H wih V(H ) l and κ (H ) k +1, conrary o he assumpion ha H is (k, l)-edge-maximal. Hence H[X] mus be complee. Onheconrary, assume X <. Sinceδ(H) κ (H) = E H (X) = k and( 1 r 1 ) k < ( r 1 ), in order o ensure each verex in X has degree a leas k in H, we mus have X = 1 and k = ( 1 r 1 ). Moreover, each verex in X is inciden wih exac ( r ) edges in E H(X), and hus 4
d H (u) = k for each u X. By Lemma.1 (i), here is an e inersecing boh X and V(H)\X bu e / E H (X). Since X r, here is a verex w X such ha w is no inciden wih e. Then d H+e (w) = k. This implies w is no conained in a (k+1)-edge-conneced subhypergraph of H +e. Bu hen each verex in X \{w} has a mos degree k in (H +e) w, and hus each verex in X \{w} is no conained in a (k +1)-edge-conneced subhypergraph of H +e. This implies ha here is no (k+1)-edge-conneced subhypergraph wih a leas l verices in H +e, a conradicion. Thus we have X. (iii) Assume X l. If H[X] is complee, hen κ (H[X]) = δ(h[x]) = ( X 1 r 1 ) ( l 1 r 1 ) ( r 1 ) > k, conrary o he definiion of (k,l)-edge-maximal hypergraph. Thus H[X] is no complee. For any edge e E(H[X] c ) E(H c ), H+e has a subhypergraphh wih V(H ) l andκ (H ) k+1. Since E H (X) = k, wehave E H (X) E(H ) = Ø. As e E(H ) E(H[X] c ), we conclude ha H is a subhypergraph of H[X] +e, and so H[X] is a (k,l)-edge-maximal r- uniform hypergraph. 3 The upper bounds of he sizes of (k, l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraphs We firs exend he definiion of sar-like-(k, l) graphs in [] o hypergraphs. Definiion. Le k,l,r be inegers such ha k,r and l +1, where = (k,r). Sarlike-(k, l) r-uniform hypergraphs are defined consrucively as follows. Sar wih a complee r-uniform hypergraph K r l 1. Call i he nucleus. Aach a single verex K 1 or a complee r-uniform hypergraph K r i (r i l 1) o his nucleus using k edges joining K 1 or K r i o he nucleus. Call his aached hypergraph a saellie. Aach an arbirary number of such saellies o he nucleus in he same manner. We call r-uniform hypergraphs consruced in his manner sar-like-(k, l) r-unif orm hypergraphs. We use SH(k, l, r) o denoe he collecion of all sar-like-(k, l) r-uniform hypergraphs. See Figure 1 for example. K r i k edges K r r i K i k edges K r l 1 k edges Figure 1. An example of a sar like (k,l) r uniform hypergraph. 5
Definiion 3. For inegers k,r, le s = s(k,r) be he larges ineger such ha k+( s r) ks. Remark 1. Since k + ( r) = k + r ( 1 r 1 ) k + rk k, we have s, where = (k,r) and s = s(k,r). Definiion 4. Le n,k,l,r be inegers such ha k,r and n l +1, where = (k,r). Le p,q 0 be inegers such ha n = p(l 1) +q wih 0 q < l 1. We consruc a class of sar-like-(k, l) r-uniform hypergraphs on n verices as follows. (i) If l 1 > s (where s = s(k,r)), hen a sar-like-(k,l) r-uniform hypergraph consiss of p copies of Kl 1 r, one serving as he nucleus, he res as saellies, ogeher wih addiion saellies deermined as follows: (i-a) if q > s, he single addiional saellie is Kq; r (i-b) if q s, he addiional saellies are q copies of K 1, each aached o he nucleus by k edges. (ii) If l 1 s (where s = s(k,r)), hen he nucleus is Kl 1 r. The saellies are n (l 1) copies of K 1, each aached o he nucleus by k edges. We denoe he collecion of all sar-like-(k, l) r-uniform hypergraphs on n verices consruced in Definiion 4 by MSH(n;k,l,r). Noe ha all hypergraphs in MSH(n;k,l,r) have he same number of edges, denoed his number by E(MSH(n;k,l,r)) for breviy. By definiion, we have E(MSH(n;k,l,r)) = p( l 1 p( l 1 ( l 1 r )+pk +( q r), l 1 > s and q > s, r )+(p 1+q)k, l 1 > s and q s, r )+(n l+1)k, l 1 s. The following heorem shows ha MSH(n;k,l,r) is a class of sar-like-(k,l) r-uniform hypergraphs wih he maximum number of edges among all sar-like-(k, l) r-uniform hypergraphs on n verices. Theorem 3.1. Le n,k,l,r be inegers such ha k,r and n l +1, where = (k,r). Le p,q 0 be inegers such ha n = p(l 1) +q wih 0 q < l 1. For each sar-like-(k,l) r-uniform hypergraph H on n verices, we have E(H) E(MSH(n;k,l,r)). Proof. TheideaofheproofishaweransformH inooneofhehypergraphinmsh(n;k,l,r) by appropriae addiion and deleion of edges. The edge ransformaions applied always yield an increase(no necessary ne increase) in he number of edges. The proof uses wo basic echniques: spliing and grouping. The spliing operaion replaces a single K r i (i r) by i K 1 -saellies. The grouping operaions move verices from smaller o larger saellies (wih corresponding edge addiions and deleions), or cluser a se of K 1 -saellies ino a single large saellie. We define he saellie specrum of a sar-like-(k,l) hypergraph H as (S 1,S r,,s l 1 ), where S i, i {1,r,,l 1}, is he number of saellies of H wih i verices. We consider wo cases. Case 1. l 1 > s, where s = s(k,r). If H conains a Ki r -saellie, r i s, hen perform he spliing operaion. Tha is, replace Ki r-saellie (and he k edges connecing i o he nucleus) by i K 1-saellies (ogeher wih he k edges ha join each of hem o he nucleus). The new hypergraph conains a leas as many edges as H. The argumen is as follows. The number of edges associaed wih he original Ki r-saellie is k + (i r). On he oher hand, he saellies inroduced by he spliing 6
operaion conribue ik edges. Since i s, we have k + ( i r) ik by Definiion 3. Thus he hypergraph produced by he spliing operaion conains a leas as many edges as H. If we repea hisprocesson any remainingki r -saellies, r i s, weevenually obain aransformed hypergraph wih saellie specrum saisfying S i = 0 for r i s. If here are wo saellies Ki r and Kj r saisfying s < i j < l 1. We perform he following grouping operaion (call Grouping operaion 1). Since i > s and ( i 1 r 1 ) ( r 1 ) > k, we can assume ha here is a verex u in Ki r no adjacen o he nucleus. Delee he edges connecing u oki r. Addedges from uo Kr j such ha V(Kr j ) {u} inducesacomplee r-uniformhypergraph. The operaion is edge-increasing because while i removes ( i 1 r 1 ) edges, i adds (j r 1 ) edges. The (Ki r,kr j ) pair of saellies become a (Kr i 1,Kr j+1 ) pair. If i 1 s, hen we apply he spliing operaion o Ki 1 r. We repea he grouping operaion unil a mos one saellie remains in he range s < i < l 1. Now he saellie specrum of he resuling hypergraph is simple. Excep S 1 0, S l 1 0, and some S i0 (s < i 0 < l 1) may be 1 or 0, all oher enries mus be zero. If S 1 and S i0 are posiive, hen we apply a second grouping operaion (call Grouping operaion ). Selec one K 1 -saellie. Delee he k edges connecing he K 1 -saellie o he nucleus. Add( i 0 r 1 )edges connecing hek 1 -saellie oki r 0. Thisransformaion is edge-increasing since ( i 0 r 1 ) > ( s r 1 ) ( r 1 ) > k. We repea his operaion unil he supply of K 1-saellies has been exhaused or he original Ki r 0 has been augmened o Kl 1 r -saellie. If S 1 > s, we apply one furher grouping operaion (call Grouping operaion 3). Le S 1 = p 1 (l 1)+q 1, 0 q 1 < l 1. Replace he S 1 K 1 -saellies by p 1 K r l 1 -saellies, and by eiher q 1 K 1 -saellies or 1 K q1 -saellie, as q 1 s or no. By definion 3, his operaion is edge increasing. This complees he edge ransformaion of he original hypergraph in Case 1. For he resulan hypergraph, eiher S i0 = 1 for some s < i 0 < l 1 and S 1 = 0, or all S i for r i l are zero, which correspond o he case (i-a) or he case (i-b) in Definiion 4. Case. l 1 s, where s = s(k,r). We apply spliing operaion o all saellies. By definiion 3, he resulan hypergraph, which correspond o he case (ii) in Definiion 4, is edge increasing. This complees he proof of he heorem. Theorem 3.. Le n,k,l,r be inegers such ha k,r and n l +1, where = (k,r). Le p,q 0 be inegers such ha n = p(l 1)+q wih 0 q < l 1. If H is a (k,l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraph on n verices, hen p( l 1 r )+pk+( q r), l 1 > s and q > s, E(H) E(MSH(n;k,l,r)) = p( l 1 r )+(p 1+q)k, l 1 > s and q s, ( l 1 r )+(n l+1)k, l 1 s, where s = s(k,r). Proof. By Theorem 3.1, we only need o prove ha here is a sar-like-(k, l) r-uniform hypergraph H on n verices such ha E(H) E(H ). The proof is by inducion on n. If n = l, le H be a sar-like-(k,l) r-uniform hypergraph wih he nucleus Kl 1 r and a single K 1 -saellie. Since κ (Kl r) = (l 1 r 1 ), we need o delee a leas (l 1 r 1 ) k edges such ha he remaining hypergraph have edge-conneciviy a mos k. Since κ (H) = k (by Lemma.1), we have E(Kl r ) E(H) (l 1 r 1 ) k, implying E(H) E(H ). 7
Now we assume n > l, and assume ha for any (k, l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraph wih less han n verices, here is a sar-like-(k, l) r-uniform hypergraph having he same number of verices and a leas as many edges as he given hypergraph. Le F be a minimum edge-cu H. By Lemma.1, we have F = k. We consider wo cases in he following. Case 1. There is a componen, say H 1, of H F such ha V(H 1 ) = 1. Le H = H V(H 1 ). Then V(H ) = n 1 l. By Lemma. (iii), H is (k,l)-edgemaximal. By inducion assumpion, here is a sar-like-(k,l) r-uniform hypergraph, say H, such ha V(H ) = V(H ) and E(H ) E(H ). Le H be he sar-like-(k,l) r-uniform hypergraph obained from H by adding a K 1-saellie. Since E(H) = k + E(H ), we have E(H) E(H ). Case. Each componen of H F has a leas wo verices. Then, by lemma., each componen of H F is eiher a complee r-uniform hypergraph wih a leas verices, or a (k, l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraph wih a leas l verices. Le H 1 be a componen of H F and H = H V(H 1 ). Assume n 1 = V(H 1 ) and n = V(H ). Then n 1 +n = n. Subcase.1. n 1 l and n l. By Lemma., boh H 1 and H are (k,l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraphs. By inducion assumpion, here are wo sar-like-(k,l) r-uniform hypergraphs, say H 1 and H, such ha V(H i ) = V(H i) and E(H i ) E(H i) for i = 1,. Le H be a sar-like-(k,l) r-uniform hypergraphobainedfromh 1 andh bymovinghesaellies ofh 1 oh andchanginghenucleus of H 1 o be a saellie of H. Then E(H ) = E(H 1 ) + E(H ) +k, and hus E(H) E(H ) holds. Subcase.. n 1 l and n < l. By Lemma., H 1 is a (k,l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraphs and H is a complee r-uniform hypergraph wih a leas verices. By inducion assumpion, here is sar-like-(k, l) r-uniform hypergraphs, say H 1, such ha V(H 1 ) = V(H 1) and E(H 1 ) E(H 1). Le H be a sar-like-(k,l) r-uniform hypergraph obained from H 1 by adding H o be a saellie of H 1. Then E(H ) = E(H 1 ) + E(H ) +k, and hus E(H) E(H ) holds. Subcase.3. n 1 < l and n < l. By Lemma., boh H 1 and H are complee r-uniform hypergraphs wih a leas verices. Since E(H) = ( n 1 r )+(n r )+k (l 1 r )+( n l+1 r )+ k, we obain ha each sar-like-(k, l) r-uniform hypergraph on n verices having a leas as many edges as H in his case. Therefore, he proof of his case follows. This complees he proof of Theorem 3.. In he following heorem, we will show ha each hypergraph in MSH(n;k,l,r) is (k,l)-edgemaximal. So he upper bounds given in Theorem 3. are bes possible. Theorem 3.3. Le n,k,l,r be inegers such ha k,r and n l +1, where = (k,r). If H MSH(n;k,l,r), hen H is (k,l)-edge-maximal. 8
Proof. If l 1 =, hen all saellies of H are K 1 -saellies by s, where s = s(k,r). By Lemma 3.1 in [10], H is (k,l)-edge-maximal. Thus, in he following, we assume l 1 >. By definiion, here is no subhypergraph H of H such ha V(H ) l and κ (H ) > k. We will prove he heorem by inducion on n. If n = l, hen H is a sar-like-(k,l) r-uniform hypergraph wih he nucleus Kl 1 r and a K 1-saellie. Since κ (Kl 1 r ) = (l r 1 ) ( r 1 ) > k, for any e E(H c ), we have κ (H +e) > k. Thus H is (k,l)-edge-maximal. Now suppose n > l. We assume ha each hypergraph in MSH(n ;k,l,r), where n < n, is (k,l)-edge-maximal. In he following, we will show ha each H in MSH(n;k,l,r) is also (k, l)-edge-maximal. By conradicion, assume ha here is an edge e E(H c ) such ha H + e conains no subhypergraph H saisfying V(H ) l and κ (H ) > k. Le F be an edge-cu in H +e wih cardinaliy a mos k. Since κ (Kl 1 r ) = (l r 1 ) ( r 1 ) > k and κ (Kq r) = (q 1 r 1 ) (s r 1 ) ( r 1 ) > k when q > s, we obain ha F is exac he edge-cu joining some saellie and he nucleus. Thus here is a componen, say H 1, of H F, such ha H 1 is he hypergraph obained from H by deleing one saellie and e H1 c. By inducion assumpion, H 1 + e conains a subhypergraph H 1 such ha V(H 1 ) l and κ (H 1 ) > k. Bu H 1 is also a subhypergraph of H +e, a conradicion. 4 The Lower bounds of he sizes of (k, l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraphs The following lemma will be needed in proving he main resul in his secion. Lemma 4.1. Le n,a,k,r be inegers such ha k,r and n a, where = (k,r). We have he following wo inequaliies. (i) ( n r) (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n (ii) ( n r) (n a)k+( a r) (( 1)k ( r)) n a Proof. Since E(K r n) = ( n r), he lemma will hold if we can consruc wo r-uniform hypergraphs H and H on n verices such ha E(H) = (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n and E(H ) = (n a)k +( a r) (( 1)k ( r)) n a Le H be a r-uniform sar-like hypergraph wih he nucleus K r, n 1 Kr -saellies and n n K 1-saellies, adding k edges joining each saellie o he nucleus. I is rouine o coun ha E(H) = (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n Le H be a r-uniform sar-like hypergraph wih he nucleus Ka, r n a K-saellies r and n a n a K 1 -saellies, adding k edges joining each saellie o he nucleus. Then E(H ) = (n a)k +( a r) (( 1)k ( r)) n a I is rouine o verify he following lemma. Lemma 4.. For given inegers n and r wih n r, he funcion g(x) = ( x r ) + (n x r ) is decreasing in he range 1 x n/. 9
Theorem 4.3. Le n,k,l,r be inegers such ha k,r and n l +1, where = (k,r). If H is a (k, l)-edge-maximal r-uniform hypergraph on n verices, hen ( l 1 r )+(n l+1)k, l n <, (n 1)k (( 1)k ( E(H) r)) n, l n, (n a+1)k +( a r) (( 1)k ( r)) n a, n l = a +1, (n b)k +( b r)+( b+1 r ) (( 1)k ( r)) n b 1, n l = b Proof. Le F be a minimum edge-cu of H. By Lemma.1, F = k. Assume H 1 is a minimum componen of H F and H = H V(H 1 ). Le n 1 = V(H 1 ) and n = V(H ). Then n = n 1 +n and n 1 n. (i) For l n <, we have n 1 <, and hen n 1 = 1 by Lemma.. If n = l, hen, by Lemma., H is a complee r-uniform hypergraph on l 1 verices. Thus E(H) = k+( l 1 r ) = ( l 1 r )+(n l+1)k. If n > l, by Lemma., H is (k,l)-edge-maximal. By inducionon n, assume E(H ) ( l 1 r )+(n l+1)k. Therefore, E(H) = F + E(H ) k+( l 1 r )+(n l+1)k = ( l 1 r )+(n l+1)k. (ii) We now assume l n. We shall prove his case by inducion on n. If n =, hen eiher n 1 = n =, or n 1 = 1 and n = n 1 by Lemma.. When n 1 = n =, hen H 1 and H are complee, and hus E(H) = ( r ) + ( r ) + k = (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r )) n Assume n 1 = 1 and n = n 1. If n = l, hen, by Lemma., H is a complee r-uniform hypergraph. By Lemma 4., ( r n 1 ) = ( 1 r ) + (n 1 r ) ( r ) + ( r ). Thus E(H) = k +( r n 1 ) k +( r ) = (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r )) n If n > l, by Lemma., H is (k,l)-edge-maximal. Assume, by inducion hypohesis, E(H ) (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n Therefore, E(H) = E(H ) +k (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n 1 (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n, he las inequaliy holds because ( 1)k ( r) ( 1)( 1 r 1 ) r ( 1 r 1 ) 0. Assume ha n >. If n 1 = 1, hen n = n 1. By inducion assumpion, E(H ) (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n Thus E(H) = E(H ) +k (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n 1 (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n So we assume n 1. Claim. E(H i ) (n i 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n i for i {1,}. If V(H i ) l,henbyinducionassumpion,wehave E(H i ) (n i 1)k (( 1)k ( r )) n i If V(H i ) l 1, hen by Lemma., H i is a complee r-uniform hypergrpah. Thus, by Lemma 4.1 (i), E(H i ) = ( n i r ) (n i 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n i By his claim, we have E(H) = E(H 1 ) + E(H ) +k (n 1 1)k (( 1)k ( r )) n 1 +(n 1)k (( 1)k ( r )) n = (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r))( n 1 + n ) (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n 1+n (By ( 1)k ( r) 0) = (n 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n (iii) We hen assume n l = a +1. By inducion on n, we will prove his case. If n = l, hen eiher n 1 = 1,n = n 1or n 1 n n. When n 1 = 1 and n = n 1 = l 1, hen H is complee by Lemma.. Since ( l 1 r ) = ( 1 r ) +(l 1 r ) = ( 1 r )+(a 1 r ) ( a r ) +(a r ) 10
(by Lemma 4.), we have E(H) = E(H ) + k = k + ( r n 1 ) k + ( a r) = (n a + 1)k + ( a r ) (( 1)k ( r )) n a When n 1 n l, by Lemma., boh H 1 and H are complee. Since n 1 n/ = a, we have ( n 1 r )+(n r ) (a r )+(a r ) by Lemma 4.. Thus E(H) = E(H 1 ) + E(H ) +k = ( n 1 r )+(n r )+k k+(a r ) = (n a+1)k+(a r ) (( 1)k ( r )) n a Thus we assume n > l. If n 1 = 1, hen n = n 1 l. By inducion assumpion, E(H ) (n a + 1)k + ( a r ) (( 1)k ( r )) n a Thus E(H) = E(H ) + k (n a+1)k+( a r ) (( 1)k ( r )) n a (n a+1)k+( a r ) (( 1)k ( r )) n a So we assume n 1 and consider hree cases in he following. Case 1. n 1 l. By inducion assumpion, we have E(H i ) (n i a+1)k+( a r ) (( 1)k ( r )) n i a for i = 1,. By seing n o be a in Lemma 4.1 (i), we have ( a r ) (a 1)k (( 1)k ( r )) a Thus E(H) = E(H 1 ) + E(H ) +k (n 1 a+1)k +( a r) (( 1)k ( r)) n 1 a +(n a+1)k +( a r) (( 1)k ( r)) n a (n 1 a+1)k +( a r) (( 1)k ( r)) n 1 a +(n a+1)k+((a 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) a ) (( 1)k ( r)) n a Case. n 1 < l and n l. (n a+1)k +( a r ) (( 1)k ( r )) n a By n 1 < l and n l, we have H 1 is complee and H 1 is k-edge-maximal by Lemma.. By inducion assumpion, E(H ) (n a+1)k +( a r ) (( 1)k ( r )) n a Seing n o be n 1 in Lemma 4.1 (i), we have ( n 1 r ) (n 1 1)k (( 1)k ( r )) n 1 by n 1. Thus E(H) = E(H 1 ) + E(H ) +k Case 3. n 1 n < l. ( n 1 r )+(n a+1)k +( a r) (( 1)k ( r)) n a (n 1 1)k (( 1)k ( r)) n 1 +(n a+1)k +( a r) (( 1)k ( r)) n a (n a+1)k +( a r ) (( 1)k ( r )) n a By n 1 n < l, we obain ha boh H 1 and H are complee by Lemma.. If n 1 a, hen by seing n o be n i in Lemma 4.1 (ii), we have ( n i r ) (n i a)k+( a r ) (( 1)k ( r )) n i a for i = 1,. Thus E(H) = E(H 1 ) + E(H ) +k = ( n 1 r )+(n r )+k (n 1 a)k +( a r) (( 1)k ( r)) n 1 a +(n a)k+( a r) (( 1)k ( r)) n a (n a+1)k +( a r) (( 1)k ( r)) n a 11
If n 1 a, hen n = n n 1 a n 1. By seing n o be n and a o be a n 1 in Lemma 4.1 (ii), we have ( n r ) (n 1+n a)k+( a n 1 r ) (( 1)k ( r )) n 1+n a Togeher wih ( n 1 ) ( a r ) by Lemma 4., we have r )+(a n 1 r E(H) = E(H 1 ) + E(H ) +k = ( n 1 r )+( n r )+k ( n 1 r )+(n 1 +n a)k +( a n 1 r ) (( 1)k ( r)) n 1+n a (n a+1)k +( a r) (( 1)k ( r)) n a Therefore, he proof for (iii) of Theorem 4.3 is complee. (iv) The proof for (iv) of Theorem 4.3 is similar o ha (iii) of Theorem 4.3, hus we omi he proof here. Remark. For l n <, he sar-like-(k,l) hypergraphs in MSH(n;k,l,r) show ha he bound given in Theorem 4.3 (i) is bes possible. Hypergraphs consruced in Definiion 3 [10] illusrae ha he bound given in Theorem 4.3 (ii) is bes possible. The following example will show ha bounds given in Theorem 4.3 (iii) and (iv) are also bes possible. Definiion 5. Le k,,r be inegers such ha > r >, k = ( 1 r 1 ) and kr. Assume n and l are inegers saisfying n = l+p and l +, where p 0. Le a = l and b = l Then a,b +1. Le H 0 be a r-uniform hypergraph obained from he disjoin union of Ka r and Kr b by adding k edges joining Ka r and Kr b. Le H be a sar-like r-uniform hypergraph wih he nucleus H 0 and p K r -saellies, adding k edges from each saellie o he nucleus such ha (i) each verex in he saellie adjacen o some added edge (we can do his by kr ); (ii) no all of he added k edges are inciden wih he same complee subhypergraph Ka r or Kr b. Theorem 4.4. Le H be a r-uniform hypergraph consruced in Definiion 5. Then H is (k,l)- edge-maximal. Proof. By definiion, here is no subhypergraph H in H such ha V(H ) l and κ (H ) k + 1. We will prove he heorem by inducion on p. If p = 0, hen V(H) = l. Since κ (Ka) r = ( a 1 r 1 ) ( r 1 ) > k and κ (Kb r) = (b 1 r 1 ) ( r 1 ) > k, he only edge-cu wih k edges of H is hese edges connecing Ka r and Kb r. For any e E(Hc ), we have e E H c[v(ka),v(k r b r)]. Thus every edge-cu of H +e has cardinaliy a leas k+1, ha is, κ (H +e) k+1. Thus H is (k, l)-edge-maximal. Now suppose p 1. We assume ha each hypergraph consruced in Definiion 5 wih less han l + p verices is (k,l)-edge-maximal. In he following, we will show ha each H in Definiion 5 wih l + p verices is also (k, l)-edge-maximal. On he conrary, assume ha here is an edge e E(H c ) such ha H + e conains no subhypergraph H such ha V(H ) l and κ (H ) k + 1. Le F be an edge-cu in H +e wih cardinaliy a mos k. By Definiion 5 (i), we have δ(h) k +1. By (1) in page 4 and Definiion 5 (ii), we obain ha edge-cus in H+e wih cardinaliy a mos k are hese k edges joining one saellie o he nucleus. Thus here is a componen, say H 1, of H F, such ha H 1 is he hypergraph obained from H by deleing one saellie and e H1 c. By inducion assumpion, H 1 +e conains a subhypergraph H 1 such ha V(H 1 ) l and κ (H 1 ) > k. Bu 1
