Let F be a field, and let H*(F, ju n ) denote the Galois cohomology of Gal(F s /F) with coefficients in the group /u n of nth roots of 1 for some fixed n prime to char F. Bass and Tate have shown that the natural pairing j., ^ ^. i 1 cup product 0 <a o F*/F* n x F*/F* n = H\F 9 /A n ) X H\F 9 /ij * H 2 (F,/0 is a symbol on F. In other words there is an induced homomorphism {nth power norm residue symbol) of the Milnor K 2 group [7], R n, F :K,(F)lnK 2 (F)->IP(F, ft *). Tate showed that R n F is an isomorphism where F is a global field, and asked whether an analogous result held for arbitrary fields. The situation is particularly interesting when ^nc F, because in this case H 2 (F, fxt) ~ H\F, f, n ) [x n ^n Br(F) <g> ^n (Br(F)=Brauer group of F). Surjectivity of R n implies, for example, that every division algebra with exponent n and center F is split by an abelian extensionfieldof F. The question of surjectivity for R 29 for example, amounts to the classical question of whether a division algebra of exponent 2 is equivalent to a tensor product of quaternion algebras. In this note I will consider the case F=function field of an algebraic variety X over a ground field k. I will give some partial results of an algebraic nature, and sketch some relations between Tate's question for F, and the global geometry of X. Detailed proofs are available in preprint form. 1. Algebraic results. THEOREM (l.l). Let F=k(t l9, t r ) be a rational function field in r variables over afield k, and let n be an integer prime to char k. For example, if A: is algebraically closed, K 2 {k) is divisible so K\k(t l9..-,t r )) nk 2 (k(t l9, t r )) Both sides are zero for r= 1, but not for r2^2. The main idea in the proof of (1.1) is the existence of exact sequences for any field F of characteristic prime to n (X=Spec F[t]=A F ). xex', closed When gr=r=2, this sequence can be compared with an exact sequence of Milnor 0 -> K\F) -> K\F(t)) -> O H*)* -* > and the theorem follows easily. Recall a field F is a C r field if every homogeneous form of degree q in >q r variables over F has a nontrivial zero. THEOREM (1.2). Let F be a C 2 fieldcontaining f* 2 rfor some r^ 1. Let R(F) be the Grothendieck ring of quadratic forms on F, and let ƒ <= R(F) be the ideal of forms of degree zero. Milnor [7] has described an isomorphism p:i 2 IP-+ K 2 (F)/2K 2 (F) which composes with the norm residue symbol R 2F to give the Hasse invariant, Hasse = R 2F o p. Since Fis C 2, quadratic forms are classified by their degree, determinant, and Hasse invariant, so R 2F is injective. The proof is completed by an induction argument on r. 2. Global questions. Are the Zariski cohomology groups H P (X, J^JnJf ö ) finite for given p,q,n7 An affirmative answer for all p, q would imply, for example, that the groups nch*(x) and CH«(X)jnCH«(X) are finite for all q, where CH*(X) denotes the Chow group of algebraic cycles mod rational equivalence on X. COROLLARY (2.4). Assume NW^iX, ^ 2 ) finite (e.g. k algebraically closed). Then: Coker(R ntf ) finite => JFPiX, Jf\\'nX 2 ) finite => nch 2 (X) finite. For example, if 2Br(F) is generated by quaternion algebras (i.e. CokerCR 2>F )=(0)) we get 2CH\X) finite. These results follow from a study of the norm residue map of sheaves K.x'^Jn^i-^^^n 2 ), where Jf 2 (^2) is the Zariski sheaf associated to the presheaf U\-+HÎ t (U, f* 2 ). COROLLARY (2.5). Assume k is algebraically closed of characteristic 5*2, and that X is a surface. Then V(X, Jf 2 /2 r Jf 2 ) is finite for any r^l. Indeed the function field k(x) is C 2, so the assertion follows from (1.2) and (2.3).

Then Coker(R^ F) = (0) for all such F if and only if the galois cohomology groups IP^iG, K2(F')) = (0) (K2=K 2 ltorsion) whenever F'jF is a galois extension of fields algebraic over F 0, with G = Gal(F7/0 ^ ZjlZ. Combining this with (1.2) and (2.4), one gets a criterion for "cofiniteness" of the two torsion subgroup CH 2 (X)(2) of zero cycles on a surface. ADDED IN PROOF. Lam and Elman [14] have proved independently of the author a sharper version of (1.2) which implies finiteness for T(X, <yf 2 /2 r Jf 2 ) when X has dimension ^3 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic ^2 (cf.
