5 Cross sections? To characterize the probability that a particular nuclear reaction will take place, or the statistical nature of scattering events

6 The total reaction cross section within the optical model calculation, is defined as the total cross section T minus the elastic el cross section for nucleus-nucleus reactions: 0 R (, ˆ ) 2 {1 Exp[ i( b, ) ]} bdb, are the symmetry axis direction and the target nucleus deformation parameters (b, ) is the profile function defined '( b, ˆ ) dz T ( r, ˆ ) p E L r R, d r NN T p A P T and P are the densities of the target and projectile and R is the separation distance between their centers and E L /A p is the incident energy per projectile nucleon in the lab system and nn is the nucleon nucleon cross section.

7 The deformed target density distribution is given by Where R is the half density radius Where 2, 4 and 6 account for quadrupole, hexadecapole and hexacontatetrapole deformation parameters as shown in the upcoming figures a R r o T e r ) ( 1 1 ) ˆ, ( )] ( ) ( ) ( [1 ) ( o o o o o Y Y Y R R
