"Do not worry about your problems with mathematics, I assure you mine are far greater." -Einstein Agenda for this Blackhole of Space O_O Ahhh my SLG leader is a GEEK! So he is. 2 Reasons why being a geek is cool 1) You re in university we re all geeks =) 2) Geeks can do anything they want! We are all in university to learn to judge each other is a waste of our time and our potential. This is not a one-on-one tutoring session, and you will be working with each other in groups to improve each other s knowledge of the concepts that are essential to your success in this course. Inclusiveness is the only way this will work.

Agenda 1) What is this SLG thinger? 2) Icebreaker get your pickaxes ready 3) Significant Figures ) Conversions I ll give you 2 pogs for 1 striker! 5) Scalar and Vector quantities 6) 1D Kinematics 7) Graphing all this mumbo jumbo SLG Rules and Procedures and Expectations 1) SLGs ARE Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious 2) I am NOT a TA. Mainly for your own sanity All sessions will be coordinated by me, but as a group we will work through the handouts and other goodies I have planned. I am a facilitator not a teacher. 3) Feel free to get up and stretch if you re butts fusing to the seat or your brain stops functioning while the sessions going on. Please, I don t like casualties. 4) Each session will consist of some type of lecture review to ensure concepts are etched into your brains more permanently. This will be done in a variety of ways but in general I am planning to have lots of exercises, and questions that I anticipate will be on the final to answer. SO bring your lecture notes and readings so we may groove with grace! 5) Learn, never Cram to ensure you can do the walk in your upper years as well. It is always better to stay on top of things rather than let them slide. I will do my best to smooth out your walk. 6) Sessions are for you, so tell me if what I have planned Is not in sync with your needs. 3 Pg 3 Significant Figures What is What are the number of significant figures in the following, what are the units and how would you write it in scientific form if simplified to 2 decimals? Bowls f) x 10 6 Volts b) Grapes g) X Joules c) Hz d) m/s 2 e) s Trailing zeros that aren't needed to hold the decimal point are significant. For example, 4.00 has three significant figures. 4 Pg 4 Conversions Profs love to throw subtle conversions at you so when you re not paying attention WHAM! You get hit with a conversion and don t realize it and your answer is wrong. The important thing is look at the units of the answer and the units of the question and let the light bulb go on! So here are a few conversions mixed up with sig. figs 1) 34.5 km/hr to m/s? Style I use to solve conversions : 2) 10 kg/hr to g/ms 3) m/s to km/hr 4) 4.5 x km/s 2 to m/s 2 5) m/s x 4.00 s (Sig figs) 6) It takes 600 ms for your eye to blink. Suppose the distance traveled by your eye is 2.3 cm. Calculate the speed your blink in m/s. 7) Find the Volume of the object with the following dimensions and keep sig figs : m, 3.05cm, km (check the text for what some of the unit prefixes mean) Slightly harder conversion: Remember 1m = 100cm» 1m 2 = 1m*1m = 100cm*100cm = 10000cm 2 etc. 8) kg / m 3 to g / cm 3
