1 El Camino College Compton Center Success and Retention by Course and Faculty The following report provides the grade distributions, retention rates and success rates for each course offered in the indicated term. A separate breakdown by faculty name is provided. from sections of the same course taught by the same faculty are combined into one listing. Courses with fewer than 5 students are not included in this report. Results from online courses are provided in a separate report. Report Definitions and Notes We use the Chancellor s Office methodology to calculate the success and retention rates. Retention Rate The retention rate is the percentage of students who remain enrolled through the end of a course out of all students enrolled at census date (definition below). In essence, it is the percentage of students who did not drop late or withdraw. Formula: Numerator (top): Number of enrollments with grade of A, B, C, D, F, IP*, P, NP, or IF* Denominator: Number of enrollments with grade of A, B, C, D, F, IP*, P, NP, IF*, or W Success Rate The success rate is the percentage of students who receive an A, B, C, P or IP as a final course grade out of all students enrolled as of the census date. Formula: Numerator (top): Number of enrollments with grade of A, B, C, P or IP* Denominator: Number of enrollments with grade of A, B, C, D, F, IP*, P, NP, IF*, or W Census Date The census date is the day on which the College records students as enrolled in a given term. It typically follows the add deadline, but a specific formula is used to calculate this date based on course criteria such as number of days and weeks a class meets. Most.grades.and.notations.in.this.report.are.easily.identifiable.but.two warrant a.brief explanation...the IP grade includes IA, IB, IC, IP and IPP because they all equal an successful completion. The IF grade includes ID, IF and INP because they all equal an unsuccessful completion. ECC
