UNIVERSALITY AT AN ENDPOINT FOR ORTHOGONAL POLYNOMIALS WITH GERONIMUS-TYPE WEIGHTS BRIAN SIMANEK arxiv: v [math.ca] 8 Aug 207 Abstract. We provide a ew closed form expressio for the Geroimus polyomials o the uit circle ad use it to obtai ew results ad formulas. Amog our results is a uiversality result at a edpoit of a arc for polyomials orthogoal with respect to a Geroimus type weighto aarcofthe uit circle. The keytool isaformulaofmclaughliforthe th power of a 2 2 matrix, which we use to derive coveiet formulas for Geroimus polyomials. Keywords: Geroimus Polyomials, Chebyshev Polyomials, Uiversality Mathematics Subject Classificatio: Primary 42C05; Secodary 33C45. Itroductio Let µ be a probability measure whose support is a ifiite ad compact subset of the uit circle D i the complex plae. Let {Φ z;µ} =0 be the sequece of moic orthogoal polyomials for the measure µ ad let {ϕ z;µ} =0 be the sequece of orthoormal polyomials. It is well-kow that correspodig to this measure is a sequece of Verblusky coefficiets {α } =0 DN 0 so that Φ + z;µ = zφ z;µ ᾱ Φ z;µ, N 0, where Φ z;µ := z Φ / z;µ. The formula is ofte called the Szegő recursio see [25, Sectio.5]. The relatioship betwee ifiitely supported probability measures o the uit circle ad sequeces of Verblusky coefficiets is a bijectio see [25, Sectio.7] ad there is a substatial literature describig the relatioship betwee the sequece ad the correspodig measure see [25, 26] ad refereces therei. Our focus i this work will be o the so-called Geroimus polyomials, which are orthogoal with respect to the measure correspodig to the sequece of Verblusky coefficiets {α,α,α,...} for some α D. The measure of orthogoality i this case is supported o a arc of the uit circle whose legth depeds o α ad possibly a mass poit outside this arc, whose weight depeds o α. The Geroimus polyomials have bee studied before see [7, 8, 9, 0, 20, 2] ad there is a kow closed form expressio for them see also [25, Sectio.6]. This formula was later used by Lubisky ad Nguye i [7] to obtai a uiversality result for certai polyomial reproducig kerels at a iterior poit of the arc supportig the measure of orthogoality. Our goal will be to provide a ew closed form expressio for the Geroimus polyomials, which will eable us to prove several ew results ad formulas, icludig a uiversality result at the edpoit of the arc supportig the measure of orthogoality. The key tooliour aalysis comes frommatrix theory. The Szegő recursio cabewritte Φ+ z;µ Φ +z;µ z ᾱ = α z Φ z;µ Φ z;µ,
2 see [25, Sectio 3.2]. The 2 2 matrix i this relatio is called the th trasfer matrix for µ. If the Verblusky coefficiets form a costat sequece, the oe ca recover the polyomial Φ z;µ i a straightforward way by usig the followig formula for the th power of a 2 2 matrix. Theorem. McLaughli, [9]. Let A be a 2 2 matrix give by a b A =. c d If R deotes the trace of A ad D deotes its determiat, the A y dy = by, cy y ay where y = 2 m=0 m m R 2m D m. 2 This simple result is all that we require to prove our ew formula, which appears as Theorem 3.. Before we ca state our results ad formulas i Sectio 3, we review some otatio ad termiology i the ext sectio. Fially, i Sectio 4, we state ad prove our uiversality result. 2. Preiaries I this sectio we discuss some otatio, formulas, ad termiology that we will use throughout Sectios 3 ad 4. May of the topics we discuss here are part of a rich theory that is too log to discuss i full detail. Therefore, we will focus oly o the specific formulas that we will eed for our proofs. 2.. Chebyshev Polyomials. The formula that we will obtai for the Geroimus polyomials ivolves the Chebyshev polyomials of the secod kid, which are orthoormal with respect to the measure π 2 x2 dx o the iterval [,]. We deote this sequece of polyomials by {U } =0 ad ote that these polyomials are give by the formula 2 U x = j=0 j j j see [, page 37]. We also recall from [, page 37] that U x = x+ x 2 + x x x 2 2x 2k 3 We will make oe use of the Chebyshev polyomials of the first kid, which are orthogoal with respect to the measure π dx o the iterval [,]. We will deote this sequece x 2 of polyomials by {T } =0 ad defie them by the formula see [, page 37]. T x = U x xu x 5 4
2.2. Secod Kid Polyomials. We have already metioed that to every sequece of complex umbers {α 0,α,α 2,...} D N 0 there correspods a uique probability measure µ o the uit circle havig ifiite support. The sequece {α } =0 geerates the sequece of orthogoal polyomials {Φ z;µ} =0 via the Szegő recursio. Oe ca similarly geerate a sequece of moic polyomials from the Szegő recursio usig the sequece { α 0, α, α 2,...}, ad the resultig polyomials are what we call the secod kid polyomials forthemeasureµadwedeotethemby{ψ z;µ} =0 asi[25, 26]. Thepolyomials {Ψ z;µ} =0 are also orthogoal with respect to a probability measure o the uit circle, which is i the family of Aleksadrov measures for the measure µ. We will ot make use of this particular fact, so we refer the reader to [25, Sectio.3.9] for details Wall Polyomials. Correspodig to every probability measure o the uit circle is a Schur fuctio f, which maps D to itself. Whe the support of µ is fiite, this map is a Blaschke product, but whe the support is ifiite, there is a caoical pair of sequeces of polyomials {A } =0 ad {B } =0 such that A /B coverges to f uiformly o compact subsets of D as see [25, Sectio.3.8]. These polyomials are called the Wall polyomials for the measure µ ad the Pitér-Nevai formulas see [25, Theorem 3.2.0] or [22] tell us that A z = Ψ + z;µ Φ + z;µ 2z B z = Ψ + z;µ+φ + z;µ Paraorthogoal Polyomials. Suppose µ is a probability measure o the uit circle havig{φ z;µ} =0 asitsmoicorthogoalpolyomials. Foreach β Dadeach N 0, oe defies the paraorthogoal polyomial Φ β +z;µ by Φ β +z;µ := zφ z;µ βφ z;µ. We also defie Ψ +z;µ β := zψ z;µ βψ z;µ for each N 0. Paraorthogoal polyomials were itroduced i [2] ad have the property that all of their zeros are simple ad lie o the uit circle. Paraorthogoal polyomials arisig from Geroimus polyomials have bee previously cosidered i [3] Regularity. If µ is a probability measure o the uit circle with orthoormal polyomials {ϕ z;µ} =0, let κ deote the leadig coefficiet of ϕ. Followig the termiology from [28], we will say that the measure µ is regular if κ/ = capsuppµ, where capk is the logarithmic capacity of the compact set K. Regularity is a complicated otio ad we will ot discuss the techical details here. We metio that a measure µ whose support is a arc Γ of the uit circle is regular if ad oly if [ ] / P L sup Γ = 6 degp P L 2 µ P 0 3
4 see [28, Theorem 3.2.3v]. Regularity idicates that the measure µ has sufficiet desity that a polyomial caot have a expoetially small L 2 -orm without havig a expoetially small L -orm. With these preiaries i had, we ca ow proceed to state ad prove our ew results. 3. Geroimus Polyomials For ay α D, let = α 2, ad let µ α be the probability measure o the uit circle whose Verblusky coefficiets satisfy α = α for all N 0. This measure is supported o the arc {e iθ : 2arcsi α θ 2π 2arcsi α } ad possibly oe poit outside this arc see [25, Sectio.6]. Our first result is a ew formula for the polyomials ϕ z;µ α ad ϕ z;µ α. Theorem 3.. For ay α D ad N 0, it holds that z + ϕ z;µ α = z /2 U 2 +ᾱ z z U z + z+α ϕ z;µ α = z /2 U 2 z where U = 0. z + 2 z U z + 2 z Proof. Sice the Verblusky coefficiets for the Geroimus polyomials are all the same, we have Φ z;µ α z ᾱ Φ z;µ =, α αz Therefore, Theorem. implies where for ay choice of z we have y z = 2 m=0 m Φ z;µ α = y +ᾱy, 7 Φ z;µ α = y z+αy, 8 m z + z + 2m 2 z m = z /2 U 2. z If we plug this ito 7 ad 8 ad ote that the leadig coefficiet of ϕ is see [25, Equatio.5.22], we get the desired formulas. Let us explore some elemetary cosequeces of Theorem 3.. First otice that we ca fid the geeratig fuctio for the polyomials {ϕ z;µ α } =0. Corollary 3.2. The polyomials {ϕ z;µ α } =0 satisfy ϕ z;µ α t t tᾱ = tz ++zt 2 =0 wheever this series coverges.
Proof. This is a immediate cosequece of Theorem 3. ad the fact that U xt = 2xt+t 2 =0 wheever this series coverges see [, Equatio ]. As a secod applicatio, we ca use Theorem 3. to fid coveiet formulas for the Wall polyomials for the measure µ α. Corollary 3.3. For all N, the Wall polyomials A ad B for the measure µ α are give by z + A z = α z /2 U 2 z [ ] z + z z + B z = + z +/2 U + 2 z U 2 z Proof. This is a immediate cosequece of Theorem 3. ad the Pitér-Nevai formulas. As a additioal applicatio, we have the followig relatio for the first ad secod-kid paraorthogoal polyomials. Corollary 3.4. For every α D ad every N it holds that Φ ;µ α+ψ ;µ α = 0. We ca also use Theorem 3. to provide ew proofs of some existig results. For istace, we ca apply Corollary 3.3 ad sed to fid the Schur fuctio for the measure µ α. Ideed, by [24, Theorem ], we kow that U + x U x If we apply Corollary 3.3 ad 9 with x = z+ 2 z A z B z = = x+ x 2, x [,]. 9 we coclude 2α z +, z <, z z which agrees with the formula give for f i [25, Sectio.6]. We ca also use Theorem 3. to deduce the ratio asymptotic behavior of the orthoormal Geroimus polyomials. If we apply the formula from Theorem 3. ad 9 with x = z+ 2, we see that z ϕ + z;µ α ϕ z;µ α = z ++ z z, z suppµ α. 2 This result is ot ew ad follows from the stroger results i [0, Theorem ], but Theorem 3. provides us with a easy proof. Theorem 3. also provides a ew proof of the followig fact, which appears i [6, Equatio 5]. To state it, we recall the polyomials {T } N from Sectio 2.. Corollary 3.5. The pair X,Y = T z,u z solves the Pell equatio X 2 z 2 Y 2 =. 5
6 Proof. We recall [25, Propositio 3.2.2], which tells us that for ay measure µ with Verblusky coefficiets {α j } j=0 it holds that Ψ z;µφ z;µ+φ z;µψ z;µ = 2z α j 2 Applyig this formula with µ = µ α, we fid 2 z + z + U 2 +U z 2 z 2 z + z U Therefore, by ivokig 5 we fid that for ay w C it holds that as desired. j=0 z + z + 2 U z 2 =. z T w 2 +U w 2 = U w wu w 2 +U w 2 = +w 2 U w 2 Oe ca also use Theorem 3. to prove more substatial ew results that require more detailed calculatio ad aalysis. The ext sectio is devoted to just such a result, amely a uiversality result at the edpoit of the arc supportig the measure of orthogoality. 4. Uiversality Let µ be a probability measure with ifiite support o the uit circle. The degree polyomial reproducig kerel K z,w;µ is give by K z,w;µ := ϕ m z;µϕ m w;µ m=0 ad is the reproducig kerel for the space of polyomials of degree at most i L 2 µ. Oe is ofte iterested i calculatig the followig it if it exists: K z 0 +σ,z 0 +σ 2 ;µ, 0 K z 0,z 0 ;µ where σ j 0 as i a specific way for j =,2. If this it exists ad is the same for a large class of measures µ, the we call the correspodig result a uiversality result. Some uiversality results whe the poit z 0 is the edpoit of a iterval supportig the measure of orthogoality ca be foud i [4, 4, 5, 6], but all of these results assume that the measure is supported o a compact subset of the real lie. Our mai result i this sectio is Theorem 4., which cosiders measures supported o a arc of the uit circle. Before we ca state it, we eed to defie some otatio. If J s deotes the Bessel fuctio of the first kid of order s, the we set J /2 a,b := J /2 a bj /2 b J /2 b aj /2 a 4 a, a b 2a /4 b /4 a b J/2 2 a J 3/2 aj /2 a a = b as i [4, 5, 6]. As oted i [5], the fuctio J /2 is etire. Now we ca state our mai result about uiversality after recallig the otio of regularity from Sectio 2.5. For the remaider of this sectio, we idetify the uit circle with the iterval [0, 2π.
Theorem 4.. Fix α,0 ad let µ be a probability measure o the uit circle of the form hθwθ dθ +d µ where 2π supp µ [2arcsi α + ǫ,2π 2arcsi α ] for some ǫ > 0 ad wθ = { α 2 cos 2 θ/2 +αsiθ/2 0 o.w. 2arcsi α < θ < 2π 2arcsi α where hθ is cotiuous at 2arcsi α ad h2arcsi α > 0. Assume also that µ is regular. The uiformly for a,b i compact subsets of the complex plae, it holds that K e iθα a 2,e iθα b 2 ;µ K e iθα,e iθα ;µ where θ α = 2arcsi α ad = α 2. = J /2 αa, α b J /2 0,0, Remark. Notice that the itig kerel i Theorem 4. is the same as i the real lie case from [4, Theorem.4]. Before we proceed with the proof of Theorem 4., we preset a proof of the followig fact about the kerel J /2. Propositio 4.2. The fuctio J /2 t, t is o-vaishig as a fuctio of t C. Proof. Whe t is real, we use the fact that 2siz 2cosz J /2 z =, J /2 z =, J 3/2 z = πz πz see [3, pages 6 & 7] to see that J /2t,t = 2πt si2 t 2 t, t R, 2siz zcosz πz 3 which is o-zero for all t R. Usig similar formulas, we fid that whe t R, we have J /2 t, t = cos tsi t t cos tsi t t πt t = cos tsi t Im t πimt 7. Sice we are assumig t R, we may assume Re[ t] 0. We will show that is ever zero whe Re[ t] > 0,Im[ t] > 0adtheother cases cabededuced byusig thesymmetry of this expressio. Suppose t = x+iy ad t = x iy our choice of t does ot matter because the 2 2 cosie fuctio ad the sic fuctio are both eve. Usig basic trigoometric idetities, we ca rewrite the umerator of as [ ] six+isihy Im x+iy = xsihy ysix x 2 +y 2 2 This is zero whe y = 0 ad the first partial derivatives of both the umerator ad deomiator are positive whe x is positive. This shows that 2 is positive whe x ad y are positive. Similar calculatios for egative values of x or y show is o-zero whe t R.
8 The proof of Theorem 4. will follow the method pioeered by Lubisky, which cosists of first provig the result i oe particular case whe h ad the usig localizatio techiques ad the assumed regularity of the measure to prove the more geeral case see [6]. 4.. A Model Case. Fix α,0 ad defie θ α = 2arcsi α. The measure µ α from Sectio 3 is of the form give i Theorem 4. with h see [25, Sectio.6]. Let us write z = e iw, where we allow w to be complex. Sice U is eve or odd depedig o the parity of our choice of z will ot effect our calculatios, so we will write z = e iw/2. Theorem 3. the gives cosw/2 ϕ z;µ α = e iw/2 U cosw/2 ϕ z;µ α = e iw/2 U +ᾱ e iw/2u cosw/2 eiw/2 +α cosw/2 U We will apply 3 ad 4 with w = θ α +t/ 2 for various values of t. We begi with the followig lemma. Lemma 4.3. The collectio of fuctios } {K e iθα a 2 b iθα,e 2 ;µ α is a ormal family o C 2 i the variables a ad b. 3 Proof. By Motel s Theorem ad the Cauchy-Schwarz iequality, it suffices to show that the collectio { } K e iθα a 2,e iθα a 2 ;µ α 3 N is uiformly bouded i compact subsets of C as a fuctio of a. To do so, we use 4 to see that U cos θα 2 a = U αa 2 2 +o 2 = O as ad hece 3 implies ϕ e iθα a 2 ;µ α = O as uiformly for a i compact subsets of C. It follows that K e iθα a 2,e iθα a 2 ;µ α = O N m 2 = O 3 m= 3 4 uiformly for a i compact subsets of C. This is the desired coclusio.
To prove Theorem 4. i the case µ = µ α for α,0, we apply the CD formula with a b see [25, Theorem 2.2.7]. Usig Theorem 3., we fid K e iθα a 2,e iθα b 2 ;µ α = e i b a/ 2 [ + i b a cos θα2 a e 2 U 2 + U + cos θ α2 b + i b a e +α cos θα2 a U e iθα 2 b +α U cos θ α2 b cos θα2 a 2 U 2 + +α cos θα2 e iθα 2 a U a 2 2 +α e iθα 2 b U cos θ α2 b ] 2 2 U + cos θ α2 b eiθα 2 a 9 2iei b a + 2 = 2 +α e i b a/ 2 [ cos U + θ α2 b cos θα2 U a cos θα2 a 2 +U 2 + U cos θ α2 b +U cos θ α2 b cos θα2 U a θα si 2 a si θα 2 b +α ] b a si 5 Usig basic agle additio formulas, we fid cos θα 2 + t t = cos + α t si = + αt 2 2 +O 4 θα si 2 + t t t = αcos +si = α+ t +O 4 If µ is the measure of orthogoality for the polyomials {U } 0, the K x,y;µ = U yu + x U xu + y 2x ȳ see [27, Sectio 3]. Lettig x = cos θ α2 a 2 ad y = cos θ α2 b 2 2, we fid that the 2 first two terms i 5 ca be rewritte αa b 2α K 2 2 αa+o 2 2, αb+o ;µ +o 2 2
0 as. By [4, Theorem.4], we see that we ca rewrite this as αa b 2α K 2 2,;µ +o J /2 αa, α b J /2 0,0 6 as. Usig the fact that U = + see [, page 37] we fid K,;µ = , so 6 simplifies to 6 α2 a bj /2 αa, α b 3J /2 0,0 +o as. To estimate the last term i 5, we use 4 as i the proof of Lemma 4.3 to see that U cos θα 2 + t = U + αt 2 2 +o 2 = O as. Sice si b a = O 2 as, we see that the last term i 5 is O as. Combiig all that we have leared so far yields K e iθα a 2,e iθα b 2+αα 2 J 2 ;µ α = o /2 αa 3 2 J /2 0,0, α b as whe a b. By cotiuity ad Lemma 4.3 we may exted this formula to the case a = b ad deduce that the error term ca be estimated uiformly for a ad b i compact subsets of C. Settig a = b = 0, we fid 2+αα K e iθα,e iθα ;µ α = o as see also [5, Theorem.2]. We have thus prove K e iθα a 2,e iθα b 2 ;µ α K e iθα,e iθα ;µ α = J /2 αa, α b J /2 0,0, where the covergece is uiform for a ad b i compact subsets of C. This proves the desired result i the case µ = µ α whe α, The Geeral Case. To prove the geeral case, we will use the followig theorem, which is due to Bourgade ad appears i a more geeral form as [2, Theorem 3.0]. Theorem 4.4 [2]. Let µ be as i Theorem 4. ad let µ α be as i Sectio 4.. If r 0 +sup K e iθα t 2,e iθα t 2 ;µ α 7 K r e iθα t 2,e iθα t 2 ;µ α = 8 uiformly for t i compact subsets of R, the uiformly for a ad b i compact subsets of R, it holds that hθ α K e iθα a 2,e iθα b 2 ;µ K e iθα a 2,e iθα b 2 ;µ α K e iθα a 2,e iθα a 2 ;µ = 0
Remark. Note that [2, Theorem 3.0] icludes a mutual regularity coditio for the two measures i questio, but the regularity of µ ad µ α immediately implies that this coditio is satisfied. The fact that µ α satisfies the coditio 8 is a direct cosequece of the calculatios i Sectio 4.. All that remais the is to show that the coclusio of Theorem 4.4 gives us the coclusio that we wat. For this purpose, the followig lemma is essetial. Lemma 4.5. Let µ be as i the statemet of Theorem 4. ad let µ α be as i Sectio 4.. For ay a C it holds that K e iθα a 2,e iθα a 2 ;µ α K e iθα a 2,e iθα a 2 ;µ = hθ α ad the covergece is uiform for a i compact subsets of C. The proof of Lemma 4.5 is very much aalogous to the proof of [23, Lemma 2.8], so we will ot preset the details here. It is based o Christoffel fuctios ad relies heavily o ideas from the proof of [8, Theorem 7]. Corollary 4.6. Let µ be as i the statemet of Theorem 4.. The K e iθα,e iθα ;µ K e iθα a 2,e iθα a J /2 αa, αā 2 ;µ = J /2 0,0 > 0 9 ad the covergece is uiform o compact subsets of C. Furthermore, the collectio } {K e iθα a 2 b iθα,e 2 ;µ K e iθα,e iθα ;µ is a ormal family o C 2 i the variables a ad b. Remark. By Propositio 4.2, the right-had side of 9 is a well-defied positive real umber. Proof. The it 9 follows from Lemma 4.5 ad the fact that the it holds whe µ = µ α. The statemet about ormality follows from Motel s theorem, the Cauchy-Schwarz iequality, ad the uiformity i the it 9. Proof of Theorem 4.. We have already see that we may apply Theorem 4.4. By applyig Corollary 4.6, we may rewrite the coclusio of Theorem 4.4 as K e iθα a 2,e iθα b 2 ;µ K e iθα a 2,e iθα b 2 ;µ α K e iθα,e iθα ;µ hθ α K e iθα,e iθα ;µ = 0 By applyig Lemma 4.5, we may rewrite this as K e iθα a 2,e iθα b 2 ;µ K e iθα a 2,e iθα b 2 ;µ α K e iθα,e iθα ;µ K e iθα,e iθα ;µ α = 0, ad hece whe a ad b are real, the desired covergece follows from the calculatios i Sectio 4.. The desired uiform covergece o compact subsets of C 2 follows from the statemet about ormal families i Corollary 4.6. N
