1 Study of B Kππ Decays arxiv: v [hep-ex] 16 Oct 15 representing the collaboration Dept. of Physics, University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway gerald.eigen@ift.uib.no Using B B decays recorded with the detector at the PEP-II e e storage ring, we present the time-dependent CP asymmetry measurement in the radiative penguin decay mode B KS ρ(77, yielding S K S ρ =.17 ± The result is extracted from the time-dependent CP asymmetry parameters S K S π π =.14 ± and C KS π π =.39±±.±.5 measured in the neutral decay B KS π π after correcting for the dilution of K (89π in Kρ. The dilution factor D K S ρ = is determined from a study of the charged mode B K π π, which produces more signal events and is related to the neutral mode by isospin. We need a detailed knowledge of the resonance structure in the K π π mass spectrum and measure branching fractions of different resonances to Kπ and ππ final states. We also measure the branching fractions B(B K π π = (7. ± 1. ± and B(B K S π π = (4. ± The European Physical Society Conference on High Energy Physics 9 July 15 Vienna, Austria Speaker. 2 1. Introduction The V-A structure of the Standard Model (SM weak interaction produces predominantly left-handed photons in b s decays. Thus apart from m s /m b effects [1], a B ( B meson decays predominantly to a right-handed (left-handed photon. In the SM, the mixing-induced CP asymmetry in B f CP decays is expected to be small in the SM where f CP is a CP eigenstate. However, new physics processes in which opposite-helicity photons are involved may alter the SM prediction [1,, 3, 4]. Inclusive and exclusive radiative decays have been studied by [5, 6] and Belle [7, 8] in several channels. For example, the inclusive branching fraction of B(B X s = (3.4 ± [9] is in good agreement with the SM prediction of B(B X s = (3.15 ± [1]. has studied the exclusive decay B Kππ exploring the resonance structure of the Kππ system. The data sample consists of B B events recorded with the detector at the PEP II e e storage ring at SLAC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 46 fb 1. The goal consists of measuring the mixing-induced CP asymmetry parameter, S K ρ, in the B radiative decay to the CP eigenstate K S ρ, which is sensitive to right-handed photons. To accomplish this we measure the time-dependent CP asymmetry parameters S K ππ and C K ππ in the neutral decay B KS π π since S K S ρ = S K S π π D. The dilution factor D K K S ρ S ρ the amplitudes of the two-body decays ρ(77 KS, K (89 π and (Kπ π [11]: depends on [ AρK A D K S ρ = S K π A (Kπ π Re(A A ρks K π Re(A A ρks (Kπ π ] dm [ AρK A S K π A (Kπ π Re(A A ρks K π ] Re(A A ρks (Kπ π dm (1.1 Thus, we need to measure all two-body amplitudes to determine D K S ρ. For this task, we use the B K π π decay since due to higher signal yields we achieve more precise measurements and the charged mode is related to B KS π π by isospin. The Kππ final state is produced by several kaonic resonances. We extract these from a fit to the K π π mass spectrum.. Determination of the dilution factor D K S ρ using the decay B K π π We combine a high-energy photon (1.5 < E < 3.5 GeV with two charged pions and a charged kaon. The signal event selection is based on two kinematic observables, the beam-energyconstrained mass m ES = 1 4 E CM p B and the energy difference E = E B 1 E CM where E CM is the center-of-mass energy and p B,E B are momentum and energy of the B meson in the B rest frame. In addition, six event shape observables that are combined into a Fisher discriminant F [1] to separate signal from e e q q continuum background (q = u,d,s,c. We further use a likelihood ratio to discriminate against photons from π and η decays. Requiring L π (L η <.86 (.957 retains 93% (95% signal and removes 83% (87% q q and 63% (1% B B backgrounds. Using an extended unbinned maximum likelihood fit to m ES, E and F, we extract a B K π π signal yield of 441 ± events for m Kππ < 1.8 GeV/c. Using the s Plot technique [13], we extract the m Kππ, m Kπ and m ππ invariant-mass spectra. We model the m Kππ invariantmass spectrum with five resonances using coherent sums of same-spin terms ( K 1 (17K 1 (14,

Furthermore, we include a contribution from the ρ that yields a broad structure in the K π mass spectrum. We model the K (89 with a relativistic Breit- Wigner line shape, the ρ(77 with a Gounaris-Sakurai line shape [14] and the (K π with the LASS parameterization [15]. For each resonance, we account for line shape distortions above the pole mass caused by low-mass Kππ resonances. We include interference between Kπ and ππ P-wave as well as interference between Kπ S-wave and ππ P-wave. Figure 1 (right shows the m Kπ s Plot spectrum with the fit components superimposed. Table lists the branching fraction of the different resonances decaying to K π and π π. This is the first observation of the decay B K ρ and the B (Kπ π S-wave contribution. From the (K π S-wave component, we separate the K (143 resonant contribution by performing separate integration of the resonant part, the non-resonant part and the coherent sum. We find 95.6% non-resonant, 7.9% resonant and -3.51% destructive interference contributions. For the resonant contribution, we extract a branching fraction of (1.44 ± ± where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third results from secondary branching fractions. Since in the present analysis the K (143 contribution is modeled to come exclusively from B K 1 (17 K (143π, we determine the branching fraction to be B(K 1 (17 K (143π = %. This value is in good agreement with the Belle measurement [16]. Inserting the measured two-body amplitudes into Eqn (1, we obtain a dilution factor of D K S ρ = using the same mass constraints as in the B KS π π analysis, m Kππ < 1.8 GeV/c,.6 < m ππ <.9 GeV/c, m Kπ <.845 GeV/c and m Kπ >.945 GeV/c. 3. Time-dependent analysis of B K S π π The selection of the KS π π mode is the same as that for the K π π mode, except for the replacement of the K with a KS requiring m ππ m K < 11 MeV/c, a lifetime significance S of more than five standard deviations and p K l flight / p S KS K l flight >.995 where p S KS K is the K S S momentum and l flight is the vector connecting the B and K KS S decay vertices. We apply the same m Kππ, m Kπ and m ππ mass selections as for the charged mode. For most backgrounds, we use an 4
5 Argus PDF [17] for m ES, Chebychev polymomials for E and Gaussian or exponential functions for F. We optimize the selection on F to minimize statistical errors of CP parameters. We perform an extended unbinned maximum likelihood fit to extract the B KS π π signal yield along with time-dependent CP asymmetry parameters S K S ππ and C KS ππ. The likelihood function for event i is a sum over class j (signal and backgrounds in which each PDF depends on m ES, E, F and t. For most classes we can factorize the likelihood in the following way: P i j(m ES, E,F, t,σ t,q tag,c = P i j(m ES P i j( EP i j(f P i j( t,σ t ;q tag,c (3.1 where q tag = 1( 1 for B tag = B ( B and c represents the tagging category. We use six mutually exclusive tagging categories and collect all non-tagged events in a seventh category. We parametrize the proper time distribution for B K s ρ events for tagging category c by: exp[ t Psig( t,σ i t ;q tag,c = 4τ B τ B ] [ 1 1 q tag D c q tag < D > c ( Ssin( mb d t C cos( m B d t ] 8 Events/(.3 GeV/c 1 R c sig( t,σ t (3. where 8 < D > c is the average B B tagging dilution for category c and D c is the difference in D c between B and B 8 tags [18, 19]. We use the tagging algorithm and < D > c, D c values for the 6 six tagging categories from the B (c ck ( analysis 6 [19]. The seventh category of untagged events 4 is useful for the determination of the direct CP4asymmetry []. We add t background PDFs for charged B decays, B decays to flavor eigenstates, B decays to CP eigenstates as well as those for q q contributions. Figure (left shows the m ES projection of the fit. 6 .14 ± and C KS π π =.39 ±. ±.5. After correcting for D KS ρ, we measure a mixing-induced CP parameter of S K S ρ =.17 ± Our result is consistent with the Belle result [1]. Both results are consistent with zero and thus agree with the SM prediction. 4. Conclusion We observed the decays B K π π and B KS π π and measured their branching fractions. In the charged mode, we observed five kaonic resonances decaying to Kππ for which we measured fit fractions and branching fractions. We found first evidence for B K 1 (14, B K (141 and B K (14. We further determined the dilution factor D Kρ after measuring amplitudes and phases of B K (89 π, B K ρ(77 and B (K π π modes. The latter two results are first measurements. In the neutral mode, we measured the timedependent CP asymmetry parameters S K S π π and C KS π π and in turn the CP asymmetry parameter S K S ρ for the K S ρ(77 CP eigenstate. Presently, experimental uncertainties are too large to set meaningful limits on right-handed photons. This remains a task for Belle II. References [1] W. Atwood, M. Gronau and A. Soni, Phys. Rev.
