arxiv:math/ v1 [math.at] 5 Feb The toric cobordism group A.Mozgova February 10, 2008 Abstract The theory of oriented toric cobordisms is a special case of the cobordism theory with group action. The objects of the theory are smooth oriented manifolds, on which there is a free smooth action of the compact Lie group T 2 = S 1 S 1. In this paper the third group of oriented toric cobordism Ω or 3 (T 2 is calculated geometrically. 1 Preliminaries A torus will always mean a 2-torus T 2 = S 1 S 1. The quotient M ϕ = T 2 I/(x, 0 (ϕ(x, 1 for ϕ Aut T 2 is a 2-torus bundle over the circle. We say that two bundle structures are isomorphic if there is a homeomorphism of their total spaces, preserving the fibers. Any 2-torus bundle over a circle is isomorphic to M ϕ for some ϕ. It is known that M ϕ is homeomorphic to M ψ if and only if ϕ is conjugate to ±ψ ±1 in Aut T 2 = SL(2, Z. (See [5] for a proof. Two bundle structures with the same fiber on a same total space are homotopic in the total space if the inclusion maps of the corresponding fibers are homotopic. (In fact, we can say isotopic instead of homotopic, since the fibers are obviously embedded in the total space. Lemma 1 For ϕ ±id, M ϕ admits a unique torus bundle structure up to an isotopy. Proof. In the notation M ϕ, it is understood that the structure of a torus bundle is fixed. We have to prove that for any other torus bundle structure on M ϕ its fiber is isotopic to the fiber of the fixed structure. For any structure of torus bundle on M ϕ, its fiber T is incompressible in M ϕ. (Since π 2 (S 1 = 0, it follows from the exact homotopy sequence of the fiber bundle, that 0 f 0 f 1 Z Z π1 (M ϕ Z 0. 1 The author is grateful to the French government for financial support. 1
( 1 n Now we use the following fact: for ϕ not conjugate to ± in SL(2, Z, each connected incompressible surface ( in M ϕ is isotopic to the fiber ([3], p n For the case of ϕ conjugate to ± we have an associated Seifert structure on M ϕ (without singular fibers because the homeomorphism ± ( 1 n maps the parallel of the torus onto itself, and these parallels are the fibers of a Seifert structure. (The fibers of the torus bundle structure are unions of fibers of the associated Seifert structure. Thus the lemma follows from the uniqueness (up to an isotopy of Seifert structure on M ϕ for ϕ = ± ( 1 n for n 0 (see, for example, [1]. See also [5] for another proof. In fact, M ±id admits infinitely many non-isotopic torus bundle structures, as there are many associated Seifert structures. For example, on M id = T 3 there are at least 3 obvious non-isotopic structures, and 2 non-isotopic structures of torus bundle on M id = K 2 S 1 (twisted product of the Klein bottle with the circle. 2 Toric cobordisms Let G:=SL(2,Z and let G be its commutator subgroup. Theorem 1 The 3-manifold M ϕ is the boundary of a 4-manifold M 4 fibered by tori over an oriented surface, if and only if ϕ G (the bundle structure on M ϕ is the restriction of the bundle structure on M 4. Proof. if. Let ϕ = g i=1 [ϕ 2i 1, ϕ 2i ] and let B be a surface of genus g, obtained by glueing the faces of 4g-polyhedra as in Figure 1. After glueing we get 2g curves and a Figure 1: Glueing of the surface from the polyhedra marked point on the surface. The surface B o := B\ D 2 is obtained by cutting out the neighborhood of the marked point. A T 2 -bundle over B is constructed 2
by multiplying the disk in the Figure 2 by T 2 and glueing I a T 2 to I a 1 T 2 as follows: (t, x (t, ϕ a (x. Figure 2: Glueing of the bundle The result of the glueing will be denoted by M 4. The restriction of the torus bundle structure of M 4 to its boundary is a torus fiber bundle over the circle. Hence, it is isomorphic to M ψ for some ψ G. We now see from the pictures that this ψ is given by ψ = ϕ a1 ϕ b1 ϕ 1 a 1 ϕ 1 b 1 ϕ a2 ϕ b2 ϕ 1 a 2 ϕ 1 b 2...ϕ ag ϕ bg ϕ 1 a g ϕ 1 b g = g [ϕ ai ; ϕ bi ] G. only if. Suppose there exists a 4-manifold M 4 fibered by tori over a surface B with B = S 1. We glue the boundary of B to a disk, then take a marked point in the disk and curves corresponding to the generators of π 1 (B, as in Figure 3. i=1 Figure 3: Generators on the handle Let us glue I a T 2 to I a 1 T 2 by the mapping of (t, x (t, ϕ a (t(x; here ϕ a (t AutT 2 for each t. We obtain a map ϕ a (t : I SL(2, Z. 3
For each t the fibers over t are glued by a matrix from SL(2, Z, which depends continuously on t. Since SL(2, Z is discrete, the matrices are constant for all t I. Reasoning as in the if part, we obtain an isomorphism of fiber bundles: M 4 = M g i=1 [ϕa i ;ϕ b i ]. Theorem 2 Let ϕ 1,...,ϕ n be elements of G. The disjoint union M ϕ1... Mϕn is the boundary of a 4-manifold M 4 which is fibered by tori over an oriented surface, if and only if n i=1 ϕ i G. Proof. We will consider the case n = 2; the case n > 2 can be obtained by generalizing in an obvious way. Taking a simple curve joining the boundary components and cutting the fiber bundles along I T 2 which lies over this curve (see Figure 4, we arrive at the situation of Theorem 1 for ϕ = fϕ 1 f 1 ϕ 2 (here f is the glueing homeomorphism by which the original bundle can be obtained from the cut bundle. To finish the proof, we need the following Fact 1 fϕ 1 f 1 ϕ 2 G ϕ 1 ϕ 2 G, which follows immediately from fϕ 1 f 1 ϕ 2 = fϕ 1 f 1 ϕ 1 1 ϕ 1ϕ 2 = [f; ϕ 1 ]ϕ 1 ϕ 2. Remark. Arguing as in the proofs of Theorems 1 and 2, we get the following Figure 4: Cutting of the bundle statements for fiber bundles over a non-oriented surface: Let F be a subgroup of G, generated by the squares of elements of G. Theorem 3 The 3-manifold M ϕ is the boundary of a 4-manifold M 4, fibered by tori over a non-oriented surface, if and only if ϕ F. Theorem 4 Let ϕ 1,...,ϕ n be elements of G as above. The disjoint union M ϕ1... Mϕn is the boundary of a 4-manifold M 4, fibered by tori over a non-oriented surface, if and only if n i=1 ϕ i F. 4
3 The group of toric cobordisms We follow Stong s conventions in our use of the terms bordism and cobordism [2]. Let us consider oriented 3-manifolds fibered by T 2 over compact oriented 1-manifolds (that is, over the unions of oriented circles. We introduce the following equivalence relation ω between them: M 1 ω M2 a 4-manifold M 4 fibered by tori such that M 4 = M 1 M2 and the torus bundle structure on M i is the restriction of the structure on M 4. By M ω we will mean the ω-equivalence class of M. Definition 1 M 1, M 2 are said to be toric-cobordant if they are ω-equivalent. The set of ω-equivalence classes has a structure of an abelian group defined by M ω 1 + Mω 2 := Mω 1 M ω 2. M ω id :=. This is the group of oriented toric cobordisms Ω or 3 (T 2. Calculation of G/G. Let us use the following presentation of G: G = a, b aba = bab, (ab 4 = 1, ( ( where a =, b = (see [1]. The quotientgroup is obtained by adding the relation of commutation between the generators, thus 1 1 G/G =< a i b j >, where i = 0, 1, 2, 3, j = 0, 1, 2, in other words, G/G = Z12. Calculation of Ω or 3 (T 2. The coset bg generates G/G. It follows from Theorem 2 that M ϕ, M ψ, ϕ = ( 1 0 m 1 ( 1 0, ψ = n 1 belong to the same class of toric cobordism iff m + n 0 (mod 12. We obtain Ω T2 3 = Z 6. Acknowledgments The author is particularly grateful to Claude Hayat-Legrand, Vladimir Sharko and Heiner Zieshang for suggesting of the problem and for many fruitful discussions. 5
