1 ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION/PURPOSE PROGRAM: Architectural Technology CODE: A40100 DEGREE: Associate in Applied Science The Architectural Technology curriculum prepares individuals with knowledge and skills that can lead to employment in the field of architecture or one of the associated professions. Students receive instruction in construction document preparation, materials and methods, environmental and structural systems, building codes and specifications, and computer applications as well as complete a design project. Optional courses may be provided to suit specific career needs. Upon completion, graduates have career opportunities within the architectural, engineering, and construction professions as well as positions in industry and government. At participating universities, graduates may continue their education toward a bachelor's degree in related fields. PROGRAM MEASUREMENTS 1. A. Operating Cost: Definition - Operating costs are defined as state funded operating expenditures such as supplies, travel, salaries and fringes, equipment repairs, software, service contracts, etc. It does not include major equipment expenditures, books or grant funds such as the Kate B. Reynolds Grant or other grant sources which may be providing substantial financial support to a program. -$151, B. Equipment Expenditures: - $1, Source: Business Services 2. Continued stress of hands-on laboratory experience with techniques, analytical instruments, and computers. 2. Recording instrument data via computer interface. Program Weaknesses: 1. Enrollment Fall semester, (Still low in fall 99) 2. Same old equipment is wearing out, but hanging in there. (Hope this year.)(new labs and equipment) Recommendations: 1. Increase recruitment efforts. (P.R. video and poster now in hand.) 2. New building funds should alleviate the equipment problems. (The funds took care of problem.) Action Plans: 1. a. Produce another P.R. Flier for Chem Tech program. (Completed April 2000) b. Increase contact with high school chemistry teachers and guidance counselors. (Distribute video and posters. c. Increase recruitment efforts In-House among college transfer students, HRD, and Adult High School students. (Spoke to General Chemistry students. Maintain 3 hall displays.) 2. Purchase Infrared Spectrometer and Gas Chromatograph (If all goes well, other equipment, also.) (Completed) Program Strengths: Program Plans 1. Continued stress of hands-on laboratory experience with techniques, analytical instruments, and computers. 2. Recording instrument data via computer interface. 3. New laboratory facilities and equipment. 4. Excellent employment rate for graduates. Program Weaknesses: 1. Low student enrollment fall Recommendations: 1. Distribute new P.R. materials (5 minute video and poster). (See below) 4. 18

19 CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY Action Plans: 1. Place posters in high schools, UNCW, day care centers, and here at CFCC. (Completed) 2. Place copies of the video in hands of science teachers and counselors in high schools. (Lack of video copying capability postponed completion) Program Strengths: Program Plans 1. Continued stress of "hands-on" laboratory experience with techniques, analytical instruments, and computers. 2. Recording instrument data via computer interface and transmission of data via networked computers. 3. New laboratory facilities and equipment. 4. Excellent employment rate for graduates. Program Weaknesses: 1. Continued low student enrollment fall Recommendations: 1. Distribute new P.R. 5 minute video and redistribute posters 2. Increase recruitment efforts "In-House" among college transfer students, HRD, and Adult High School students. Action Plans: 1. Place copies of the video in hands of science teachers and counselors in high schools and replace poster in high schools, UNCW, day care centers, and employment office. 2. Speak to General Chemistry students. Maintain hall displays. Distribute posters around CFCC campus. Source: Lead Instructor 4. 19

20 COMPUTER ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION/PURPOSE PROGRAM: Computer Engineering Technology CODE: A40160 (Formerly T040) DEGREE: Associate in Applied Science The Computer Engineering Technology curriculum provides the skills required to install, service, and maintain computers, peripherals, networks, and microprocessor and computer controlled equipment. It includes training in both hardware and software, emphasizing operating systems concepts to provide a unified view of computer systems. Course work includes mathematics, physics, electronics, digital circuits and programming, with emphasis on the operation, use, and interfacing of memory and devices to the CPU. Additional topics may include communications, networks, operating systems, programming languages, Internet configuration and design, and industrial applications. Graduates should qualify for employment opportunities in electronics technology, computer service, computer networks, server maintenance, programming, and other areas requiring a knowledge of electronic and computer systems. Graduates may also qualify for certification in electronics, computers, or networks.
