Campus of Aa Uiversity, Chromepet, Cheai 6 44, INDIA {gadiyar, padma}@au-kbc.org Abstract I the sixth chapter of his otebooks Ramauja itroduced a method of summig diverget series which assigs to the series the value of the associated Euler-MacLauri costat that arises by applyig the Euler- MacLauri summatio formula to the partial sums of the series. This method is ow called the Ramauja summatio process. I this paper we calculate the Ramauja sum of the expoetial geeratig fuctios P log e ad P H(j) e where H (j) = P m= m j. We fid a surprisig relatio betwee the two sums whe j = from which follows a formula that coects the derivatives of the Riema eta - fuctio at the egative itegers to the Ramauja summatio of the diverget Euler sums P k H, k, where H = H (). Further, we express our results o the Ramauja summatio i terms of the classical summatio process called the Borel sum. Keywords Diverget series, Euler sums, geeratig fuctio, Riema etafuctio, Borel sum, Laplace trasform Mathematics Subject Classficatio (2) M6, 65B5, 4G99
Itroductio Let e x e = = B (x)!. () B (x) is the th Beroulli polyomial ad B () = B is the th Beroulli umber. At the begiig of the sixth chapter of his Notebooks [3], Ramauja writes the Euler - MacLauri formula for the partial sums a() + a(2) + + a(x ) = C + of a ifiite series x a(t)dt + k B k k (a(x)) (2) a() ad assigs the value of the costat C the sum = of the series. For example, oe has x = γ (3) by this process, where R deotes the Ramauja summatio ad γ is the Euler - Mascheroi costat This follows from the formula [2] ( ) = log x + γ + O. (4) x It was poited out by Hardy (Sectio 6, Chapter 3 of [3]) that this defiitio makes the Ramauja sum of a series ambiguous as the sum depeds o a particular parameter that appears as a lower limit of a itegral. I [6], Cadelpergher, Coppo ad Delabaere formulated the Ramauja summatio i a rigorous maer so that the uiqueess of the sum of the series is established. They also proved several properties of the Ramauja summatio ad summed may well kow diverget ad coverget series. Oe of the results they obtaied usig this summatio process was that where H = j= H = 3 2 γ + 2 log(2π), (5) 2 j is the th harmoic umber ad H =. Note that So the atural questio to ask ow is whether k. ζ () = log 2π. (6) 2 k H is related to ζ ( k) for 2
A heuristic argumet suggestig a idetity ivolvig is give i [8]. Also, recall the Euler sum idetities [7] = = = k H ad ζ ( k) = H 2 = 2ζ(3) (7) H 3 = 5 ζ(4) (8) 4 H 4 = 3ζ(5) ζ(2)ζ(3). (9) Sice the fuctioal equatio of the Riema eta - fuctio relates ζ(2k+) to ζ ( 2k), this further covices us of our cojecture. Such a relatio exists, ideed! We state below the orgaiatio of the paper alog with the mai results ad a sketch of the proof of the mai theorem (Theorem ). I Sectio 2 we defie the Ramauja summatio, state its properties ad give a few examples that will be used i this paper. I Sectio 3 we obtai the formula coectig ζ ( k) to R k H. This sectio cosists of the followig results. Let ψ(x) = Γ (x) deote the digamma fuctio. Γ(x) Lemma For < π, we have e log = Lemma 2 For < π e H = Note that the itegral e e + + k= k= ( log e H k ψ(x + )e x dx k+ m= e ( ) Bk+ B m m! ) + k + e +γ( e ) e H k m+ (k m + )!. () e ( )! = ψ(x + )e x dx. () ψ(x + )e x dx appears o the right had side of both the equatios () ad () ad ca be elimiated. This is the key idea of our mai theorem which we state below. 3
Theorem For < π R ( e e log + e e H = γ e ) mod (Q[[]]). (2) Equatig the coefficiets of, we have Corollary If k the ζ ( k) = ( ) k H γ Whe k, this meas that ζ ( k) = ( ) k H γ Equivaletly for ay iteger k we have k H = γ( B k+ k + ) log( 2π)+ ad whe k = k m= ( ) Bk+ (2) k + ( ) Bk+ k + + mod Q. (3) mod Q. (4) m!(k m)! ( )m ζ ( m) mod Q, (5) H = 3 2 γ log( 2π) + 2. (6) The otatios mod (Q[[]]) ad mod Q are used oly for the simplicity of the statemets of the results ad these terms ca be explicitly calculated as ca be see from the proof of the theorem. Further, we will express at the ed of this sectio k H i terms of the aalytic cotiuatio of the ormal sum H ear the egative itegers. s = Next, i Sectio 4, we will show that the Laplace trasforms ad the Borel sums arise aturally whe we cosider the Ramauja summatio of expoetial geeratig fuctios. Thus we iterpret our results o the Ramauja summatio i classical terms as follows. 4
Theorem 2 For o < < π, we have k= ζ ( k) γ Borel + e L k ( x + k m= B m m! ( ) +! + ζ( + ) = ) () (k + )! k H k m+ (k m + )! + k k + H k where L(f) deotes the Laplace trasform of the fuctio f. ( ) Bk+, (7) k + Also we show that a asymptotic formula obtaied by Ramauja for e log() is actually a equality. Sectio 5 cosists of a geeraliatio of Lemma 2. Here we calculate H (j) e where H (j) = m j. m= 2 Ramauja Summatio We refer to [6] for the proofs of the results i this sectio. We give the defiitio of the Ramauja summatio i Sectio 2., state its properties i Sectio 2.2 ad furish a few examples i Sectio Defiitio We will ow defie the Ramauja summatio of a ifiite series. Let f C (R). We have, for N, the Euler-MacLauri formula f() = f(t)dt + N = f(t)] B! + ( )N+ By a traslatio o f we have for every iteger k f(k) = k+ k f(t)dt + N = f(t)] k+ B k! + ( )N+ where b N (t) = B N (t [t]). So, if the itegral the we have N f(t) B N(t) dt. (8) N! k+ k N f(t) b N(t) dt, N! (9) N f(t) b N(t) dt is coverget, N! f(k) = R(k) R(k + ), (2) 5
where R(x) = x f(t)dt N k= B k k f(x) + ( ) N+ The a summatio for k =,, gives The costat C f = R() = N k= x N f(t) b N(t) dt. (2) N! f(k) = R() R(). (22) k= B k k f() + ( ) N+ N f(t) b N(t) dt (23) N! is the Ramauja costat of the series f(). I Chapter 6 of his Notebooks Ramauja says: The costat of a series has some mysterious coectio with the give ifiite series ad it is like the cetre of gravity of a body. Mysterious because we may substitute it for the diverget series. If all the derivatives of f are sufficietly decreasig at ifiity we ca verify, by itegratio by parts, that R() does ot deped of N ad that the fuctio R satisfies the coditio lim R(x) = f(t)dt (24) x If we wat to relax the hypothesis o the fuctio f we ca try to defie the costat C f to be the value at of a solutio R of the differece equatio R(x) R(x + ) = f(x). (25) To obtai a uique value R() we must fid some coditios which gives us a uique solutio of this equatio. We observe that for ay iteger k k+ k f(x)dx = k+ k R(x)dx k+2 k+ If lim x R(x) exists we have by a summatio for k f(x)dx = 2 R(x)dx. (26) R(x)dx lim R(x). (27) x Thus the coditio lim x R(x) = f(x)dx is equivalet to the coditio 2 R(x)dx =. (28) Ufortuately this coditio does ot give the uiqueess of the solutio of the differece equatio as we ca add to a solutio ay periodic fuctio of 6
period. To avoid this we ask that the fuctio R is aalytic ad of the order of icrease less tha 2π. The followig theorem provides us the existece of a uique solutio for R(x). See Sectio 3. of [6]. Theorem 3 Let x a(x) be a aalytic fuctio o P = {x Re(x) > } such that there exist α < 2π ad K > with for all x P. The equatio a(x) Ke α x (29) R(x) R(x + ) = a(x) (3) has oly oe solutio R a aalytic o P = {x Re(x) > } so that there exist β < 2π ad L > with R a (x) Le β x (3) ad with 2 R a (t)dt =. (32) Now we are ready to give the defiitio of the Ramauja summatio of a series. Defiitio Let x a(x) be a aalytic fuctio o P = {x Re(x) > } such that there exist α < π ad K > with a(x) Ke α x (33) for all x P. We call the Ramauja summatio of the series a() the umber a() = R a (). (34) We make the followig remarks. Remark. The coditio α < π is sufficiet to obtai a = b if a() = b() for all N ad thus Remark 2. We have a() = b() for all N a() = b(). (35) R a () R a (N) = <N a(). (36) 7
If lim N R a (N) exists, the the series = a() is coverget ad hece = a() = a() + lim R a(n). (37) N Itegratig the differece equatio (3) from to N ad usig (28) we get So we obtai N+ N N R(x)dx = a(x)dx. (38) a() = a() = a(x)dx. (39) 2.2 Properties We list below the properties of the Ramauja summatio. Property Liearity. λa() + µb() = λ a() + µ b(). (4) Property 2 Traslatio. a( + N) = a() [a() a(n)] + N+ a(t)dt. (4) Note that this property is differet from the axiom (C) Hardy states i Sectio.3, Chapter I of [3]. Property 3 Derivatio. R k a = k R a + k a(), (42) ad k a() = k R a () + k a(). (43) Property 4 Takig f = R a ad k = i (9) ad usig (42) we get N a() = a() B! + ( )N+ = 2 R N a(t) B N(t ) dt. (44) N! 8
Property 5 If (, x) a(, x) is aalytic o D {x Re(x) > } ad a(, x) Ce α x (45) for some α < π ad C >, the R a(, ) is aalytic o D ad for all D a(, ) = a(, ). (46) m I particular if D is a ope set cotaiig ad we have a(, ) = a k (), (47) k m the for D a k (). (48) a(, ) = k 2.3 Examples Now we give a few examples of the Ramauja summatio which would be used i the sequel. Example. If a(x) = x s (s C), we have where Thus R a (x) = ζ(x, s), if s, (49) s = Γ (x) = ψ(x), if s =, (5) Γ ζ(x, s) = = ( + x) s. (5) s = ζ(s), if s, (52) s = γ, if s =. (53) I particular ad = 2 (54) k = B k+, if k =, 2, 3,. (55) k + 9
By derivatio ad i particular log s = ζ (s), if s (56) (s ) 2 log = ζ () = + log( 2π). (57) Example 2. For < π, let a(x) = e x. The ad R a (x) = ex e + e (58) e = e e + e. (59) We observe also that e is aalytic for < π, but the series is coverget for Re() < ad so we have a aalytic cotiuatio of outside the disc < π if we defie e = e = e for Re() < by I the disc < π we have the relatio R e = e e x dx = e + e e e e e + e. (6). (6) 3 Ramauja Summatio of the Expoetial Geeratig Fuctio I this sectio we will prove our mai results. I Sectio 3. we will calculate e. We will prove Lemma i Sectio 3.2, Lemma 2 i Sectio 3.3 ad Theorem ad its corollary i Sectio 3.4.
3. Calculatio of The Ramauja sum the series = e e is defied i the disk < π. For < Re() < π e is coverget. Thus usig (39) we ca write e = = e x e x dx = log( e ) + Ei( ), (62) where the fuctio Ei is defied by [] Ei( ) = We have for < Re() < π u e u du, if arg() < π, Ei( +i)+ei( i) 2, if <. (63) Thus for < Re() < π Ei( ) = γ + log + ( e = log e ( )!. (64) = ) + γ + ( ) =!. (65) By aalytic cotiuatio this result remais true for < π. Thus we have proved Lemma 3 For < π we have ( e = log e ) + γ + ( ) =!. (66) 3.2 Proof of Lemma - Calculatio of Let k be a o-egative iteger ad e log a k (x) = xk (log x H k). (67)
It is easy to prove that [4] m a k (x) = x k m (k m)! (log x H k m), if m k, x, if m = k +. (68) Thus usig the liearity property, Property 4 of the Ramauja summatio ad (5), we get The fuctio k log H k k = = k+ m= k m= f : B m m! B m m! m a k () + ( ) k 2 H k m+ (k m + )! + ( )k+ R /x (t) B k+(t ) dt (k + )! 2 e log (7) is aalytic for < π ad k f() = R k log ad thus So we have e log = k= k log. (7) ψ(t) B k+(t ) dt. (k + )! (69) e log = = k= 2 + k= H k k + k ψ(t) k k m= B m m! ( ) k+ B k+ (t ) dt (k + )! ( ) H k Bk+ + k + k + e e H k m+ (k m + )! k m= B m m! H k m+ (k m + )! ψ(t + )e t dt, (72) where we have used (), (55) ad 2 ψ(t)dt = This proves Lemma. 2
3.3 Proof of Lemma 2 - Calculatio of e H By the liearity ad the traslatio property of the Ramauja summatio, we ca write for < π R e H = e e (+) H R R = e e (+) H + e e (+) + R 2 = e e H + e (ψ(x + ) + γ)e x dx e R where the last step follows from the fact that Now usig the fuctioal equatio we get e (+) +, (73) ψ( + ) + γ = H. (74) ψ(x + ) = ψ(x) + x, (75) e H = e + e e e e 2 e ψ(x)e x dx + e 2 e x x dx γ e e (+) +. (76) Usig the traslatio property of the Ramauja summatio we write e (+) + = e e + 2 e t t dt. (77) Thus e H = e e e γ e e e 2 ψ(x)e x dx. (78) 3
That is, for < π e H = e Lemma 2 ow follows from Lemma 3. e γ e e ψ(x + )e x dx. (79) 3.4 A Relatio Betwee ζ ( k) ad R k H I this sectio we will prove Theorem ad Corollary. Note that the right had side of both () ad () cotai the term ψ(x + )e x dx. Except for this term, all the other terms are kow o the right had side of both the equatios. Surprisigly this ukow term ca be elimiated ad we get a simple relatio betwee e H ad e log. That is, we have for < π, R e log + e I other words, we have for < π ( e e H = γ e ) + k= k+ m= + e log e + e e = B m + k= H k H k m+ m! (k m + )! ( ) e ( ) ( ) Bk+ k +!. (8) R e log + e e e H = γ( e ) mod(q[[]]). (8) This proves Theorem. Corollary follows immediately by equatig the coefficiets of. I particular, whe k =, we have from (8) ad (56) Thus from (57) we have log + H = 3 2 γ 2. (82) H = 3 2 γ log( 2π) + 2 (83) 4
3.5 Iterpretatio of s The fuctio s the relatio H s s H is a etire fuctio ad we have for Re(s) > s H = h(s) + where h is the fuctio defied for Re(s) > by h(s) = x s (ψ(x + ) + γ)dx, (84) s H. This follows from (39) ad (74). But we kow the Taylor expasio of x ψ(x + ) + γ ad by the iterpolatio formula of Ramauja [2], we obtai, if < Re(s) < 2, Thus, for < Re(s) < 2 h(s) = π si(πs) ζ(s) h(s) = /2 s x s (ψ(x + ) + γ)dx = x s (ψ(x + ) + γ)dx + π ζ(s). (85) si(πs) s H. (86) This shows that the fuctio h ca be aalytically exteded for Re(s) <, with poles at the itegers, 3, 5,..., 2q,... with the expasios γ ζ () + R H + O(s), ζ( 2q) s ( 2q) + ζ ( 2q) x2q ψ(x)dx γ 2q + R 2q H + O(s ( 2q)). For s = 2q, q =, 2,..., we have ζ( 2q) = ad so the fuctio h is aalytic at 2q ad R 2q H is just related to h( 2q) by h( 2q) = ζ ( 2q) x 2q ψ(x + )dx γ R 2q + + 2q H. (87) The values of h( 2q) are kow i terms of Beroulli umbers [5]. 5
4 Ramauja Summatio of Expoetial Geeratig Fuctios ad the Borel Sums I this sectio we will express our results o the Ramauja summatio i classical terms. I Sectio 4. we will show that the Laplace trasforms ad the Borel sums appear aturally whe we cosider the Ramauja summatio of expoetial geeratig fuctios. I Sectio 4.2 ad Sectio 4.3 we will iterpret R e ad R H e as Borel sums. I Sectio 4.4 we prove that a asymptotic relatio stated by Ramauja for the sum log e is actually a equality. Fially we prove Theorem 2 i Sectio Ramauja Summatio, Laplace Trasform ad the Borel Sum Let x f(x) be a aalytic fuctio o P = {x Re(x) > } so that for all ε > there exist K > with f(x) Ke ε x for all x P. The Ramauja summatio of the series f()e gives with (48), for < π f()e = k ( ) k = k f(). (88) Thus R f()e is a expoetial geeratig fuctio of the sums R These geeratig fuctios are aturally related to Laplace trasforms, because, if < < π, we have from (39) k f(). f()e = f()e e e x f(x + )dx. (89) Defiitio 2 Let x f(x) be a aalytic fuctio o P = {x Re(x) > } so that for all ε > there exist K > with f(x) Ke ε x (9) for all x P. We defie for > the Laplace trasform of f by L(f(x))() = e x f(x)dx. (9) This trasform is related to the Borel summatio of diverget series of type c. + 6
Defiitio 3 A series c is Borel summable for > if the series + c x! has a radius of covergece R > ad if the fuctio x g(x) = c (92)! = has a aalytic cotiuatio alog R + with e x g(x)dx coverget for >. The we defie Borel c + = e x g(x)dx. (93) Lemma 4 Let x f(x) be a aalytic fuctio o P = {x Re(x) > } so that for all ε > there exist K > with for all x P. The f()e = = f(x) Ke ε x (94) f()e e L(f(x + ))() (95) + Proof From (39), we have for < < π, f()e = = Borel f()e e f()e f(). (96) + e x f(x)dx f()e e L(f(x + ))(). (97) We have the Taylor expasio with the radius of covergece The by defiitio Thus, for < < π, f()e = This proves Lemma 4. f(x + ) = L(f(x + ))() = + f() x!. (98) Borel Borel f()e e f(). (99) + f() +. () 7
4.2 e as a Borel Sum For < < π we have from (39) Thus, from Lemma 4, e = ( e e L = log( e ) e L x + Borel e = log( e ) e ) () ( ) (). () x + ( )! +. (2) Note that this Borel sum is related to the Ei fuctio by the fact that ( ) e L = Ei( ). (3) x H e as a Borel Sum For < < π we have (agai from (39)) H e = H e = log( e ) e γe The relatio ψ(x + 2) = ψ(x + ) + x+ gives H e = log( e ) e γe Usig the Taylor expasio (ψ(x + ) + γ)e x dx e ψ(x + 2)e x dx.(4) e L(ψ(x+)) e L ( ). (5) x + ψ(x + ) = γ + ( ) + ζ( + )x, (6) this gives H e = log( e Borel ) e e ( ) + Borel! + ζ(+) e ( )! + (7) 8
4.4 log e ad Geeratig Fuctio of ζ ( k) For < < π, we ca write log e = log e e L(log(x + ))(). (8) But L(log(x + )) is simply related to the Ei fuctio. We kow from [] that e L(log(x + ))() = Ei( ) We kow from (56) that k= = (γ + log ) + e ( ) k log = ζ ( k) Hece we get k= e log = (γ + log ) k= k= ( ) k (k + )! ( ) k (k + )! k +. (9) k +. () ( ) k ζ ( k). () Thus we see that Theorem 3.2 of Ramauja i Chapter 5 of [4] is ot just a asymptotic expasio but a exact equality whe + for the case m = p =. 4.5 k= ζ ( k) i Terms of Borel Sums I this sectio we will prove Theorem 2. We have see i (72) that for < π the sum R e log ca be writte i terms of the itegral ψ(x + )e x dx. For < < π there is a simple relatio betwee ψ(x + )e x dx ad the Laplace trasform of x ψ(x + ). We have L(ψ(x+))() = e e y ψ(y)dy = e e y ψ(y+)dy e Thus L(ψ(x + ) = e e e y y dy. (2) e y ψ(y + )dy + ( ) e L (). (3) x + 9
For recet developmets o the Laplace trasform of the digamma fuctio, see for example, [] ad []. Now (72) becomes e log = L(ψ(x + ))() ( ) e L () x + + k k m= B m m! H k m+ (k m + )! + k This ca be traslated i terms of Borel sums as follows. H k ( ) Bk+. k + (4) e log = γ Borel + + k ( ) +! + ζ( + ) Borel ( )! e + ( Bk+ k m= B m m! H k m+ (k m + )! + k H k k + ). (5) But we kow from (56) that + e log() = ζ ( k) k= (k + )! k +. (6) k= Thus we obtai k= ζ ( k) γ Borel + ( ) +! + ζ( + ) = ( ) e L () x + + k= k + k (k + )! k + k m= H k B m k + H k m+ m! (k m + )! ( ) Bk+ (7). This proves Theorem 2. Remark 3. fuctios We ca write a very simple relatio betwee these geeratig 2
R e log() + e H e = e e + k k m= e γ B m m! H k m+ (k m + )! + H k( B k+ ). (8) k + k This is aother form of Theorem. 5 Calculatio of H (j) e I this sectio we prove the followig theorem. Let Li j (x) = < x < deote the polylogarithm fuctio. Theorem 4 For < < π, we have = x j for e H (j) = e Li j(e ) e ζ(j) j +e m= + e e + ( )j j (j )! m (j m )! ζ (j m) (j )! j m= m (j m )! (e + ( ) m ) (j )! e L(ψ(x + ))() + ( )j j e L( (j )! x + )(). (9) Proof Usig the fuctioal equatio (75) of ψ we have That is, Thus, j ψ(x + ) j ψ(x) = j x = ( )j (j )! x j. (2) ( ) j (j )! j ψ(x + ) ( )j (j )! j ψ(x) = x j. (2) H (j) = ( )j (j )! j ψ( + ) ( )j (j )! j ψ(). (22) 2
But which gives { j ( ) ψ() = j (j )!ζ(j), if j 2 γ, if j =. H (j) (23) = ( )j (j )! j ψ( + ) + ζ(j). (24) Here we have used the otatio that ζ() = γ. For < < π the series H(j) e is coverget ad hece we ca write H (j) e = = H (j) e H (j) ( ( )j (j )! j ψ(x + ) + ζ(j))e x dx e e ( )j ζ(j) (j )! j ψ(x + )e x dx. (25) But we have ad thus e x j ψ(x + )dx = e e L( j ψ(x + )) e L( j ), (26) x + j ψ(x + )e x dx = L( j ψ(x + )) j ψ(x + )e x dx = ( e e )L( j ψ(x + )) e L( j x + ) = e L( j ψ(x + )) e L( j ). (27) x + Therefore, (25) becomes H (j) e = H (j) e e ( )j ζ(j) (j )! e L( j ψ(x + )) ( ) + ( )j (j )! e L j. (28) x + That is, H (j) e = e Li j(e ) e ( )j ζ(j) (j )! e L( j ψ(x + )) ( ) + ( )j (j )! e L j. (29) x + 22
The Laplace trasforms ca be evaluated for j 2 by itegratig by parts repeatedly ad thus we get j L( j f(x + )) = 2 j f() + j L(f(x + )). (3) =2 Usig this idetity i (29) for the fuctio f = ψ, we get (9). This proves Theorem 4. Remark 4. Relatio Betwee Li j ad the Beroulli Numbers We have [9] ( ) e B log =! ad thus = Li (e ) = log( e ) = log Sice Li 2 (e ) = Li (e ) we have Li 2 (e ) = C + log + where C = Li 2 () = ζ(2). 24 6 Coclusio This paper has two igrediets, the first beig the calculus of the Ramauja summatio developed by Cadelpergher, Coppo ad Delabaere ad the secod the use of geeratig fuctios for diverget series. Usig these two tools, we have obtaied a formula coectig the derivatives of the Riema eta - fuctio at the egative itegers to the Ramauja sum of diverget Euler sums. We have show that the Ramauja sum R log e gives aturally the expoetial geeratig fuctio of ζ ( k) where k =,, 2,..., ad surprisigly this sum is related to the Laplace trasform L(ψ(x + )). We have also obtaied a explicit expressio for the strage fuctio Borel γ + + k= ζ ( k) ( ) +! + ζ( + ). Further we have proved that a asymptotic formula for = log e obtaied by Ramauja is actually a equality. Sice the harmoic umbers H are aturally iterpolated by the fuctio ψ(x + ) + γ, the Ramauja sum H e is also related to the Laplace trasform L(ψ(x + )) ad thus this gives a explicit expressio for the values k H which are related to the aalytic cotiuatio of the fuctio H s ear s = k.
