1 Hanyang University ByungGu Cheon Hanyang University Yuuji Unno Hanyang University This proceeding covers recent measurements of charmless hadronic B decays such as B + K (89)K + (89), B ωω/ωφ, B π π, B ηπ, B ρ ρ and B + KS π+ π reported from Belle, BaBar and LHCb experiments. In the B + K (89)K + (89) decay channel, Belle found a.7σ excess of signal, which correspond to the branching fraction B = ( ±.1) 1 and the longitudinal polarization fraction f L = 1.±.3±.1. In BaBar, the B ωω is measured with the B = (1. ± ) 1 and the B upper limit of B ωφ is set to.7 1 at the 9% confidence-level. Belle reports an updated measurement of B = (.9 ±.1 ±.1) 1 in the B π π and the first measurement of B = ( ) 1 7 in B ηπ. The B = (.9 ±.17 ±.9 ±.) 1 and the f L = ±.3 are precisely measured by LHCb, where the B last uncertainty is due to the B φk reference mode. Finally the difference between CP asymmetries of K π intermediate states is reported as A CP (K + π ) A CP (K + π ) =.1 ±.13 by BaBar. 2 1. Introduction The b c decays take an order of 99% of all B decays, while the others are considered as charmless and rare decays. Those charmless B decays probe dynamics of weak and strong interactions [1]. In these decays, the interference between penguin and tree diagrams can lead to the direct CP violation, and the relative weak phase of tree and penguin can also give the unitarity triangle angles in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. These allow searches for new physics from the new particles by looking for the enhanced branching fraction (B), CP asymmetry (A CP ), and so on. Analyses of Belle and BaBar used the data samples taken at the ϒ(S) resonance, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 711 fb 1 and 9 fb 1, respectively. The analysed data in LHCb corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3. fb 1 from pp collisions.. Analysis of B + K (89)K + (89) in Belle and B ωω/ωφ in BaBar The polarization puzzle for B VV decay channels has yet to be solved due to a baffling pattern in the longitudinal polarization fraction ( f L ); here, V denotes a vector meson. Many of those decay channels with the b d transition have still large uncertainties for the f L. Therefore, precise measurements of B + K (89)K + (89) and B ωω/ωφ mediated by b d transitions based on high statistics are needed to shed more light on the polarization puzzle. The B + K K + candidate is reconstructed from the subsequent decay channels of K K π + and K + K + π (KS π+ ), where K refers to the K (89) meson, and the B ωω/ωφ candidate is reconstructed from ω π + π π and φ K + K, with KS π+ π and π γγ. Charged tracks are reconstructed by using the standard particle identification criteria with additional selections such as the transverse momentum. The π candidates are reconstructed with an invariant mass requirement corresponding to about 3σ around the nominal π mass []. The KS candidates have to suffice the standard impact parameter criteria and have an invariant mass ranged from.78 GeV/c to.1 GeV/c. Selection requirements on the invariant mass of B-daughter intermediate states for K, ω, and φ are.78 GeV/c < m Kπ < 1. GeV/c,.7 GeV/c < m πππ <.8 GeV/c, and 1.9 GeV/c < m KK < 1.9 GeV/c. Two kinematic observables are defined in the form of the energy difference ( E E B E beam ) PoS(FPCP1)7 and the beam-energy constrained mass (M bc (m ES ) E 1 c beam p B c ), where E beam and E B ( p B ) are the beam energy and the energy (momentum) of the B meson candidate, respectively, in the e + e center-of-mass (CM) frame. For the K + K + π channel of B + K K +, where the E resolution is poor due to shower leakage in the electromagnetic calorimeter (ECL) [3], the modified beam constrained mass Mbc is used, which takes into account only the π direction but not also its energy. B candidates satisfy that E <.1 GeV and M ( ) bc >. GeV/c for the B + K K +, E <. GeV and m ES >. GeV/c for the B ωω/ωφ. The dominant source of background for both decay channels is the e + e q q (q {u,d,s,c}) continuum process. A neural network (NN) implemented with the NeuroBayes (NB) package [] in the B + K K + and a Fisher discriminant (F ) [] in the B ωω/ωφ are employed by combining event topology variables to suppress this background. The NN output (C NB ) is transformed into an analytic shape (C NB ) to enable its modeling with disregarding candidates having C NB <., where C NB is ranged from 1 to 1. The B B backgrounds are also taken into

(Kπ) K +, K (Kπ) + and four-body decays contribute to peaking structures for the B + K K +, while ωωπ, ωφπ, ωρπ, and ωa 1 decays contribute to them for the B ωω/ωφ. The extended unbinned maximum-likelihood fits are performed to extract both B and f L for the B + K K +, and to extract the B for the B ωω/ωφ by fixing a parameter f L =.88. These fits include seven input observables E, beam-energy constrained mass, two vector-meson invariant masses, two vector-meson helicity angles, and continuum suppression variable. In addition, for the B ωω/ωφ, a helicity angle (Φ) for each ω is provided by the polar angle of the π in the π + π rest frame with respect to the ω flight direction. The distribution of this extra fit variable, cosφ ω, is proportional to 1 cos Φ ω for signal, while nearly flat for background. PoS(FPCP1)7 Figure : (color online). 4 In the B + K K +, the fit is performed simultaneously to both channels of K + KS π+ and K + K + π. Figure 1 shows the signal-enhanced projections of seven-dimensional fit variables for the B + K K + decay channel, where the signal-enhanced regions are ranged by E <. GeV, M ( ) bc >.7 GeV/c,.83 GeV/c < m Kπ <.9 GeV/c and C NB > 3. Figure shows the signalenhanced projections of m ES (left) and E for the B ωω/ωφ decay channel, where the signalenhanced regions are ranged by E <.3 GeV, m ES >.7 GeV/c, m πππ m nominal ω <.1 GeV/c, m KK m nominal φ <.1 GeV/c, F <.1, cosφ πππ <.9, and cosθ T <.8. The dominant systematic uncertainties for B and f L measurements in the B + K K + are arisen from the fit bias, probability density function (PDF) modelings, estimations of nonresonant and higher K background, and interference with (Kπ) In total, 1. % and 13.9 % uncertainties are determined for the B and the f L, respectively. The total B systematic uncertainties for B ωω and B ωφ are finding efficiencies. % and %, respectively, due to the fit bias, f L variations, and vertex Including systematic uncertainties, a B + K K + signal of (K S π+ ) and (K + π ) with.7σ significance is observed, with corresponding to B = ( ±.1) 1 and f L = 1.±.3±.1 []. This B upper limit is at 9% CL. Including systematic uncertainties, a B ωω signal of with.σ significance is observed, with corresponding to B = (1. ± ) 1, and the B upper limit of B ωφ is set to.7 1 at 9% CL [7]. 3. Analysis of B π π and B ηπ in Belle The time dependent CP asymmetries in the B π + π decay is used to measure an angle φ parameter in the CKM matrix. However, this angle cannot be easily extracted due to the penguin diagram contribution. We overcome this by using the isospin analysis of ππ system [8] for the B and A CP. The B π π decay is needed for this isospin relation and the B ηπ decay can be used to constrain the isospin-breaking effects on sinφ [9, 1]. The B π π candidates are reconstructed from a π pair and the B ηπ candidates are reconstructed from η and π, where channels of π γγ and η γγ(η γγ )/π + π π (η 3π ) are taken. We require that the reconstructed photon energy is greater than MeV in the barrel and 1 MeV in the endcap region of the ECL. The invariant mass of two photon combination has to suffice 11 MeV/c < m γγ < 1 MeV/c for the B π π and 11 MeV/c < m γγ < 1 MeV/c for the B ηπ with requiring χ < from the π mass-constrained fit. The requirement of E 1 E / E 1 +E <.9 for photon energies of η γγ is applied to reduce combinatorial background due to the low-energy photons, where E 1 and E are two photon energies. For the charged tracks from η 3π, the standard particle identification criteria and the impact parameter criteria are required. The invariant mass ranges of η γγ and η 3π candidates are MeV/c < m ηγγ < 7 MeV/c and 38 MeV/c < m η3π < 7 MeV/c. All candidates satisfy that M bc >. GeV/c and.3 GeV< E <. GeV for the B π π, and M bc >. GeV/c and.3 GeV< E <. GeV for the B ηπ. In order to suppress continuum events, the NB and the F techniques are used with disregarding candidates in regions C NB <.1 and F <.3 for B π π and B ηπ, respectively, PoS(FPCP1)7

5 where C NB and F are ranged from 1 to 1. The B B peaking backgrounds due to out-of-timing ECL events are removed by a ECL timing cut. The extended unbinned maximum-likelihood fits are performed to extract the B for three variables: E, M bc, and continuum suppression variable. Figure 3 shows the signal-enhanced projections of three fit variables for the B π π decay channel, where the signal-enhanced region are ranged by.1 GeV< E <. GeV and.7 GeV/c < M bc <.8 GeV/c. Figure shows the signal-enhanced projections of three fit variables for the B ηπ decay channel, where the signal-enhanced region are ranged by.1 GeV< E <.1 GeV,.7 GeV/c < M bc and C NB > 1.. For the B π π decay, the signal yield of ± 3 events (statistical error only) is found, and the 11% systematic uncertainty for B is assigned due to the efficiency assumption of input B, the PDF parametrization and the timing cut efficiency. The B is determined to be B = (.9 ±.1 ±.1) 1 with a significance of.7σ. This is the first measurement of B using timing information from the ECL. For the B ηπ decay, the signal yields of and.+.. events (statistical error only) are found for η γγ π and η 3π π, respectively, and % systematic uncertainties for B are assigned due to the PDF parametrization, the π /η γγ reconstruction, and nonresonant contributions. The B is determined to be B = ( ) 1 7 with a significance of 3.σ [11]. 6 in the B ππ due to π η η mixing is estimated less than.97 at 9% CL.. Analysis of B ρ ρ in LHCb The Belle and BaBar experiments reported the evidence for the B ρ ρ decay [1, 13] with the f L measurements. However, its results of both experiments differ at the level of. standard deviations. The large LHCb dataset may shed light on this discrepancy. At least one charged particle should have the transverse momentum (p T ) greater than 1.7 GeV/c and the inconsistency with originating from any primary interaction. For the b hadron decay selection, a multivariate algorithm [1] is used for the identifiaction of secondary vertices for those decay. Further selection criteria has the transverse momentum of (π + π ) candidates greater than. GeV/c, with at least one charged decay product with p T > 1 GeV/c, the transverse momentum of B candidates reconstructed from two (π + π ) pairs greater than p T >. GeV/c, the range from.3 GeV/c to 1.1 GeV/c for the invariant mass of (π + π ) candidates, and the range from. GeV/c to. GeV/c for the invariant mass of B candidates. The identification of the finalstate particles (PID) is performed with dedicated neural-networks-based discriminating variables [1] and a boosted decision tree algorithm (BDT) is used to suppress the combinatorial background [1, 17]. An unbinned extended likelihood fit for the four-body mass spectrum M(π + π )(π + π ) is performed simultaneously together with the normalization channel M(K + K )(K + π ) and the PID misidentification control channel M(K + π )(π + π ) mass spectra. The M(π + π )(π + π ) spectrum is first analyzed with the splot technique [18] to subtract statistically the background under the B (π + π )(π + π ) signal. We consider decay channels from B to ρ ρ and ωρ for B VV, ρ ρ (π + π ) and ρ f (98) for B V S, longitudinal ρ f (17) for B V T, B SS, and B a ± 1 π± along with its interference to other amplitudes. Distributions and fit projections of those decays are shown in Figure on subtracted invariant mass and cosine of helicity angle of a pion pair, and azimuthal angle between helicity planes of two pion pairs. Systematic uncertainties comes from mostly the limited size of simulated events samples, discrepancies between experimental and simulated data, efficiencies of PID requirements, and tracking efficiencies for π and K. PoS(FPCP1)7 Figure : (color online). Projections for B ρ ρ on background-subtracted M(π + π ), cosθ and ϕ distributions. Points with error bars are the data and the solid curves represent the full fit function. The specific decays B ρ ρ (solid brown), longitudinal B ρ ρ (dashed red), transverse B ρ ρ (dotted red), B ωρ (dashed brown), B V S (dashed blue), B SS (long dashed green), B V T (orange) and B a ± 1 π± (light blue) are displayed.

7 After performing the unbinned extended likelihood fit to the angular and two-body invariant mass distributions, a B ρ ρ signal of 3 ± 8 ± 8 with 7.1σ significance is observed, with corresponding to B = (.9 ±.17 ±.9 ±.) 1, where the last uncertainty is due to the normalization channel, and f L = ±.3 [19]. This measurement is the first observation.. Dalitz plot analysis of B + K S π+ π in BaBar Tree amplitudes in B K π decays as intermediated states of K π + and K + π are populated from the Dalitz plane. Those decays are sensitive to the φ 3 angle. This angle can be obtained from a relative phase Φ 3/ = 1 Arg( Ā 3/ /A 3/ ) in absence of the electroweak penguin contributions [], where A 3/ is constructed from a linear combination of weak decay amplitudes for the B K π to form a pure isospin I = 3/, and Ā 3/ is the CP conjugate of the A 3/. In this isospin analysis, QCD penguin contributions are eliminated [1]. The B + KS π+ π candidate is reconstructed from candidates of a π, a charged pion, and a KS with a pair of charged pions in selection requirements, where the π laboratory energy is above. GeV, the π lateral moments are between.1 and., the π invariant mass range is from.11 GeV/c to.1 GeV/c, the KS invariant mass is ranged ±1 MeV/c around the KS nominal mass, the KS proper decay time is greater than s, the KS vertex probability is greater than 1, the cosine of the angle between the momentum and the flight directions of KS is greater than.99, and standard particle identification criteria are used for charged pions. E <.3 GeV and m ES >.3 GeV/c are also required for the selection of B candidates. In order to suppress continuum events, the BDT algorithm is used with disregarding candidates having BDT output less than.. The charmed B B background such as B + D π + is vetoed with 1.8 GeV/c < m K S π < 1.9 GeV/c. The remaining B B backgrounds are classified based on the shape of five fit variables, m ES, and Dalitz plot distriubtions of m K S π+ and m π + π. An unbinned extended likelihood fit with the Laura++ software [] is performed for five fit variables into simultaneously B ± with fit components K π + π, K π +, K + π, K (13)π +, K + (13)π, ρ + K, continuum and B B background. In systematics, dominant uncertainties are originated from the BDT output PDF modeling, self crossfeed signal PDF modeling, background model in the Dalitz plot, the Blatt-Weisskopf radius parameter [3], and parameters of K (89) and K (13). In this study, the first B measurements of K π + π and K + (13)π are obtained as (.9 ±. ± ) 1 and (17. ±. ± ) 1, respectively [], where the last uncertainty is due to the signal model. The first evidence of A CP in the B + K + π is also found as.±.1±. +.. corresponding to the significance 3.σ. Together with pervious measurements [] for K π, averaged difference of A CP s are estimated with A CP (K π) A CP (K + π ) A CP (K + π ) =.1 ±.13. Although this analysis makes this uncertainty much improved, this is still too large to be conclusive. The K π relative phase uncertainty is also too large to measure the φ 3 in this statistics.
