7 mathematics LISA WATANABE < meet elac people Lisa Watanabe s introduction to higher education took an early detour when she elected to attend a private culinary school after graduating from Mark Keppel High School in Alhambra. She worked as a line cook for three years, but longed to return to college. She chose ELAC because the counselors were friendly and responsive linking her to financial aid and fee waivers so she could afford college. After a very successful two years, Lisa was awarded a Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship that will pay full expenses for her next three years of college. Lisa transferred to the University of California, Berkeley, in fall I started out as an engineering major but fell in love with mathematics, Lisa remembers. I credit my two math professors, David Senesieb and Dr. Larry Powell, for introducing me to the beauty of mathematics. They encouraged me every step of the way, in fact that is what is so unique about ELAC. The teachers, counselors and staff really care about their students. They love their subjects and their students and remember details about our lives and interests. This made me feel special. 11 music FRANCISCO LOPEZ < meet elac people Francisco grew up in a musical family. His parents, as well as his brother and sisters performed in a rock band that featured him as drummer. He knew how to read music and he tinkered with the guitar before coming to ELAC, but had never ventured far from playing rock and roll. Inspired by his professor Dr. Anthony Lupica, an accomplished classical guitarist, he was hooked and switched to classical guitar. Francisco successfully auditioned for ELAC s Applied Music Program and is developing his talent under the tutelage of Ken Nagatani. The music department at ELAC is amazing, Francisco says enthusiastically. I have worked at some boring jobs and now I know that my future has to include music. I want to perform and share music with people, perhaps as a teacher. Dr. Chia Nagatani has encouraged me to build my performance skills and continues to push me to improve my basic musicianship. I ve accomplished a lot, but I still have a long way to go to improve my skills. My goal is to continue studying music through the graduate level. elac SPRING 2012 MUSIC 205 COMMERCIAL HARMONY I Prerequisite: Music lec 3:30pm-6:40pm Th DAWSON, R B S2 121 MUSIC 212 Rpt 1 MUSICIANSHIP II Prerequisite: Music 211.
