1 Extraction of V cb from two-boy haronic B ecays arxiv: v [hep-ph] 10 May 018 Noriaki Kitazawa 1, Kyo-suke Masukawa an Yuki Sakai 3 Department of Physics, Tokyo Metropolitan University, Hachioji, Tokyo , Japan Abstract We propose a metho of extracting the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V cb from two-boy haronic ecay processes of B DK with precisely etermine form factors of B meson semi-leptonic ecays. The amplitue M( B 0 D + K ) which oes not inclue the effect of haronic final state interactions can be theoretically evaluate by using factorization an form factors of semi-leptonic B ecays. We can obtain all the amplitues in an isospin relation A(B D 0 K ) = A( B 0 D + K ) + A( B 0 D 0 K0 ) incluing the effect of haronic final state interactions as well as V cb using the experimental ata of branching fractions of these three processes with a truncation of the states which contribute to the haronic final state interactions. The extracte value of V cb is (37±6) The ecay processes of B DK an B D K can also be use in the same way an the extracte values of V cb are (41 ± 7) 10 3 an (4 ± 9) 10 3, respectively. This metho becomes possible by virtue of recent precise eterminations of the form factors of semi-leptonic B ecays. The uncertainties of V cb by this metho are expecte to be reuce by the results of future B-factory experiments an lattice calculations. 1 noriaki.kitazawa@tmu.ac.jp masukawa-kyosuke@e.tmu.ac.jp 3 sakai-yuki1@e.tmu.ac.jp
2 1 Introuction The precise etermination of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements [1, ] is one of the approaches to test the Stanar Moel an to search the physics beyon the Stanar Moel. The Stanar Moel preicts the unitarity relation of CKM matrix VibV i = 0 (1) i=u,c,t which gives a triangle in a complex plane. The existence of the physics beyon the Stanar Moel may violate this relation. The sies an angles of this triangle will be precisely measure using various ecay processes of B mesons in future B-factories [3, 4]. In this work we focus on the etermination of V cb. There are mainly two methos to extract the value of V cb from semi-leptonic B meson. The metho using inclusive ecay ata gives V cb = (4.00 ± 0.65) 10 3 [5], an the metho using exclusive ecay ata gives V cb = (38.71 ± 0.75) 10 3 [6]. Though the ifference of these values are within 3.3σ, it is a problem in unerstaning non-perturbative physics of QCD. 1 In fact, it has been pointe out that the proper parameterization of form factors is important [8, 9]. In orer to analyze exclusive ecay processes B D ( ) lν with a small amount of ata, the Caprini-Lellouch-Neubert (CLN) parameterization of form factors [10] is precise enough. However, with much more ata recently provie by Belle collaboration, not only q -istributions but also angular-istributions [11], the Boy-Grinstein-Lebe (BGL) parameterization of form factor [1] is better than the CLN parametrization, because the CLN parametrization may inclue about 10% errors from the absence of O(1/m c,b ) corrections [9]. Since the accuracy of recent lattice QCD results [13, 14] is typically of the orer of 1%, we nee to use theoretical frameworks with corresponingly high precisions. In this work we inten to provie another metho to extract V cb, which may give new information to the above conflict in future. We propose that the haronic ecays of B mesons, especially two-boy ecays of B DK, B DK an B D K, can be use to extract precise value of V cb in future. The amplitue M( B 0 D + K ) which oes not inclue the effects of haronic final state interactions can be theoretically evaluate by using the factorization, the form factors of semi-leptonic B ecays an ecay constant of K meson. The form factors of semi-leptonic B ecays are precisely etermine by the latest Belle ata [11, 15] an the latest lattice QCD results [13, 14] with the BGL parameterizations in [8]. The isospin symmetry provies a relation A(B D 0 K ) = A( B 0 D + K ) + A( B 0 D 0 K0 ) () incluing the effects of haronic final state interactions. We can extract these three amplitues as well as the value of V cb by using the amplitue M( B 0 D + K ) an the experimental values of three branching fractions B(B D 0 K ), B( B 0 D + K ) an B( B 0 D 0 K0 ) in [16]. In this proceure we nee to truncate the states which contribute final state interactions: not incluing all the possible states, but incluing only two-boy DK states. The processes of B DK an B D K can also be use in the same way. For B D K, we use the form factor obtaine by the CLN parameterization with latest ata by Belle collaboration [11]. We emphasize that this metho becomes possible only with recent precise etermination of all the form factors of semi-leptonic B ecay. More precise experimental ata of the branching 1 It has been pointe out that this problem can not be solve by New Physics [7]. 1

This metho can be unerstoo as an intermeiate approach between inclusive an exclusive etermination of V cb, since it requires to use several exclusive B-ecay moes. It may be possible that this metho will play an important role in the problem of V cb eterminations with the results of future B-factory experiments an future precise lattice calculations, if the valiity of the truncation of the states in final state interactions is establishe. In other wors, once the value of V cb is precisely etermine with semi-leptonic ecays without any conflicts, this metho will provie useful information to unerstan the final state interactions in two-boy haronic B ecays. In the next section we investigate the amplitues of B DK processes in etail, an propose a proceure to extract the value of V cb. We also show that the same proceure applies to the processes of B DK an B D K. In section 3 we provie the numerical analyses of extracting the value of V cb from two-boy haronic B ecays by our proceure. In section 4 we provie a summary an iscussion. Two-boy haronic ecays of B mesons Consier the haronic two-boy ecay processes B M 1 M, where M 1 an M inicate D mesons an K or π mesons, respectively. The quark-level Feynman iagrams of these ecays are classifie into four topological types [17, 18]. The amplitues from the iagrams corresponing to each topological type are calle as follows. (1) Tree amplitues T : the iagrams have b c weak current with the light egrees of freeom as spectator antiquarks of B an M1 mesons, an the W boson ecays into the light quark-antiquark pairs which constitute M meson (see Fig.1). () Color-suppresse amplitues C: the W boson ecays into the light quark-antiquark pairs, an the antiquark is inclue in M 1 meson as the spectator of c quark, an the quark constitutes M meson with the light egrees of freeom in B meson (see Fig.). (3) Exchange amplitues E: the exchange of the W boson changes the flavor of spectator of

For example, B, M 1 an M meson are B, D an K 0, respectively. s c K 0 D B, an light quark-antiquark pair creation from gluons completes two mesons (see Fig.3). (4) W-annihilation amplitues A: the B meson ecays to a W boson an the W boson ecays into a charm antiquark an a light quark, an they become constituents of M 1 an M with a light quark an an light antiquark from gluons, respectively (see Fig.4). In this paper we o not consier the process which contains the contribution of A, since it oes not inclue V cb an it is rather relevant to V ub. In table 1 we summarize all the haronic two-boy ecays of B0 an B mesons, which inclue b c transition, an the topologies of corresponing amplitues. In general several iagrams with ifferent topologies contribute to the amplitues for each ecay process. We see that the amplitue of B 0 D + K consists of a single iagram of topology T. The penguin iagrams (see Fig.5) contribute only to the amplitue of B DD. For example, the amplitue of B0 D + Ds consists of T with a pollution by a penguin iagram. Until the size of the contribution of the penguin iagram is clarifie, we can not use B 0 D + Ds to extract V cb precisely. b B 0 { W u, c, t s c c D s D + Figure 5: Penguin iagram. Note that the ecay moe B 0 D + K is the only moe which is escribe by the iagram of Tree topology only. The contributions of penguin iagrams are also liste. We focus on the two-boy ecay B 0 D + K which is escribe only by the iagram of topology T. The effective weak Hamiltonian [19] for the ecay is H eff = η EW V cb V us [C 1 (µ)o 1 (µ) + C (µ)o (µ)] + h.c., (3) where η EW is the electroweak correction which represents the effects of short-istance QED correction. The factors C 1, are the Wilson coefficients an O 1, are the current-current operators: O 1 = c α γ µ (1 γ 5 )b β s β γ µ (1 γ 5 )u α, (4) O = c α γ µ (1 γ 5 )b α s β γ µ (1 γ 5 )u β, (5) where α an β are color inices. The amplitue is given by the matrix element A( B 0 D + K ) = η EW V cb V usa 1 (µ) D + (p )K (p K ) [ cγ µ (1 γ 5 )b][ sγ µ (1 γ 5 )u] B 0 (p), (6) where p, p an p K are 4-momenta of B 0, D + an K, respectively. The momentum p K satisfies q = (p p ) = p K. The factor a 1(µ) = C (µ) + C 1 (µ)/3 represents the effects of shortistance QCD correction incluing short-istance non-factorizable QCD effects. The amplitue A( B 0 D + K ) inclues also the effects of non-factorizable haronic final state interactions (or rescattering effects) which are non-perturbative QCD effects. Now, we introuce the amplitue M( B 0 D + K ) which oes not inclue the effects of haronic final state interactions. The amplitue is given by factorizing the matrix element in eq.(6), because only the iagram of topology T contributes. The final state is written by two inepenent asymptotic states of D + an K mesons, because we have temporarily neglecte the effects of final state interactions, or long-istance non-factorizable QCD effects. The amplitue is written as M( B 0 D + K ) = η EW V cb V usa 1 (µ) D + (p ) cγ µ (1 γ 5 )b B 0 (p) K (p K ) sγ µ (1 γ 5 )u 0. (7) 4
6 The B D part of the matrix element is given by D(p ) cγ µ (1 γ 5 )b B(p) = f + (q )(p + p ) µ + f (q )(p p ) µ, (8) where f ± (q ) are form factors of semi-leptonic ecay of B 0. Another matrix element is escribe as 0 ūγ µ (1 γ 5 )s K(p K ) = ip Kµ f K ±, (9) where f K ± = ± 0.4MeV [16] is the ecay constant of K ± mesons. The absolute value of the amplitue is written as where M( B 0 D + K ) = η EW V cb Vus a 1 (µ)(m B0 m D +)f K ±f 0(m K ±), (10) f 0 (q ) = f + (q ) + m B f (q ) (11) m D an the function of f 0 (q ) is precisely etermine in [8] for all possible q region. Notice that this amplitue epens only on one form factor f 0 (q ). If we coul neglect the effect of haronic final state interactions, the value of V cb coul be straightforwarly extracte from the ata of the ecay rate in [16], since the ecay rate is simply escribe as q Γ( B 0 D + K ) no FSI = p M( 8πm B 0 D + K ), (1) B where p = 1 {m B0 (m D + + m K ) m {m B0 (m D + m K ). (13) B0 We obtain the value of V cb = (3.0±1.9) 10 3 which is inconsistent with the values etermine by the inclusive an exclusive methos with semi-leptonic ecays. This result inicates the failure of naive factorization an shows that the effect of haronic final state interactions can not be ignore an it is important to extract V cb from haronic two-boy B ecays. In orer to consier the effect of haronic final state interactions, we introuce a relation between ecay amplitues which follows from isospin symmetry. The amplitues of B D 0 K, B0 D + K an B 0 D 0 K0 are relate by isospin symmetry as A(B D 0 K ) = A( B 0 D + K ) + A( B 0 D 0 K0 ). (14) We expect that this relation shoul be satisfie within 1% accuracy, because the isospin breaking effect shoul be proportional to (m m u )/Λ QCD 0.0 or α/π We can represent this relation as a triangle on a complex plane (see Fig.6). The isospin ecomposition of these amplitues are given by A(B D 0 K ) = A 1 = A 1 e iδ 1, (15) A( B 0 D + K ) = 1 (A 1 + A 0 ) = 1 ( A 1 e iδ 1 + A 0 e iδ 0 ) 1 ( A 1 + A 0 e iδs )e iδ 1, (16) A( B 0 D 0 K0 ) = 1 (A 1 A 0 ) = 1 ( A 1 e iδ 1 A 0 e iδ 0 ) = 1 ( A 1 A 0 e iδs )e iδ 1, (17) where δ 0 an δ 1 are phases by the effect of haronic final state interactions of isospin 0 an 1 channels, respectively, an δ s = δ 0 δ 1 is the physical strong phase. If there is no physical 5

Non-zero strong phases of δ 0 an δ 1 mean non-zero area of this triangle. effect of haronic final state interactions, δ s = 0 an the triangle of Fig.6 collapses. In general neglecting final state interactions results not only vanishing phases of δ 0 an δ 1, but also changing the magnitues of A 0 an A 1. If we truncate the states which contribute to the final state interactions by consiering only two-boy DK states, the relation M( B 0 D + K ) = A( B 0 D + K ) δ1,0 =0 = 1 ( A 1 + A 0 ) (18) is satisfie, because for each isospin channel there is only one final state. If we inclue further the states like DKππ, for example, the effect of final state interactions can not be represente only by simple phases an the magnitues of A 0 an A 1 are also affecte [0]. This truncation of the states, or neglecting inelastic final state interactions, is the only theoretical assumption in our metho, except for isospin symmetry. Once the formula of eq.(18) has been accepte, we can extract V cb Vus from the values of A 0 an A 1 which, as well as cos δ s, can be extracte from the measurements of three ecay rates. Now we are going to extract V cb from the experimental values of ecay fractions of corresponing three ecay moes. From eqs.(15), (16) an (17) the ratios of ecay fractions can be escribe as R 1 B( B 0 D + K ) B(B D 0 K ) = K 1 4 R B( B 0 D 0 K0 ) B(B D 0 K ) = K 4 ( 1 + ( 1 A 0 A 1 A 0 A 1 where the coefficients K 1 an K are kinematical factors of K 1 = τ B 0m B τ B m B0 K = τ B 0m B τ B m B0 cos δ s + cos δ s + A 0 A 1 A 0 A 1 ), (19) ), (0) [1 (md +/m B0 + m K /m B0) ][1 (m D +/m B0 m K /m B0) ] [1 (md 0/m B + m K /m B ) ][1 (m D 0/m B m K /m B ) ], (1) [1 (md +/m B0 + m K0/m B0) ][1 (m D +/m B0 m K0/m B0) ] [1 (md 0/m B + m K /m B ) ][1 (m D 0/m B m K /m B ) ]. () Eqs.(18), (19) an (0) are use to escribe A 0 an A 1 in terms of M( B 0 D + K ) as A 0 = 1 + H 1 M( B 0 D + K ), (3) A 1 = 1 + H M( B 0 D + K ), (4) 6
8 where H = A 0 A 1 = (R 1 + R ) 1, (5) an R i R i /K i with i = 1,. From eqs.(19) an (0) cos δ s is escribe only by irectly observable quantities as cos δ s = R 1 R H. (6) From eq.(4) the absolute value of the amplitue A(B D 0 K ) = A 1 is given by A(B D 0 K ) = V cb Vus M 1 + H, (7) where M = M( B 0 D + K ) V cb V us = η EW a 1 (µ)(m B0 m D +)f K ±f 0(m K ±). (8) is a known quantity. Finally, we get V cb V us from the above equation an the value of ecay rate Γ(B D 0 K ) as V cb V us = 4πm B Γ(B D 0 K ) 1 + H, (9) [1 (r1 + r ) ][1 (r 1 r ) ] M where r 1 = m D 0/m B an r = m K /m B. This equation is use to extract V cb Vus from experimental ata. For B DK an B D K, we can extract V cb Vus in the same way. The only major ifferences are the concrete forms of the amplitues M( B 0 D + K ) an M( B 0 D + K ). For B 0 D + K, M( B 0 D + K ) = η EW V cb V usa 1 (µ) D + (p ) cγ µ (1 γ 5 )b B 0 (p) K (p K ) sγ µ (1 γ 5 )u 0 (30) with the factorization proceure. The first matrix element in the amplitue is given in eq.(8). The secon matrix element in the amplitue is simply escribe as 0 ūγ µ (1 γ 5 )s K (p K ) = m K f K ±ɛ µ (p K ), (31) where f K ± an ɛ µ (p K ) are the ecay constant an the polarization vector of K ± mesons, respectively. The polarization vector ɛ µ (p K ) satisfies ɛ(p K ) p K = 0. Then, we have M( B 0 D + K ) = η EW V cb V us a 1 (µ)m B0p f K ±f + (m K ±). (3) Notice that this amplitue epens only on the form factor f + (q ) instea of f 0 (q ) in case of B DK. For B 0 D + K, the amplitue is given by M( B 0 D + K ) = η EW V cb V usa 1 (µ) D + (p ) cγ µ (1 γ 5 )b B 0 (p) K (p K ) sγ µ (1 γ 5 )u 0 (33) 7

Even though there are many form factors, we have a simple expression as M( B 0 D + K ) = η EW V cb Vus a 1 (µ)m B0p f K ±A 0 (m K ±). (35) Notice that this amplitue epens on only the form factor A 0 (q ). 3 Numerical analyses an results In our analysis we use the experimental ata, masses an branching fractions in [16] an the form factors f 0,+ (q ) in [8]. We use the value of the electroweak correction η EW = in [] an the short-istance QCD correction a 1 (µ) = at leaing orer with Λ (5) = 5 MS MeV an µ = 4.0 GeV [19]. The accuracy of a 1 (µ) is of the orer of 1%. We o not consier the effect of isospin symmetry breaking expecting that the effect is very small within 1%. From B DK using eq.(9) an the experimental ata in Table, we obtain V cb = (37 ± 6) 10 3 an cos δ s = 0.60 ± Notice that the value of V cb is consistent with that etermine by both the inclusive an exclusive methos with semi-leptonic ecays. The uncertainty of V cb is about 30% which is ominate by the experimental errors of the ratios, B( B 0 D + K )/B(B D 0 K ) an B( B 0 D 0 K0 )/B(B D 0 K ). Table 3 shows sources of uncertainty of V cb. We fin that the precise measurements of branching fractions, B( B 0 D + K ), B( B 0 D 0 K0 ) an B( B D 0 K ), play an important role in the precise etermination of V cb in our metho. We note that the value of V cb is etermine by using the form factor which oes not employ the CLN parameterization but the BGL parameterization. 8

To compare the strong phase shift cos δ s with the one in the previous work [17], we convert cos δ s to their cos δ c, where δ c is efine as the phase ifference between A( B 0 D + K ) an A( B 0 D 0 K0 ). Our result cos δ c = 0.43 ± 0.16 is consistent with that in [17] within errors. From B DK we can obtain the value of V cb an the strong phase cos δ s in the same way. Using eq.(3) an the experimental ata in Table 4, we obtain V cb = (41 ± 7) 10 3 an cos δ s = 0.8 ± 0.0. This value of V cb is also consistent with both the inclusive an exclusive results. Notice that cos δ s is larger (δ s is smaller) than that in B DK. This suggests that the effect of haronic final state interactions between a pseuo-scalar meson an a vector mesons is less important than that in case of two pseuo-scalar mesons. The corresponing value of cos δ c = 0.07 ± 0.8 is also consistent with that in [17] within errors. We have use the form factor with the BGL parameterization in [8]. The ecay constant of charge vector meson f K ± is etermine by the branching ratio of τ K ν τ [3]. Since the branching fraction is escribe as B(τ K ν τ ) = m ( ) ( τ V us τ τ m K 8π ±f K 1 m τ 1 + m ) K ±, (36) ± m K m τ by using the measure values of B(τ K ν τ ) = (1.0±0.07) 10, m τ = ±0.1MeV an τ τ = (90.3 ± 0.5) s [16] we obtain f K ± = 05.6 ± 6.0MeV. From B D K, in the same way, we obtain V cb = (4 ± 9) 10 3 an cos δ s = 0.80 ± 0.19 using eq.(35) an the experimental ata in Table 5. The corresponing value cos δ c = 0.63±0.4 is also consistent with that in [17] within errors. The form factor A 0 (q ) is not given by the BGL parameterization, because there are no experimental ata of the ifferential ecay rate of B D τν τ an also no lattice QCD calculations for the form factor. We have to use the form factor A 0 which is given by the CLN parameterization instea of the BGL parameterization by fully utilizing heavy quark symmetry. The CLN parameterization base on the heavy quark effective theory gives A 0 (q ) = R 0(w) h A1 (w), (37) R D where R D = m B m D /(m B + m D ), h A1 (w) = h A1 (1)[1 8ρ D z + (53ρ D 15)z (31ρ D 91)z3 ], (38) R 0 (w) = R 0 (1) 0.11(w 1) (w 1), (39) an w an z are kinetic variables efine as w = m B + m D q, (40) m B m D 1 + w z =. (41) 1 + w + The value of h A1 (1) has been obtaine by the unquenche lattice QCD calculation [4]. The value of R 0 (1) can be obtaine by using the relation base on heavy quark symmetry [5, 6] R 3 (1) R (1)(1 r) + r[r 0 (1)(1 + r) ] (1 r) = 0.97, (4) if we know the value of R (1), where r = m D /m B. The values of R (1) an ρ D are etermine by Belle collaboration [11] from semi-leptonic B 0 D + l ν l ecay as R (1) = 0.91 ± 0.08 an ρ D = 1.17 ± In this way we obtain the value R 0(1) = 1.08 with the uncertainty of 10% consiering unknown O(1/m c) corrections. Our results are summarize in Table 6. 4 Conclusions We have propose a metho of extracting the value of V cb from haronic two-boy B meson ecays. The recent precise etermination of the form factor f 0 (q ) of semi-leptonic B meson ecays in [8] allows us to perform this metho with B DK ecay processes. The only theoretical assumption in our metho, except for isospin symmetry, is that the effect of inelastic final state interactions is small. Specifically, we have neglecte the possible states 10
12 except for DK two-boy states in final state interactions. The quantitative investigation of this truncation is a future work which belongs to the efforts to unerstan non-perturbative QCD physics in haronic ecays. The effect of isospin symmetry breaking is not inclue, since it is negligibly small in the present precision of experimental ata. In future when the errors of branching fractions will be smaller an close to 1% accuracy as well as relevant form factors, we nee to inclue the effect of isospin symmetry breaking. We have use form factors of semileptonic B meson ecays which are etermine by using the BGL parameterization in [8, 9] for the extraction of V cb from B DK an B DK. In the extraction of V cb from B D K we ha to use the CLN parameterization an heavy quark symmetry to obtain the form factor A 0 (q ), which may contain possibly large uncertainties from higher orer corrections in heavy quark expansions. Our final results are summarize in Table 6. The extracte values of V cb have about 30% uncertainties an they are consistent with the values from both inclusive an exclusive semileptonic ecays within errors. These consistent results show that our metho is reasonable at least in the present precision. The experimental errors of the haronic branching fractions, in particular B( B 0 D 0 K0 ), B( B 0 D 0 K 0 ) an B( B 0 D 0 K0 ), ominate the uncertainty of V cb. We can expect that the uncertainty becomes smaller by the results of future experiments an lattice calculations. It may be possible that this metho will be the thir one competing conventional an establishe methos from inclusive or exclusive semi-leptonic B ecays, if the problem of inelastic final state interaction is appropriately treate. We have also examine the effects of haronic final state interactions in two-boy haronic ecays. The extracte strong phase shifts are consistent with the previous works of [17, 7, 8]. The strong phase in B DK is larger than that in B DK an B D K which involve the vector meson in final states (see Table 6). It is known in general that the final state interaction is more important for B P P ecays than B P V ecays, where P an V inicate pseuoscalar an vector mesons. Here, we must note that the efinition of our phases are not exactly the same in [17, 7, 8], an they are coincie in the limit of negligible contribution of inelastic final state interactions. This fact will give a way to investigate the magnitue of the effect of inelastic final state interactions in future. It may be possible that we can apply this metho to extract the value of V ub from haronic two-boy ecays of B mesons, if necessary form factors will be available by future experimental an lattice ata.
