2 Britain's IMumbe Make no mistake about it, Volkswagen motor caravans are Britain's Number One Best Sellers. Volkswagens driver appeal, low depreciation year-in yearout and all round quality of finish wins more friends every year. A p p e a l : There are many reasons why the Volkswagen is regarded as a 'driver's' car. The engine over the rear wheels not only gives outstanding traction when off the beaten track (a tricky camp site, for example), but also ensures that the vehicle is evenly balanced both heavily or lightly laden whei i out on the road. (And the rear engine gives unimpeded walk-through from the cab - something that's more than just handy on a rainy day). There's an enormous range of engine options. The new water cooled petrol engines are available in two different power outputs, there is a diesel engine and a turbo diesel. There is the option of four or five speed gearboxes or a technically advanced 'go anywhere' four wheel drive system And for any females in the family the Volkswagen drives more like a car than a van. It has a smooth manual gearbox (or automatic). Light steering. And with a turning circle ofjust 30ft even tricky parking manoeuvres are straightforward. Safe: If Volkswagen have built a vehicle that rewards the driver, they have also created a vehicle that is safe for its occupants. The body is constructed around an immensely strong safety 'cage'. This is particularly so in the cab area where massive steel tubes - located beneath the floor and designed to collapse progressively in the event of a front end crash protect the occupants. Quality: A major reason for Volkswagen's amazing ability to hold its value is - quality. Not only the way in which the vehicle is put together - but the way in which the vehicle is under-sealed and protected for years of life after it is built.

3 Motor A motor caravan Caravan conversion to match the VW7 ll is no ordinary motor caravan conversion that will dojustice to the V o l k s w a g e n. For a start, w h i l e w e have seen the advantages of the rear engine layout - it does call for a flair and ingenuity from the converter if he is to provide s o m e t h i n g really exceptional for the motor caravanner. Such a converter is Richard H o l d s w o r t h. For a start, Richard H o l d s w o r t h builds t w o totally different layouts - o n e (onventional layout w i t h the m a i n units d o w n the off-side of the vehicle a n d w i t h the bed over the engine deck, w h i l e the second is a c o m p l e t e re-think w i t h a rear-end kitchen of exceptional proportions a n d the beds (single or double) il irough into the cab area. Not only does research into the best layouts get a great deal Of attention, w i t h Richard H o l d s w o r t h but so does every < letail of each layout. Take for e x a m p l e the simple matter of c h a n g i n g gas cylinders. O n the rear kitchen Vision they can be stored over the engine deck a n d changed simply a n d easily through the tail-gate. But w h e r e the gas cylinders have to be carried in the long siorage unit w i t h i n the floor area as in the Villa 3, Richard H o l d s w o r t h designers place them in neat trays that glide out ai the touch of a finger. Thus, w h a t has normally been a I >, nek-bending chore n o w b e c o m e s a light a n d simple task. Cab seats are another example of our attention to detail. It i the Villa 3 the cab seats are Volkswagen's o w n - w i t h subtle c o n t o u r i n g a n d w i d e ranging adjustment they're < omfortable for long a n d short trips alike. Ii i the V i s i o n w e g o one step further because the seats need!<) be c u i v e d a n d comfortable for day-time driving but flat and comfortable for night-time sleeping. J icei interior space and outstanding features in II i i i H ii iship to exterior size, the Volkswagen Vision takes i u i ic beating. I II ivi< njsly Richard Holdsworth designers cannot make the 'ii sw, igen interior any larger than it is - but two clever ill lys I lave maximised the capacity of this the most popular in iii II caravan base vehicle of all time. I ir.i of all, by selecting Volkswagen's own high top with the ii II il Miengthening bows re-positioned around the rooftop, l>h ' 11. iid Holdsworth has provided standing room where no M m ling room existed before. (ii isl in case you're concerned the re-positioning of these I ii. il roof bows might weaken an immensely strong safety I I ii i ', remember that Volkswagen themselves have rein i Kjthened the roof structure to satisfy the most i Iri 11. II iding safety bodies in the world. Secondly, Richard Holdsworth designers have used a simple room divider to create the two-room system normally seen in much bigger high tops or coachbuilt motor caravans. This clever fold-away room divider partitions off part of the vehicle when a toilet compartment is required and folds away when not. And it means a toilet compartment of a size that really can be used - some 44 inches long and 22 inches wide - measured even by American motorhome standards and it's big. Rear E n d Kitchen: With all the extra space that Volkswagen's own high top generates our designers really excelled when it came to creating your kitchen. The heart of the unit is the latest enamel cooker, sink and drainer unit that simply needs a wipe clean to come up looking like new time and time again. We've fitted the large Electrolux caravan refrigerator powered by 220 volt electrical supply when on site, by vehicle electrics when on the move and by bottled gas when camping 'in the wild'. (While on the subject of electrics, the Vision is equipped with a sophisticated control system incorporating a second battery, split charger and mains input. There is a battery condition meter and low warning light for the under-floor fresh water tank.) Dining/Sleeping: The Vision has a choice between comfortable double or single main beds - and if you want a four berth, a 6ft double is available as an optional extra within the high top. But the Vision's real versatility comes from the marvellous way in which the sleeping/dining/seating arrangements work. Take a typical day for example. At the start you will probably leave the rear seat in the spacious and comfortable 1' shaped configuration. When you're on the move, a few simple movements gives you four comfortable face-forwards seats. In the evening you may wish to entertain friends - recline one cab seat and swivel the other to match up with the 'L' shaped dinette - the space is enormous. Just look at the pictures. At night, of course, the single or double beds come into play and in the morning, you're back to the 1' shaped dinette for breakfast. The Vision has one further trick up its sleeve - the part of the 1' shaped dinette nearest the door lifts out altogether to provide a generous amount of free floor area for carrying goods.
